Now personally I thought the old LSL adventures were rather amusing but this video is just plain embarrassing. Stupid dialog, stupid video direction, and what’s up with the gameplay? Are you actually supposed to navigate that little sperm through the arcade game window to have Larry perform the “right” actions?
But but but - YOU ACTUALLY SEE TITTIES! Surely that makes this version all worthwhile, because none of us could just go buy porn, right, guys? Guys? Hello?
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Bouncing the boobies in front of the players just shows a complete misunderstanding of what the LSL games were all about. They were never sexually explicit, and anyway you get better porn than that at every corner of the Internet.
From what I’ve seen, the new Leisure Suit Larry is less Al Lowe and more Man Show. It’s not really my cup of tea (err, stein of beer?), but I can understand them aiming for a younger frat-guy, Girls Gone Wild mentality.
Exactly. I’ve often defended the Larry games over here because most of the critics missed the gag. They’re not comedies about the player trying to get laid, they’re comedies about perpetual loser Larry trying to, and being frustrated at every conceivable point. There’s barely any nudity in them, at least without the easter eggs, any sex takes place off screen or behind a giant CENSORED banner, and the gag is always waiting to see just how the other boot ends up not so much dropping as stamping down hard.
I’m sure if Larry existed, he wouldn’t agree. For one, I don’t think the current game even has nudity. I might be wrong but the last I heard is the nudity was either not done or cut out to avoid the A rating. Now if it does, this would be nothing new for the series. LSL 3 had nude boobies, LSL6 had nude boobies, and LSL7 had a bunch of full frontals. So, apparently a lot of people here who never played the previous LSL games are making assumptions based on another LSL game they haven’t played.
I did play a few older games. Nudity is not what I’m talking about – after all there’s no nudity in the gameplay video. But there’s no wit and no adventure gameplay, either. Instead we see huge breasts jiggling across the screen, almost non-stop.

It doesn’t really matter if there was nudity or not. The old adventures clearly were aimed at mature/adult gamers - well, the average adventure fan and PC owner 10-20 years ago definitely was older than the average gamer today. I’m inclined to say that the latest Larry title is more or less going for the 16-20-year-olds. Who consider sperm races and whatnot funny or edgy in some way.
I would disagree with you about the wit, which is really tough to portray in a 1-minute video. As far as “adventure gameplay” goes, the sooner you realize that adventure games are dead and move on, the easier it will be for you to understand the game design decisions we made on Leisure Suit Larry. Going back to the well with tired, antiquated adventure game concepts would have doomed LSL to failure. Adventure games stopped being made for a reason - people stopped buying them.
I think that the gameplay in LSL is the natural evolution of adventure games.
“The gameplay in LSL is the natural evolution of adventure games”
Maybe the videos are just giving the wrong idea, but they look more like the evolution of Mario Party. I’d personally call the next evolution of adventure games one with more focus on story and actual puzzle solving rather than inventory - borrowing more from Laura Bow than Monkey Island. Unfortunately, nobody seems interested in pursuing that sort of route when you can just have a ton of tedious inventory object puzzles or big levers that open doors.
That said, I’m prepared to give the new LSL a shot. If the individual games are fun, it’ll probably work. If they’re just an excuse to bounce breasts around the screen, well…
Even though wit and adventure gameplay are laudable, I still don’t understand the complaint here. Their replacement seems to be, at least to me, at worst - serviceable, at best - superior.
I don’t really agree that adventure games don’t sell, I can understand the design changes in LSL:MCL. Over all it looks good. For me adventure games were more about interacting with a good story and characters than inventory manamgement. I remember the puns, blue humor, and the lovable loser that is Larry. I don’t foundly remember having to manufacture a grass skirt from unlikely items I collected to sneak into some place. I hope LSL:MCL does really well (especially the pc version) and companies consider doing similar games. I have my copy on order.
C’mon now… they changed the main character, changed the gameplay completely, it was developed by a company which as of this june no longer exists (sierra), the content and gameplay is aimed at 14 year olds with consoles, and most importantly, they didn’t bring in al lowe even though he was more than happy to be on the project.
I think everybody knows this is going to be dogshit, right? There’s no chance of it being good.

The latest preview I’ve read, in OXM, claimed that the writer had seen full frontal nudity in the game, and seen it quite frequently, but supposed that it will be cut to avoid an AO rating. Microsoft has supposedly stated that they will not allow any AO game to pass through their QA process.
For one: Sierra stopped existing 02-22-1999. Don’t confused the washington maker of computer card and casino games as Sierra.
The game play and content is NOT aimed at 14 years old. I don’t know what goes on at your house by 14 year old will not be playing M rated games.
In case you didn’t know, its coming out for the pc.
Al Lowe as in Al “I’m going to sit at home and pining for 8 years” Lowe? I liked most of Als games. Don’t get me wrong. But he isn’t the only person with a sense of humor and who knows how helpful he would of really been? His web page is just a copy of old internet gags.
And lastly, I think this game has a very good chance of being good. I guess if you don’t like humor and boobs are scary then you might not like it.
From what I’ve read about the game, the designers are taking the same humor approach as the current crop of teen movies (“Van Wilder”, “Road Trip”, etc) with gross out moments and shameless titillation. Not quite what old LSL fans are looking for but not a definite flop either. Time will tell.
(hehe I googled ‘titillation’ to make sure I spelled it right and ‘LSL:Magna Cum Laude’ was the 7th result on the list)
