Maybe it has something to do with people who mostly play public vs matches. Sometimes I think the brain-dead zombies are the guys behind the keyboard…
L4D public vs. is so team-stacked to hell…
You wuss they weren’t all that bad.

I got a glitch in some of my Last Gnome on Earth games. Basically, if the whole team dies and we respawn in the safe room, the gnome will sometimes not be there and the campaign will be impossible to finish.

This week’s update is now up, looks like last gnome on earth won. I think we may be the only people who actually liked follow the liter. Also realism vs is now in for good, I can’t wait for our game tonight.
Follow the liter was terrific. It made for a longer scavenge game I suppose. But it was really fun. Valve should just make it an option.
Also, I think it lame that you basically don’t have to keep babysitting the gnome in the finale. Assuming the world doesn’t end tonight (the sky looks bleak outside, I give it a 40% chance), I am looking forward to some realism vs tonight. What is the new mutation?

So they’re putting in a mutation that they already had? What the hell? I mean, it was fun… once. Watching a sea of zombies change targets was pretty cool but it’s a gimmick that actually makes the game easier and more predictable for the other 3 survivors. There’s some strategy there, and perhaps more people learned that the zombies in this game should be treated as a magnetic flowing wave as opposed to a group of individuals, but I’m not gonna play another week of it.
peacedog: Why is that lame? I’m just wondering.

There was a vote this week to decide which of the past three mutations (besides realism vs) would be repeated. I guess the gnome won.
Well, it’s supposed to be something to change the nature of a campaign. But then it ceases to matter on the last mission, which just seems odd. In some finales, dealing with the gnome wouldn’t be a big deal. The Parish finale might have been brutal if you had to carry the gnome across the bridge (lots of opportunities to lose it in a hole, as I witnessed). But I would have enjoyed the challenge.
That’s the only thing that would have gotten me back into Last Gnome personally; I agree with you it was an interesting novelty but that’s all it was. Though if someone designed some maps where the gnome needed to be strategically used to deal with zombies that might be interesting.

So you don’t have to carry it to the chopper on the finale?
I think what would have been a bit more interesting is if picking up the gnome spawned a horde, and then spawned more hordes every 15-30 seconds while holding it. Then it would have been a more strategic decision of the gnome carrier utilizing his position while the team figured out how to deal with the zombies. As it stands, the team can just throw the gnome whenever they want.
Nope. Me and whoever - I think it was Bunny and maybe Lead and I forget (sorry) - who had our gnome despawn in the Dead CEnter finale. It was dropped on the floor of the elevator before the buttons were pushed. Once they were pushed, it disappeared. We could see it’s outline under the elevator, but not get it. I wondered if it was a glitch, but I saw similar behavior in other finales. In a pubby game in the Parish, the gnome fell off the bridge when I got pounced by the hunter. But we still finished. I think I did one more in the passing, and same thing. We just ignored it on the last level.
If it was a glitch, fine. But I was getting the impression that Valve didn’t intend for us to have to carry it on the last level. Which seems to defeat the purpose to me. I agree that it would have bee nice to alter how spawns worked to add another factor into the gameplay mode. Though IIRC you can’t actually throw the gnome in Last Gnome. It just falls out of your hands if you dropped it.
That sounds like lazy coding to me… they don’t have the finale end zone check for the gnome.

They don’t even have an achievement for this. Blargh to valve.

I am out of state and have been for a while now. I wont be back until mid-June, so I hope you guys can have some rageless games before I come back.

No I’m pretty sure I’m still raging, like, every single night I play.
But we were curious as to where you went.
Yeah, it only drops in front of you instead of being thrown like a regular object.
It certainly sounds odd since you have to carry the gnome to the chopper in Dark Carnival to get that achievement… why would they drop the check for the mutation?
I Take Bunny’s view here: it’s either lazy coding, or possibly lazy testing.
The only thing you have to do is be holding the gnome when you start the finale (at least that was true for pushing the elevator buttons/calling the military). Once you do that, the gnome becomes superfluous from what I have seen.
Awesome realism last night.
You will be missed.
Welp: here is some nice footage from a night of versus- got a lot of people angry :P

Highlights:
-
the field in realism(i missed our magic finding run, sorry)
-
a boomer curveball
-
me setting everyone on fire and dooming us all
how would you watch this?
-unzip the files and put them in your c/progfiles/steam/steamapps/l4d_2/L4d_2 folder
- go in game open console(~) and then type in Play X (ex: “play versus”)
What is it we’re watching? There’s no link there…
There is now. Gotta allow time for ninja edits.
Thorn, you need to play with voice_loopback 1 if you’re going to record demos. It’s not the same without your commentary. :)
