I prefer UnLocke.

Claire was also seen off-island. Although I do think you’re right in that the apparitions of various people have to have been controlled by either Esau or Jacob. Maybe Esau controls them on-island, and Jacob off.

Just found this on the Wiki for Esau:

In the Book of Jubilees (which is neither part of the Jewish nor most Christian canons), Esau’s father, Isaac, compels Esau to swear not to attack or kill Jacob after Isaac has died. However, after the death of Isaac, the sons of Esau convince their father to lead them, and hired mercenaries, against Jacob in order to kill Jacob and his family and seize their wealth, (especially the portion of Isaac’s wealth that Isaac had left to Jacob upon his death). In the ensuing battle, Jacob kills Esau with an arrow. The sons of Jacob then defeat the rest of the attackers despite overwhelming odds.

Whoa.

She was? I’ve forgotten more about Lost than I remember. When was she seen? Was it by Hurley or someone else?

I have a theory that Hurley is “touched” and sees the actual dead instead of the impostors. He might be some sort of anti-Esau key.

Also - what’s in the damn guitar case?

Kate saw her in Aaron’s bedroom, and she warned Kate “do not dare bring him back”, which seems to be a reference to Locke.

That was about Aaron, I think.

That was a dream.

That all depends on who you think was controlling Claire at the time. If it’s Jacob, “don’t bring back Locke” makes sense.*

  • Maybe.

Yeah, that was a dream and I’m fairly positive it’s referring to Aaron.

Ah, right, it was a dream, not a visitation a la Christian in the hospital. Carry on.

Charlie’s guitar?

Of course, but I’m suggesting that he’s also Locke. In the same way that whatever Christian was/is - and it is likely the same entity that is “possessing” Locke - was also still Christian. “Say hello to my son for me!”

So think Locke with additions.

GestaltLocke.

Esau is a completely speculative name that no one is going to figure out who is being referred to in this thread unless they see the exact message explaining the reference - UnLocke identifies the character a lot better, so I’m with you. UnLocke it is, though the whole Esau thing is interesting.

So, Locke, like Generalissimo Franco, is still dead, but UnLocke seems to have full access to Locke’s knowledge, and acts like and seems to be motivated much the same as him. Is he some kind of reincarnation of Locke, some kind of fusion of Locke and Anti-Jacob, or just plain Anti-Jacob in Doppleganger-Locke format? It would seem to be one of those three options. The Loophole comment indicates at least some part is Anti-Jacob, and “taking care of the rest of the passengers” that just flew in seems to indicate murdering them, and that doesn’t seem to be particularly Locke-like. Either one of them, though, might make the comment about that being the best mango they ever tasted.

But both Locke and Ben seem to have found a loophole for themselves in being able to return to the island, though that would seem to be more a case of Ben just being plain wrong. He is like the Wizard of Oz in that he continues to pretend to more knowledge and wisdom then he actually has.

Anyway, I had two other observations. One is that it was nice that they didn’t leave us completeley dangling on the fate of Rose and Bernard after the beach attack. It looks like they have achieved closure on that front - maybe they’ll appear in the final season, maybe they won’t, but the two seem to have accepted that whatever life they have left will be on the island and that is sufficient for them. However, their coments about continuous strife connect back to the converstation between Jacob and Anti-Jacob at the start of the episode.

And that leads back to those two comments that this particular scenario of people coming onto the island and things ending in mayhem and violence has been played out again and again. Jacob seems to think of all the past episodes as a prelude to the finale, while Anti-Jacob seems to think it is always doomed to repetition. I’m curious as to what the tapestry Jacob is weaving says at the top (looked like greek to me).

Just found it on the net, no authority to it:

ΘΕΟΙ ΤΟΣΑ ΔΟΙΕΝ, ΟΣΑ ΦΡΕΣΙ ΣΗΣΙ ΜΕΝΟΙΝΑΣ
May gods give you what you want

ΘΕΟΙ ΟΛΒΙΑ ΔΟΙΕΝ
Gods give happiness

As to the statue:

It appears as this is of the egyptian god, Sobek. With the body of a man and the head of a crocodile. This god is often depicted holding the ankh symbol in his hand. As for who he is, he started off being the god of the Nile and of fertility. There is mention of him being a force of good by using indirect control through other gods rather than a direct hand. He was a cohort of Horus who was enemies with Set (god of hostility and chaos)

He was also considered an avatar of Amun who later joined with Ra to become Amun-Ra also known as Sobek-Ra.

Questions:
Is the spirit of the island really Sobek?
Is Jacob Horus or Sobek and anti-jacob Set?
Does the character Horace have any connection to the god Horus?
Jacob living beneath the ruined statue of Sobek suggests a connection. What is it?

They’ve thrown Latin, Greek, and Egyptian at us in that episode. Jacob is eclectic if not anything else.

I doubt it. The fact that Jacob gave it to him and (more importantly) the fact that the show creators made a point of mentioning it and its mysterious contents in the special episode prior leads me to believe there’s more significance to the guitar case than just a normal guitar.

Normal guitar?! You’re talking about the bass guitar of Drive Shaft!

YOU ALL EVERYBODY

(Remember when every episode was awesome?)

Hmm, my gut feeling about this; Jacob is looking for an out, a permanent one and wants to assure UnLocke’s mutual destruction. Jacob has a longer view than UnLocke and knew of UnLocke’s manipulations which he factored into his own manipulations. Jacob’s intended result is Ben killing Jacob (which he foresaw as UnLocke’s plan) followed up with Hurley killing UnLocke with whatever is in the guitar case.

That’s right Hurley’s going to become El Mariachi and go all “Guns a Blazin” on UnLocke, Ben and possibly others!
