Lian-Li XB-01 Replacement case for 360?

Short and sweet:

I have a Xbox 360 release model. It’s so loud, I can’t stand playing with my 360.

Picked up a used Falcon version of the 360 yesterday. Plugged it in. It’s WORSE. I’m talking leafblower under the TV worse when the fans are idling.

Installing to disk? My fans are so loud that the difference in the disc drive in use or not was essentially unnoticeable.

Yes. That bad.

I could go buy a new Elite and maybe do better - or not.

I could just say screw it. But seeing as I have essentially said “screw it” for over 2 years now, it’s not sometihng I want to continue to say and do. Yes, I have a PS3 already. I like it a lot and, yes, it’s whisper quiet. I want the same noise level from my 360 as there are a lot of games I have for it - and will get for it - that aren’t on the PS3 and that I want to play.

I’m leaning to just keeping the 120 HD off of the used Elite I just bought and returning the rest to order a Lian-Li XB-01 replacement case. Reports are that the idle fan noise utterly vanishes with the 120mm fan in the XB-01. The disc drive noise issues remain when a game is not installed to HD - but vanish after installation to HD as well.

Plan B:

Anyone tried the XB-01 or have an opinion on this cunning plan?

What do you do when it breaks?

Buy another 360.

My release 360 is already past it’s three year extended warranty.

There is no warranty to void. If it breaks - I buy a new one.

Then go for it, and let us know how it works, I say.

I have the same problem with my launch 360 but wow, those cases are $120? Maybe if it was half that. Plus they want you to disassemble the HD too?

$120? Why not just pony up a bit more cash and get a new model arcade?

Because even the new Arcades are still loud. There’s not a 360 ever made that would truly count as a “silent” device to anyone who cares.

(The PS3 would count. The PS3, I’ve gone hours without even noticing it’s on, for better or worse. But not the 360, new model or launch, disc access or no.)

Silent enough for me. It makes about the same amount of noise as one 120mm fan.

My PS3 would also count as “silent”. If I can get a 360 model that was as quiet as my PS3? I’d be a happy man.

No kidding, I’ve had people turned off of buying a 360 as a media player device because of the noise. It’d be like if an Ipod streamed in the sound of the HDD spinning while you played music, it completely destroys or at least damages its ability to function as desired.

Yeah, I was really excited about media streaming on the 360 before it came out, but after I heard it… not so much.

It’s workable for Divx stuff, but useless for music.

The noise when playing music or watching movies on my Elite isn’t that bad. But anything involving the DVDROM or 3D games makes it pretty ridiculously loud. The warranty’s gone on my non-Elite 360 and I’ve considered spending the money on this case. I’m just not sure I want to spend that much to improve on MS’s bad design.

You seem to be very keyed to fan noise, like a super uh … hearer? So, just wondering why you don’t keep the case but replace the stock fans. Low noise fans are one of the areas where case modders have pushed manufacturers to give LOTS more options.

EDIT: I can’t seem to find one that well reviewed, this might not be an option.

EDIT: For what it’s worth, Lian-Li PC cases are top tier awesome, and generally have decent fans as well. I just don’t think replacing the entire shell here is what you need.

Yeah, replace the fans or just put the thing in a frickin’ cabinet.

Yes, in a cabinet where it can go to die. :(

It’s a 360, accept it, it’s gonna die anyway. We pay $200 every 1-2 years to rent a new one.

Or just make sure you buy one with a newer chipset. I lost 2 boxes but after getting a Falcon box, it’s been going strong for over a year now with heavy use.

No. My unit(s) just happen to be freaking loud. There’s no Jamie Sommers bionics going on here.

When I turned on the “new” used 360 a few days ago for the first time? My cat left the room in a hurry.

Usually when I hear a noise like that, it’s a sign that my wife has started to vacuum the furniture with a hand vac.

It’s OBJECTIVELY freakin’ loud, ok?

As for why no resort to aftermarket fans…beecuase the reviews that I have read indicate that the reduction in sound at idle is not significant. ~ 3db or so. While decibel measurment is on a logarithmic scale (such thats 3db isn’t a tiny reduction), the reviews of the Whisper 70s were not favorable enough on the overall noise reduction for me to think that the reduction in noise level would be suitable enough.

If somebody else has had a different experience with after-market replacement fans who can attest to their awesomeness - by all means - let me know.

On the plus side, my release 360 is now over 3 years old. Even under the extended warranty protection, that warranty is over as of today.

Happily to date, never a problem with it - other than the fact it’s so damned loud.

Might be the reason I have never had a problem with it is because it is so damn loud - meaning the cooling fans on my unit have done their job admirably.

Well…maybe so…but my appreciation of my 360’s “fan enthusiasm” is at an end. :)
