So (weird energy pocket + nuke detonation) changes the contents of the hole (Juliet + chains & other metal stuff) into something new, which has a will because of Juliet? Interesting idea, and not the weirdest thing to happen on that island, but if the smoke monster was some form of Juliet, wouldn’t Kate have been eaten the day of the crash? (and I’m not saying that because I dislike Kate, I’m saying that because Juliet dislikes Kate and thinks Kate was destined to steal her man)
We did see the smoke monster in the past - Rousseau’s companions were decimated and (presumably) corrupted by it. The temple inscriptions that depict it would also tend to argue that it has been there for a very long time.
I have a feeling it needed to be done by knife. I mean, there were a ton of guns and Loche had one… but he handed Ben a knife.
Heh. That was for Ecko’s departure.
Slightly off topic, but the actor who plays jacob was on the season finale of CSI. I was pretty surprised to see him.
That was after the Incident though because Ben was much older when he stole baby Alex than he was during the Incident time and that must have been about 1 year after Rousseau’s party landed on the island.
I do agree that the smoke monster must be much older though. The sonic fence was around pre-Incident time and while that was partly to keep out the hostiles and other stuff, they’ve implied in the past that the unique nature of the fence was needed to keep the smoke monster out. Add that to the temple markings you already mentioned, the ancient-looking tunnel communication system between Ben’s basement and the monster’s lair, etc and IMO it would be pretty silly to now suggest the smoke monster is Juliet. I think the smoke monster is either the anti-Jacob or is somehow going to be his minion and it probably has something to do with how he is able to take the form of dead people (Locke, probably Christian, maybe Alex (notice how ‘Locke’ was conviently away looking for rope or whatever when that Alex thing came to Ben, etc).
Well, you know, and the whole death in the family thing. There WAS that. It’s best to pretend Eko doesn’t exist at all, because he was set up to be incredibly awesome and that all got pulled out from under the series by real-world circumstances.
I was actually totally pitching those as abstract questions for next season, but it’s cool that some have answers, though I didn’t think that Jack’s eyes were that color of green. For some reason I’m under the impression they’re brown. Maybe it’s because the only times I’ve seen them at all were when the show forced me to look at them. Yeah. Because he’s totally not dreamy.
Well, not Jensen Ackles dreamy, anyway.
Is anybody else finding it incredibly difficult to think of Jacob as any kind of hero for the show because of his history? I mean, they did as good a job as they could with him, but still, very challenging. I don’t know what he did on CSI because I refuse to watch a show that there are three of that is in any way related to Jerry Bruckheimer on general principles, but he’s been a villain on Burn Notice and a villain on Dexter already.
Maybe he’s not a hero and Lapidus was right with the “anyone who goes through the trouble to tell you they are the good guys, usually aren’t” bit
I can buy that. Lapidus is about the only person on the island who thinks logically.
The thought occurred to me that the male and female skeletons found intertwined are most likely Rose and Bernard.
I think that Set (Egyptian god of darkness and chaos) is a brother of Sobek:
I’m guessing that the dude in the black shirt is named Seth.

Jacob wasn’t much of a good guy in the way he manipulated Kate and Sawyer as children. The way I saw those scenes, he gave both of them a little nudge toward being “bad people” at just the right time in their lives. Sawyer finished his letter and didn’t let go of his hatred. Kate did steal again, because she never faced punishment.
He pretty much murdered Nadia, too.
Total aside: was anybody else surprised to see Kate’s Plane make another appearance, given the amount of bitching those two guys do on their podcast about the thing? I think I’ll start sending them questions about it just to honk them off.
As I was driving home I also remembered that Set had a sibling rivalry thing going with his Brother Osiris (father of Horus). He tricked him into getting in a box which he then cut into 12 pieces, scattering them around the world.
I know this only because I wrote a mildly amusing short story about it a long time ago:

Osiris was the god of Light and Father of Horus so he would make more sense than Sobek, though the stuff about Sobek using indirect infleunce to nudge people certainly seems to fit Jakob better. And, as Erich points out, Jakob is also somewhat morally ambiguous which probably fits Sobek better.
Well you can have everything pretty much explained (Kojima style) and be a little dissatisfied with it.
Or they can ignore those loose ends (Eko) and just adhere to their end goal. We’ll see. Personally as a movie (120+ min) I was extremely entertained. This was the original duo (Lindelof and Cuse) adding a whole new dimension very successfully.
I hated that Juliet had to die (and in such a cruel way). I think the best part of this excellent season was the Juliet/Sawyer relationship. Season 6 Sawyer is going to be scary (if he’s even alive).
Oh yeah, what is the deal with Claire?
I love the actor who plays Jacob. He’s ace.

Why everyone thinks Juliet died and everyone else is fine and dandy when A BOMB EXPLODED?
Because if the BOMB EXPLOSION was powerful enough to kill everyone else, the last season will consist of nothing but the smoke monster bobbing and weaving over a smoking crater half the size of the Island.
Or maybe the bomb actually changed OUR reality and this episode is now the series final.
More likely the explanation will be that the bomb was a partial dud (remember what Juliet had to do to get it to go off at all) and merely capped the hole to the energy source.
Or, the bomb actually more or less worked and the last season will show how things have changed for the Losties starting just before the plane crash in the old reality.
I liked how “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” the ending was.
The question is are they going to be zinged back by the incident, or do they have to do something else first?

Smoke Monster = Anti-Jacob. I think that’s pretty clear from contextual clues.
Jacob is the master of life / truth – healing, threads of destiny, patient cultivation
Anti-Jacob is the master of death / lies – murderous, illusions, taking the form of the dead
I think that all the life-threads that Jacob has been weaving are specifically because he foresaw this happening, totally agree with the “master plan” aspect there. It’s very clear that he’s a long-time frame player, setting things up way way way in advance.
One idea for the final season is that it resets to the point of the crash, but this time the Losties have the knowledge that they had before, and things quickly unfold in a totally different way. No clue of course… but I can’t wait for it. :)
