That’s pretty awesome. Although I would have thought having Kate Dickie in a game was pretty awesome, too. But then I played a little bit of this and realized I was wrong:
Still, Eddie Marsan in a worn leather armchair narrating an Ian Livingstone game? Seems pretty foolproof to me!

deal breaker. that wet paper towel centrist preferred having Boris Johnson as PM to a socialist Labour party in power. can’t stand the man.

Just wanted to pop in here and talk up a little game I’ve been loving, One Step from Eden.
Before I explain what this in, lemme just start with this. Did you, reader, play and love the Mega Man Battle Network Games? Go ahead and click buy. You don’t need to know anything else.
If you haven’t played MMBN, this game is a very odd duck. It is a real time game wherein you battle across a grid of squares against enemies arranged on the grid’s opposing side. You employ powers chosen through a deck building mechanic, and it is your responsibility to make a synergistic, efficient deck as you proceed. There is a wide array of different powers and relics to empower you, so deckbuilding is tons of fun, and seeing your abilities act in real time is very satisfying. There are also a bunch of unlockable characters, and they each have alternate unlockable play modes.
Here’s the kicker, though: This game is hard. Unapologetically hard. I personally find growing in skill over time, which I definitely have done, even in the face of defeat after defeat, to be very rewarding! But don’t buy this if you don’t cotton to games that will throw down and dumpster you till you get gud. If you’re up for a challenge, though, I totally recommend this. Been loving it on my Switch, and I bet it’s great on PC too.
The game seems much more hectic than MMBN. Is that your impression too?
So I spend a couple of hours with this game.
So far I really enjoy it. Lots of interesting decision in the game. For instance if you get a piece of equipment you can decided to equip it to get it’s powers that you can use once or twice a battle. Or get dismantle it for a card or sell it to get batteries (currency).
However batteries are interesting too since it’s not only your currency but it’s how you level up. So there’s a balance that needs to be kept in mind at al times.
Difficulty wise I got to the 3rd level/world in my first run. Contrast this with StS where I finish game in my first run. I thought StS, Earnnorth, Deep Sky Derelict to be too easy so I found this difficulty nice so far. Hopefully it won’t be like Deep Sky where the difficulty drops off a cliff once you know what you’re doing.
The battle plays out like Hearthstone on a small random tactical map. The maps is like Megaman Battlenetwork where you have your side and the opponent have theirs. The biggest map size I saw was 12 spaces for my side.
Also while the art is very nice but the units lacks distinction. They all mesh together but it’s understandable with the style they’re going for.
Overall it’s pretty good so far.
I think perhaps you got lucky with Slay the Spire, but besides that, “beating the game” is basically the tutorial that unlocks the game proper (ascension).

It is significantly faster: average battles are similar to MMBN boss battles in intensity. But it is definitely heavily skill based, as I am without a doubt getting better and better as I play.
I keep thinking about going back to StS, but my own early success broke the game for my by teaching me that relic luck matters more than card choice. It’s very hard to learn good play when there’s such a large luck component determining success, at least at the introductory level. I take it that doesn’t remain true, and that’s good, but how am I supposed to learn to play well enough for ascension when relic luck is obscuring what is and is not a workable strategy?
Probably but I did get all achievements to StS after. I got to A20 with the Defect fairly easy (80-90 hours from starting StS to A20)?.
Referring to Nowhere Prophet, I got it shortly after the suggestion to @Mysterio and it is, by far, my runaway 2020 game of the year hit.
I failed part way through my first two runs and completed an end-game scenario with my third, still using the Firebrand leader and initial convoy available from the beginning. Those were all on the first / easy difficulty and were often very challenging.
From what I see with the various different leaders and convoys there is a heck of a lot to experiment with. I have rarely observed an AI enemy weakness on the easy difficulty and when I bump up to the ‘Burden’ level, the middle one, I expect I will get squashed quickly.
Different to you though, I am finding that some, not all, units are very distinct. I did not find so in my first game. There were so many and all so unfamiliar I barely paid attention. Now into my fourth run I look out for very specific units that can unlock certain event options or that I can build tactics around. For the latter for example, anything with “Robust” is going to get lots of love.
Yeah it might be me re:units lol. I was playing near midnight should my opinion might change. Mind you I was talking about artwork not the units in play themselves which are extremely diverse.
I am still enjoying this. In principle I shouldn’t, I hate the art style and I hate the limited number of options tuning on card draw, and yet… its good I like the mini quests you can pick, I like unlocking new characters. Anyways good stuff :)
It’s pretty good, yet it hasn’t really hooked me. I’ve finished a run or two on Pirate Bay and don’t really feel compelled to play more.
I know what you mean. I lost interest for a few days* but then came back to it for a few nights. I suspect I may drop off again soon then maybe come back. That kind of “sure I may play that for a night then drop it again” game may stick around in my roster I think.
*or was it centuries? isolation is taking is toll on my time tracking
It does stream Beautifully over steam link to iPad, which is a plus. Been doing that with Slay the Spire too, but deselecting cards in StS can be fiddly. Been thinking of picking up Trials of Fire for that purpose while on sale
Wow, that sounds like a cool setup!
It’s easy to do these days, and works well with anything that has controller support (since iOS natively supports Xbox/PS4 controllers) or is largely left-click driven. Personally, I find two-finger right-clicks to be too difficult to do consistently.
I finally finished the first Pirate Outlaws quest I selected - the one to defeat all three bosses in Pirate Bay three times each.
. . . but then I started playing Nowhere Prophet, and that demands my attention now. I do intend to return to Pirate Outlaws periodically. It has the quality of a game that is super simple and quick to play, pick up and leave and return to. That itself is something I value.
I should really try Nowhere Prophet again. Haven’t played in over a year.
Saw this on IndieGamesPlus:
It’s also on iOS for $3. I’ve grabbed that and will let folks know what I think.
