Soooo, VS REALISM is awesomely fun. It feels like this is how versus should have been the whole time.

I like The Passing. I think they hit a technical and polished level of map building the same as they did in L4D’s DLC.

Argh. I can’t start the game! It says the server is too busy!

Steam, I thought we are over this!

I was able to play through the campaign with 2 friends but it crashed (I was hosting) at the very end, after we completed the finale. I quit, an update was downloaded and now I can’t play that campaign at all. Crashes to desktop as soon as it finishes loading.

There’s a thread on the Steam forums about it but none of the suggested fixes – shader detail to medium, delete all custom campaigns – work for me.

Edit: Works now after validating files.

With the latest sale on steam I’m really tempted to pick this up. Do you guys think it’s worth it for somebody who probably wouldn’t be playing any pre-arranged matches with friends? Very few people I know have this game and I tend to have a fairly busy and unpredictable non-gaming life so most of my play time would either be single player or random pub matches online. I am a sucker for zombie games though…

yes. i generally play random mostly. i am not as hardcore as some others (have less than 15 hours online total)… but i can see myself playing alot more if i had an itch to get ‘better’. there are so many gameplay modes, and the new patch has mutation mode or something… sort of like variable options to play?

the pc community is generally better than average in the l4d series because… you actually have to team up especially in the scavenge parts of the game (gasoline maps).

definitely worth it, even if your semi casual.

oh yeah since the weekend played a couple campaign mods… theres a TON out for both l4d’s.

Pub matches are great for coop, IME. Also IME, pub versus is always, always shockingly one-sided, and it takes forever to get a game going.

At any rate, I got it for $40 and felt I’d gotten my money’s worth before I started playing versus.

actually i’d say its a must buy just because there is a community for the game, there will always be players when you feel the need to play. and surivival mode fits if you just have an itch for less than half an hour. its a great great game.

Thanks for the opinions guys. I’ve done some reading up on the game and I think I’ll bite. I’m fairly certain I could get $20 worth of enjoyment out of it and the worst case scenario is I play the single player once, try the multiplayer a few times, find out it’s not my cup of tea, and then quit. Even being the cheap bastard I am, I know I’ve spent more money on worse things in the past.

I was frantically searching for the purchase button on the steam store. I was getting frustrated that I couldn’t figure out how to pay valve for the passing. Apparently it’s free.

what.

I probably would have paid $20 for it.

Goddamnit I’m going to have to download a million maps just to be able to play with you guys, aren’t I.

id say im in the camp where i definitely play alot less than i usually would, but even then theres a ton of campaigns and maps even if you play solo.

just finsihed a game with some qt3ers… experts they all be!

btw the uzi plus the laser and crouched… its like the nail gun in quake… deadly moire accurate than i thought

And… bought!

Now comes the part where I wish 6mb DSL wasn’t the fastest internet option worth a damn in my neighborhood.

We don’t play any customs.

Also, the Passing is fine, but it isn’t amazing. I like the story aspect, though there seems to be a lack of wall writings and dialogue.

I don’t. IYAM, it’s a weak cameo and all this PR crap about this being a hugely important piece of the story is weak sauce. I agree on the lack of wall writings being disappointing (I wasn’t sure if I was in a position to judge the dialogue yet), but maybe there is stuff I missed (I do know of the two rooms before the underground area).

I think the maps seem well designed. I’m just disappointed in terms of the hyped “both survivors” aspect.

The two “item” additions in the campaigh are bad for normal versus play, I Figure. They might fit well in Realism Versus, though, which should be more brutal. How was that by the way?

Out of film. No helicopter. Zombies are too fast. I’m not going to make it.

Yeah, I heard about that one but never saw it. I mostly just looked in the safe rooms.

Also, I thought the death of the survivor could have been more of an emotional experience, but it was kind of just… there. No cutscene or story behind it, and you are sort of busy doing other things to care. I really liked L4D1’s characters, so I wish there was more of a story behind that :)

VS Realism is freaking awesome. I lost way too many hours to it last night.

Definately disappointing. But on the hole the other survivors felt tacked on, though the idea behind the finale is pretty interesting (I had to try it on advanced alone, so I never finished it. But I jumped in with Thorn and a few others to do it later). And I thought we were supposed to get to play as the old survivors?

One thing I like about this campaign versus the L4D mini campaign is that the finale is broken off from the last level.

I’m very interested to try it. Should make for a more brutal experience for the survivors, that’s for sure.
