According to Entertainment Weekly we’ll be getting flashbacks for new characters next week.
It’s about the amount of time you spend in one time period versus the other, having one time period where the continuity is set, and one of how you structure the show.
With the flash-forwards, they can be from any time period. If you move the show into the future, the future is the linear portion of the show, and the flashbacks become nonlinear, or can be either or.
Not saying this is necessarily a good idea, but it’s a possibility.
I only watched about 15 minutes of the episode, but caught this part. I agree with you that it was a great scene, and a real change for Jack.
I’m not following the show anymore, because I’m not as optimistic as you folks that there will be a long-term change in quality; the shark-jumping has been too frequent. But that was a great scene!
Lostpedia’s article for last night’s show already has a lot of questions answered. For example, the eye in the window is not Locke.

And just think, after the show is over they can make a show called “The Lost Chronicles”…kinda like a soap opera with whole episodes devoted to the the flashbacks etc.
And nobody steal my idea.

I just don’t see anything that much better on TV for the surprises and unpredictability that LOST has. Once it falls below the bar of things I will watch, I might as well throw my TV out the window.
Someone refresh me…what ever happened to Locke’s dad? Nevermind…I remember…Sawyer. Need more Sawyer. Between his accent, brooding demeanor and looks, I am thinking of putting a shirtless poster of him in my locker at school.

EDIT: Good enough
Sawyer’s last scene with Locke’s dad is perhaps one of the most incredible scenes in the history of television. The guy who plays Sawyer earns those fucking paychecks.

If you watch him outside of the show in an interview, say, you really see how different a person he is - it’s so weird to see him all smiley and friendly.
I agree that the eye in the window wasn’t Locke. The eye was green or hazel, and Locke has blue eyes.
Any ideas about the significance of the creepy dog painting in Jacob’s house?
Re. 2/7/08 episode:
The wreckage of the plane that the mini-subs saw on the sea seems fake. Didn’t a lot more of the wreckage, including the cockpit, end up on the island?

Is it correct to assume that the new parashooter is having a flashforward?
I so predict ghostbusters in 5 4 3 2 1
Oh so they are paranormal investigators? Daniel (Parashooter #1) is all weird over the light. Boat out there to study the effects of the island?

Nevermind. Flashbacks again.
Okay, it looks like there was a concerted effort to convince the world that everyone on Flight 815 died, but a few people didn’t believe it and are now on the island looking for survivors.
And yeah, I LOL’d at the Col. Kurtz thing.
Holy shit, FINALLY someone asks.

Yeah, and it seems like they are some how associated with the original Dharma group that Ben helped wipe out.
Anyway, another tense episode. This show can ratched up the tension like nobody’s business.

Ben made a reference to an alternate past/future when tied to the tree…
the people that parachuted on the island know this also…
I wonder if they have any way to make White Russians on that island.
This is the best show on television, period. Fucking righteously awesome episode.
