I thought the story Jack told was that only 8 people survived the initial plane crash, that Kate was the one who helped everyone, and that despite their combined best efforts, 2 of the 8 later died. This left the Oceanic 6 to be found and rescued.

Yes, Slainte Mhath is correct. My memory was off. Now I remember watching the courtroom scene with Jack and understanding that he was describing their numbers after the original crash, not after their rescue.

I think this fake story also implies that anything they tell anyone who was not on the island is probably suspect.

Right, they lie about anything other than the Oceanic 6 and the two that died or anything that comes out of it other than just the agreed-to story; Hurley lied about even meeting Ana Lucia, that the US Marshall died in the crash rather than on the beach, etc.

Aaron does. You can’t explain away a baby (in under 9 months) without a pregnant woman surviving the crash. They have to have told people that Claire survived the crash but was killed later. I suppose it’s possible they claim Charlie survied and was later killed as well, as at least one person from off the island (Penny) saw him briefly alive and well post-crash. The story they tell seems to make a point of noting that the two deaths occured post-crash but pre-rescue.

Which leaves me wondering where the hell Michael and Walt fit in. They obviously are NOT part of the Oceanic Six now that we know Sayid, Kate, Jack, Hurley and Aaron all returned, as that would make 7 people. Makes me wonder if Michael and Walt will suddenly show up and shatter the entire web of lies that Jack/Kate/Sayid have constructed.

But any way you look at it, they are going to have to have make all of this rescue stuff fit together somehow because right now there are many open questions/problems, chief among them being jabroni’s point that it was previously reported that the passengers were all confirmed dead.
