I love this thread. It’s reassuring that the most egregious examples in it are obscure twitter trolls, non-liberals, laws from 1917, literal orcs, and the one time AOC said “run a train” without knowing what it means. If that’s the worst of liberalism, why isn’t everyone a liberal?
I consider myself a liberal and a conservative, small l and small c, but that is from a british perspective.
Basically, liberal small l meaning leave people well alone and what they do in private is their own business, and let them wear what they want, say what they want, but not Liberal big L which I udnerstand to mean pushing quotas etc.
So, in this example, say what you like, but if someone doesn’t like it, you may face some consequences. So, you can have your bakery decide not to serve gays, but the social media backlash would be quite harsh I imagine. But I wouldn’t want to enforce that they have to serve gays.
Probably not a good example but you get my drift.
Small c conservative means responsible fiscal management, be on the side of small business, tax fairly but not excessively, encourage wealth creation and communities.
Large C conservative seems to be more about controlling immigration these days.
I am not a political scholar or expert, merely setting out some thoughts on how one can be both liberal and conservative, and contributing I hope to the discussion.
“Say” what you like ?
Your example isnt someone “saying” anything. Its actively discriminating against a minority. Its not someones opinion, or what they think. They are making the choice to exclude them.
So people can decide not to employ Jews, to discriminate against Jews by not selling them goods, by not allowing them to use their doctors or pharmacy, or burn their books, by not allowing Jews to use their schools etc, and you only rely on social media to stop them? What if society agrees Jews should be discriminated against and there isnt a social media backlash because your propaganda has normalised discrimination? Then what? Historical discrimination against Jews, Tutsis, Rohyniga etc should have only be protected by people being angry on socmedia/community outcry and no laws or enforcement should have been put in place? Well, none were in place. Look what happened.

Yeah say what you like but if the only surgeon in town won’t actually operate on you, well Social Media will be there to help you, too bad you’re dead. Say what you like, if no one will sell you a house, we’ll shame them into silence but hey, it won’t matter, you’ve been shipped to a country they prefer you to be in. Say what you like, but you’ve been denied employment but hey it’s the employers loss right, you can use that job you don’t have to buy that house in the neighborhood they won’t allow you to live in trying to get healthcare for providers that won’t actually service you but hey, I hear a lifetime racist will give a real rat’s ass about you criticizing them publicly, oh but wait, what’s that, the privately held newspapers, publishers and social media decided they don’t want to interrupt sports with the uncomfortables… oh well then, say what you like quietly over there or you know… don’t quietly take it and thank God the people before us did more than just sit around and wait for social backlash to solve everything. It’s a good thing they pushed for and/or clarified actual laws.
Things may well be different in the UK, but in the US these things have been legislated because horrible shit kept happening and imposing legal consequences was the only way we’ve found to at least put a lid on it.

I can imagine places where social media backlash would be quite harsh if gays were welcomed.
So, businesses are free to discriminate against minorities? Cuz that’s a non-starter, really.

So can you imagine what the American south would be like if laws hadn’t “required” equal treatment for black Americans? Or how redlining works all over the country?
Yeah because Jews and gays are exactly the same?
And odd how that’s the bit you all decide to attack.
And not my central point, that one can hold both “liberal” and “conservative” viewpoints.
Or is there no rebuttal to that?
As I don’t know much about the USA’s treatment of people I can’t rely comment.
But you knew that.
Although, didn’t you “liberate” the slaves and then oppress them for another 100 years?
And aren’t you still doing that?
Guess those laws aren’t working out too well now…
Yeah Nesrie I’ve read all of this from you before.
It’s fascinating you guys have decided to turn this into some sort of race war/battle, instead of addressing the rest of what I said, because I did wrote more than one line…

This is not a small thing to say, like not by a longshot. I have no idea why you would think this would pass as liberal by any definition. Don’t have to serve gays, minorities, women, non-citizens… the list is so freaking huge when you step into this.
This is not a throwaway comment that would be just passed over because you wrote more.
It was not enough in this country to ask people to stop being assholes and serve the protected populations. There are laws that force people not to discriminate because social pressure was simply not enough. That’s history.
It’s pretty damned objectionable. Are we supposed to ignore it?
Let him say whatever he wants. He may in fact be gay.

I’ve had a formerly liberal left-wing friend turn into a fan of Ben Shapiro and Milo Yiannopolos because the “left wing” didn’t look after single-issue of Assyrian Christians in the middle east being killed/persecuted. Her ethnic background is Armenian.

I know one of those too. He went down the Breitbart hole for it.
Which is funny because clearly Trump and the GOP don’t give a fuck, but apparently name dropping Assyrians once is enough.

It’s sad. This is in Canada too and her family remains staunch left-wing Liberal (party of Canada) supporters while she applauds Trump. It’s so weird.
