The fact that the original Dharmas were wiped out and the hostiles took their place (essentially) is interesting; Dharma is more than willing to conduct more drops and supply the island with personnel despite the fact that they probably know the original team was wiped out–how exactly they’d know I’m not sure. Still a lot to be answered.

One possible explanation is they look at themselves and say “We’re not dead yet!” They left that Swan “experiment” running and presumably know that should the numbers stop being pressed, it’d be bad for pretty much everyone. I don’t know how to explain other inconsistencies - why not try to find some other way to communicate with the island, for instance, or how they locate it with enough accuracy to make food drops in the first place, or why they wouldn’t think it would have been turned off by Kelvins’s magic key - but I’m just throwing it out there.

I think the island is a nexus of the Multiverse. In one timeline, the passengers die. In another, they crash on the island. One timeline, relatives/friends are deceased. Another, they’re alive and find their way to the island.
Somehow Desmond has tapped into this, and it’s why he has memories of different timelines.
I think somehow other people phase in and out…the voices, seeing dead people, jacob…

Ben killed his own father.

Ben wanted Locke to kill his own father, and when he did (indirectly, thanks to the suggestion from Richard) he was accepted into the Others (aka the original hostiles).

Is patricide some sort of rite of passage to these people? If so then Kate is also qualified to join their gang.

Why did Alex give Locke the gun, knowing he was going to visit Jacob? How is a gun going to hurt an insubstantial force? And is that the gun that Ben ended up using on Locke? Was that why Alex gave him the gun, for Ben to use at a later time to kill Locke?

EDIT: And hey, this was post 2000 for me. I wish I hadn’t wasted it on this Lost thread…

Hang on, let’s back up. Richard (Bat Manuel) is an original hostile, I don’t think we have a yea or nay on anyone else. There was:

Original Dharma staff. Includes: Ben Excludes: All others killed by hostiles
Original natives of the island. Includes: Four-toed builders, possibly Richard
Hostiles that wiped out Dharma: Includes: Richard
Current Others: Everyone but Ben and Richard were imported, unless there are other throwbacks that haven’t been shown

I’m still going with genetics, that’s why Dharma has been tracking these people. They are all related to the four-toed race, with Locke and Rose being the ones who are phenotypically showing to be affected by the island. Walt also, but he was so wired in that he started gaining precog, whisper-distance, and what the hell ever else. That’s why Ben let Walt leave the island, he was too powerful and too close to Jacob.

edit: What the hell is a four-two builder?

Desmond came to the island years before flight 815. No one in the outside world has any reason to connect their fates.

Where does Patchy fit in? And Rousseau? Were they imported post-purge? I’ve totally lost track.

Patchy (Mikhail), now that I think about it, is probably another hostile, although the patch would suggest he isn’t that great at healing. But he did survive a pretty deadly looking trip through the sonic fence, despite his saying they were set to stun. Rousseau was one of the original Hatchies from a different hatch, wasn’t she? I’m a little lost now too.

Wah, I killed all the Dharma’s and daddy cause he used to get drunk and blame me for mommy’s death.
Sounds like a snot nosed punk not some great “leader”…of course Locke figured that out.
And how come Ben had such a hold on these people if he wasn’t an original?
How did a bunch of freaks on an island get all the financial backing for this place…Dharma had all that…unless someone else is funding the freaks…and last night definitely proved these guys are making this stuff up on the fly…throwing Bens past together so hastily…hmmm

I thought she said that she was part of a marooned scientific expedition. That could have meant Dharma but that was never explicitly stated. She also discussed an “illness” that caused the people in her team to start killing each other, which doesn’t jive with what we now know of Dharma’s demise.

Her baby girl was also taken from her by Ben/The Others so that would probably have been post-Dharma massacre.

Podunk,

Makes sense, I couldn’t recall if she was a mind-fuck quarantine like Desmond, or something else.

We think her daughter is Alex, right? Ben’s daughter? So does that mean there’s a connection between Ben and Rousseau? Or is Ben just lying to Alex about being her father? (Which seems more than plausible.)

My head, it hurts.

How’s this for whacky: Rousseau is Ben’s little childhood friend. Kids hair color changes (I believe Young Ben had darker hair than Old Ben).

It was never explained what happened to their relationship over time.

The gotcha is that she wouldn’t have survived the childbirth, but there’s no guarantee she actually had the kid on the Island.

My point was what four-toed natives?? I don’t remember learning anything about them. When were they refered to???

Crossed my mind during the show…

I think we see the remains of a statue with only 4 toes in the Season 2 finale, when Sayid and crew are trying to thwart the Jack and co. abduction, but it might’ve been early in Season 3. My memory is pretty fuzzy, I just recall a giant foot with 4 toes.

You have it, a broken statue, only the foot remaining, but with four toes.

Yeah, I hear you. I remember Rousseau telling the Losties that the Others steal children, and that her infant daughter was taken by them as well. Remember that whole thing with the black smoke and Rousseau swiping Claire’s baby because she thought she could exchange him for her daughter or something?

So I’m thinking that the connection between Ben and Rousseau is simply that the Others stole the infant Alex from her mother and Ben raised her as his own. There certainly could be more to it than that, though.

Danielle claims to have been shipwrecked with a small number of scientists on the island. She was pregnant at the time, much like Claire’s circumstances. She said that her party turned on each other, and that her own husband killed some of the other members of thier group before she herself was forced to kill him, at least that was her original story. When she gave birth, the Others came and took the baby from her. She’s hated them and tried to kill them ever since. Alex is defintely her daughter, but I don’t believe her to be Ben’s biological daughter. I think Ben “adopted” her after they stole her from Danielle.

Mikhail was recruited by Richard just like Juliet, only earlier. His background story told of fighting in the Afghan wars as a Russian soldier, and of how the government fell apart post Cold-War. So he came to the island to man the communications array and get away from his old life. He lied at first and said Dharma recruited him, but it was obviously the Others. It looks like the majority of the Others are either recruits or people they’ve snatched (like Cindy and the kids) who are now drinking the magic kool aid so to speak. Richard is the only “original hostile” we have proof of at this point, though I’d wager Ethan was one too based on the way he acted.
