If you look at the other examples, AOC, Taylor Swift, Krystal Ball (that’s a verified account), those are verified, real life, people who have a clear political slant.

You can’t just take some random person you don’t know and say, looks left to me, sounds about right and then call it a “left wing take”.

I certainly know the type, and they exist, but I agree they are not a majority. Way back in the before times (I mean before cell phones, not before COVID) I was the president of my universities role playing games association. Which meant we had open-to-anyone-in-the-student-body D&D games on a weekly basis. So we definitely saw some real winners along the lines you described. That soured me on playing tabletop RPGs with randos which is why I haven’t done much in that regard in the last two decades.

Associating certain people with RPGs is sort of like associating certain people with religions though. In a lot of cases it’s more about the people and the culture and the crowd of friends and the location. The fact that they are playing D&D is an irrelevant detail. My current D&D group contains at least two elected officials (both D) and only one person who is even registered to vote R. We are a bastion of liberality in a red state. That doesn’t really mean anything regarding D&D, it’s just a description of my circle of friends.

Ben Shapiro’s social media accounts are… verified. He’s not some literal random unknown. You can at least talk about someone with a history, an actual record. They don’t have to be elected. There are journalists, comedian, actors, politicians… just running around finding something you think sounds liberal like from someone who kind of seems liberal like in some weirdo stereotypical way. Oh my goodness. What could possiblly go wrong with being two steps away from saying all lesbians or transgenders must be liberal… say that out-loud a few times.

It’s because this is really the only thread where left leaning folks and their beliefs are mocked, whereas the rest of the forum is pretty focused on mocking right wing beliefs. And really, that’s fine.

But it’s like… When people posts stuff about random Nazis or MAGA heads, no one is like, “well those guys are just randos… They don’t count.”

There’s some weird idea here that any criticism of anyone on the left is directed at EVERYONE on the left, and such criticism simply cannot be allowed to stand unchallenged.

But that’s not what this thread is. It’s not a condemnation of all left wing thought.

Sure. But verification just means you verified you’re that person. There are plenty of random fucks on Twitter who are verified. There are also a ton who aren’t.

Monte Cook isn’t verified. Most of the press corp… aren’t verified. Popehat, not verified.

And random fucks who are verified: Derek Arabian aka Dunktrain, Lolish a random artist no one but me knows, etc.

It’s more a matter of who is willing to jump through the hoops Twitter requires. A checkmark isn’t anything special other than showing that someone with it who claims to be a famous person is that person.

D&D has evolved so much over the 40-ish years since its invention that it bears little resemblance to the original question. And the political leanings and views of the original creators need to be viewed through the lens of 1970s politics. I just honestly don’t see how that has any bearing on any modern discussion of D&D.
