I’ve never played any of the SimCity games. I’m pretty sure I’d like them–just have never gotten around to it. Which would you recommend to someone getting into the series for the first time? I’m looking for the best gameplay experience overall–the price difference isn’t a concern.
You can’t beat the first one.

4 is a really cool game, better than the earlier ones IMO.
If you really mean genre, then I would recommend one of the Impressions games (especially Pharoah, maybe Zeus). If you meant an actual Simcity game…haven’t played any since the first.
Similarly, if he really means genre, then Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile would be a great choice. I had a lot of fun with it around Christmas time, and intend to return to it soon.
Simcity 4 Deluxe, which has the Rush Hour expansion, seems to be the way to go, according to a friend who is heavy into city builders. It’s very cheap now, and in his opinion a major improvement over 3000.
I’ll see if I can persuade him to be more forthcoming in his comparison.

I thought SimCity 3 was a better game, but SimCity 4 is still good and looks a lot better. I’d go with 4, though either would be a winner.
Go to all the local Gamestops and see if you can find this.
I know Gamestops were carrying them recently (that’s where I found mine). You get SimCity 3k plus SMAC with Alien Crossfire. Plus some other coasters.
Oh, and it’s only $19.99 plus tax there.
If you have a powerfull computer go with 4 plus expansion. The game is an absolute beast when it comes to system specs, when the game first came out I ran it on my Athlon XP 1800/768mb/Geforce 4 Ti4400 system and it was unplayably slow.
At the time that was a pretty high end system too. On my current high end system it runs ok but in built up cities it can get a little slow.
If your computer is not high end get 3000 otherwise 4 is the best.
Zeus is the best city building game ever.
Of course, I am a classical history nerd, so I might be just a little bit biased.

Sim City 4 plus expansion is probably the one that most people would enjoy the most. Myself, I’m a Sim City 2000 fan.
