Lenovo e590 laptop - Does RAM have to be upgraded in pairs?

I’m working on my Mom’s laptop and am going to bump her from 8 to 16 Gig of RAM. Right now it has 2x4 Gig sticks. Do I need to install 2x8 Gig pair of sticks? Or can I just put 1 16 Gig chip in there?

One 16GB chip should be fine. 2x8 is a little faster due to dual channel. If it’s an older laptop, check to see if it can handle 16GB per slot before buying anything.
