So I played the demo of Pirate Quartermaster and it’s fascinating. You’re not the captain, you’re like the managerial head of the ship. You manage the crew, their arms, their jobs, their supplies and so on. Then things happen, like the captain gets sad, or they see a ship, and you gotta fight it using a TYPING game (you type fire, get down, grapeshot, etc when the captain gives orders) and the boarding is a sort of real-time combat thing? It’s wacky and insane and I kinda love it so I asked for a key to stream it.

So like… a quartermaster ?

This video is good, not just a random post. Well, it’s a little random, but I’ve watched it before and it’s a solid video.

…yes…

I bought it in EA a couple of years ago, barely touched it, and hadn’t even realized it hit 1.0. I’ll have to check it out now that it’s “done”.

No games for me till after Nov 3, but soon after I’ll give this a whirl.

I am impressed by the humility and self-confidence of a developer who takes this approach to a critique that the game lacks documentation.

I avoid responding to reviews, as I think they serve the consumer best by standing on their own, but I hope you forgive me for making two quick comments:

  1. The issue you encountered with the Battle button was due to armies not being able to attack cities if the army has already moved that turn. However, the button does not say that, and it should. I will correct that problem in a patch later today.

  2. This leads me to the second comment: It is not you who is not smart enough to play the game, it is I who has not been smart enough when it comes to making sure the player is properly taught how to accomplish the fundamentals.

I’m working hard to add a new tutorial mini-scenario that will serve as a better introduction to the game than the current tutorial. If you decide to check back on the game in the future, I hope that tutorial will make the game more playable for you. Either way, I thank you for trying out the game and you have my apologies for not delivering a game that lived up to your expectations.

As mentioned I generally avoid responding to reviews, but cavemen were smarter than modern people - and in this case a caveman would probably smack me over the head and tell me that I should’ve done better on the tutorial/usability aspects. I underestimated the shortcomings of the game in that particular area, and that’s stupidity on my part - not yours in any way.

If you miss the old days of Minecraft alpha/beta, when it was a challenging survival game, then check out Vintage Story. I’m really enjoying it as it reminds me of my first time playing Minecraft; exploring, discovering, evolving and creating my own emergent story. Also, very active/mature Discord community.

From the webpage

Blockquote Vintage Story is an uncompromising wilderness survival sandbox game inspired by lovecraftian horror themes. Find yourself in a ruined world reclaimed by nature and permeated by unnerving temporal disturbances. Relive the advent of human civilization, or take your own path.

Not aimed at you, @GuildBoss, but commenting on the marketing blurb:

How is that supposed to be Lovecraftian? There’s not a single thing in that trailer that invokes Lovecraft in any way, shape, or form. Some game developers seem think Lovecraftian is just a synonym for “horror”. And even then, I don’t see how Vintage Story is even remotely horror. Because it’s got monsters in it?

-Tom

Maybe its the racism.

Don’t quote me on this because I’ve been playing for a short time but there is some sort of “sanity” element to the game where you apparently can lose your mind if you are exposed to darkness and other…bad stuff. There’s also ruins with mysterious wall murals… uh…again, I don’t know the whole story yet. The game is also still in development so maybe the Lovecraftian parts are not complete. shrugs

But yeah, I don’t even care about that. I just wanted an open world survival sandbox and got it. I haven’t seen anything more horrifying than packs of wolves yet

Maybe you’re right but something about the end of that trailer makes me think they’re being coy about it…

And now I want to play Eldritch.

Its EA and I think Ill wait at the very least, until it gets on steam. It does look interesting though. From the trailer though, I am not sure what it offers over modded minecraft.

The developer said Steam rejected it because it’s too much like Minecraft. It’s heavily inspired by Terrafirmacraft mod but the nice thing about VS over modded Minecraft is that it’s all in one package and not developed in Java. In my experience, modpacks made of dozens or even hundreds of mods tend to run like garbage and suffer from various weird conflicts and inconsistencies. Every modpack I’ve played ends up broken after a while.

Really? I have great success with mod packs in minecraft. Of course I mostly stay on the 1.7.10 infinity mod pack. Also, why would steam reject a game because it is too much like minecraft? Its not like minecraft is a poor seller or anything.

I didn’t realize Steam was still curating games at all.

Paging Mr. @Razgon, impressions?

Oh its solitaire, and it looks and plays gorgeously. I am unsure about the special effect some of thr cards have, and what the number if turns spent solving a solitaire has, but I had a lot of fun. And, like Thomas was alone, the game oozes personality and style. But is IS a solitaire game, with some minor twists 🙂

Sounds good to me. Thanks!

I bought Solitaire Conspiracy. Trying to get my head wrapped around the various powers. I gone through some early hands where I did not need to use a power at all to beat it but it is early stages so understandable.

I have grabbed some cards and had the powers go off and didn’t realize that would happen. The powers are a bit Huh? Not always sure of why/when to use one or the other yet.
