Hey folks,
My brother has this Lenovo T61 laptop and it has this port on the front, a little to the right of the mousepad (what you use when you don’t have a mouse, whatever it’s called on laptops, I don’t own one). Anyway, despite combing through the documentation (even on the Lenovo site) it remains unclear what kind of port it is. Does anyone here know? I’ve tried googling for the info but my google-fu is weak. It’s weird how silent the documentation is about this. It explicitly points out what all the other ports are, but not this one.
Here’s a pic (not super hi-res) that shows the port I’m talking about: JPEG image
If someone here knows what this thing is, please enlighten us.

Maybe it is. It’s about an inch wide. Is that how big SD cards are? (I’m a neophyte about the latest in very compact storage–just bought my first USB flash drive.) It seems to have a little gray button on the right that I’m guessing pops out when something is inserted, which if so would be an eject button of some sort.
It looks exactly like an SD card slot to me and a quick search reveals that this model did indeed have an optional reader. I just couldn’t locate anything that actually shows where the SD card slot would be located (unless you count these photos, which seems like a different situation, one where you install it in a different location, when you have a chasis that lacks the hole).
I’ve also read that it might be an Express Card reader. What’s the difference?
Well, my brother has an SD slot adapter for a micro SD card, and that seems to go right in, but we’re afraid to push it in too far in case we can’t get it out.
That model does have an optional express card slot as well as an optional SD reader slot. You can pick one or the other and, if you go with express, you can then install an SD card reader into the express slot. The OP picture appears to be showing a regular SD card reader without express card.
Also, and I could be totally wrong on this, but I think the Lenovo T series express card slots are installed on the left hand side as shown here (via).
Yeah his laptop has that slot (or two slots, it looks like, given the two eject buttons) on the left.
Could it be a dock connector of some sort? I’ve never seen one on the front of a laptop but maybe. Or some sort of lock slot so you could attach a lock to keep it closed?
OK, he’s confirmed that it is (at least) an SD card reader. It’s still open to question whether it reads more than that (I think his machine description said something about a 5-in-1 card reader). I wonder what the other formats might be, beyond microSD using an adapter.
I have the same thing. It is indeed an SD card reader. Pity my new camera doesn’t use SD.
My X31 takes CF cards, but my D50/90 use SD cards. I feel your pain.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I have another question in a different thread maybe someone knows the answer to.
