I think she’s talking about the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Probably, but oy.

Let’s just be done. Thank you for your service, Nancy, but we’re ready to move on.

She was using sacrifice in the Mayan “unwilling blood gift to the gods” sense, not the heroic “Saving Private Ryan” sense.

Except, who wants the job after her? Speaker of the House doesn’t seem like a job that anyone would want. It’s just a giant target on you.

I mean, pretty much every member of the House aspires to be Speaker. Even Ryan wanted to be Speaker; he just didn’t want the job at that particular point in time, or he pretended not to in order to exact concessions from his caucus before accepting.

Plenty of people want the job, including Heath Shuler (who already tried unsuccessfully to unseat Pelosi) and Steny Hoyer (who will probably take over from Pelosi).

The far left is thinking that they’re gonna get someone like AOC as speaker, lol.

Whoever gets it will just be as tarred and feathered as Pelosi.

Yeah, no. Pelosi was the “far left” candidate. The next speaker will be more conservative than her.

If you’re a politician who craves more power, that just goes with the territory. And pretty much all politicians crave more power.

Sounds foolish, but I guess that’s true. I doubt the house has or could have an equivalent of Joe Manchin.

His name was Dan Lipinski, and thank goodness he is gone.

The difference was he represented a significantly more liberal district in the near Chicago suburbs (my district for a time), and not West Virginia.

I meant in terms of political power without needing to have a particular appointment.

The thing is, the far left has been criticizing Pelosi for a while now, and yet all her moves seem to have worked.

If the House were divided exactly 50/50, then they would have an equivalent of Joe Manchin.

Conversely, if the Senate weren’t divided 50/50, then Manchin would be just another Senator.

Her tweets are fine. And staffers can’t edit what literally comes out of her mouth.

That is the nature of a leadership position.

Absolutely… although I think it’s perhaps worth considering that maybe Pelosi knows better than some of those voices criticizing her, since her plans seem to work out.

I think she is very effective. I think her views and direction overlap significantly with what I want, but the alignment isn’t 100%.

So, of course, when she needs to course correct or make a decision, the question is always, is she doing it because that is the best she can do (and if so, could someone do it better (probably not, but who knows)) or is she doing it because this is an instance where her views and mine are not aligned?

Well, generally speaking, the plans of any Speaker tend to work out. The Speaker represents the majority, and in the modern era that means your agenda gets passed.

I don’t say that to diminish Pelosi. I think she does a great job as Speaker. And she highlights how the role of Speaker is different; I think she’d be a terrible candidate for President, but she’s just the right kind of person to be Speaker.
