Which is an increasing annoyance as we round the final curve. Without context, we’re left with no clue as to what the stakes are, even - which has killed tension and enthusiasm for me.
I’m trying - my god, I’m trying. It’s best if I do something else while the show is on.
Better: ‘You leave now you can make it back to the temple before night.’

The real question is: has anyone shown signs of not feeling pain?
It seems clear that Sayid has passed to the dark side, the same for Claire. Maybe now we discover Ben could be tortured by Sayid because he doesn’t feel pain.
I assume some of you have been following “Doc” Jensen’s analyses of Lost on EW, but if you haven’t, this week’s is really good. Made me appreciate the episode more:

I love Claire…so glad to see her back.
On a technical note, just how many episodes for the last season?
Originally, it was going to be 16. They’ve had a couple of additional hours ordered, though. I think it still irons out to be 16 episodes in total, but something like 18 or 19 hours, but I’m just pulling it off the top of my head.

Uhm, that’s bad.
There’s the risk that the fanfiction in there is going to be way cooler than what the authors planned it to be…
He yabbers on quite a bit, and he goes WAY out there (and writes too much), but he also does a nice job, in places, of pointing out small thematic elements that tie together that I find interesting. He’s been doing these analyses for years and he doesn’t really take himself that seriously–I just find them to be an amusing read, with occasional moments of enlightenment. I couldn’t really care less, ultimately, what Lost is “about”. I’m just enjoying the ride.

It’s more than 16. After S4 got cut down the two extra episodes were divided by the two following seasons. So I believe we get 16 weeks of Lost with a technical count of 17 episodes because the premiere was episodes 1 and 2. And the last episode will just be an extra two hours.
So that makes for 19 hours of Lost this season. And we’re already down to 16 of them.

Was nobody else kind of annoyed by pretty much the whole Claire and Kate flashside? It was utterly ludicrous, and not in a “smoke monsters aren’t real” sort of way, in a “these actions are so against all logic and reason I feel like I’m taking crazy pills” sort of way.
If, as a pregnant woman on my own in a strange country, some total stranger in handcuffs hijacks my cab at gunpoint and nicks my bag, I’m not going to sit on a bench doing fanny adams until they come back. I’m going to call the police. You know, like absolutely everyone else in the whole civilised world. If they then come back, I am not going to get back in the cab with them just because they smile at me. I’m definitely not going to then ask them to be my best friend, confidant, and OB/GYN nurse within the space of two hours. I mean, seriously?
The island bits were slow but alright. It’s the start of the season, and worse still, it’s a Kate episode. You expect it to be slow for a couple of episodes. I seriously hope there’s more to Dogen than meets the eye though. He’s almost beyond parody. He’s not just torturing Sayid, he’s torturing Saïd too.
Yeah, that was kinda crazy, but I’m assuming there is some kind of emotional influence being exerted on the LAX timeline based on the relationships built on the island. So, Claire trusts Kate, but she’s not really sure why.
It is 2004, you’re in a foreign country, probably don’t have American quarters even if you could find a pay phone and you have no cell phone, how are you going to call the cops in the 20 or so minutes you are away from Kate? Yeah, you can go looking for someone to assist you, but if your first interaction with someone in a foreign country happens at gunpoint, why do you decide to just trust some random other person you happen to see next?
Getting into the car with Kate is a bit more of a stretch, but Claire didn’t really have a ton of options and Kate never seemed particularly threatening, despite the whole having a gun and swinging it around thing.

Yeah, I pretty much had to chalk it up to some sort of planes-of-reality-converging mumbo jumbo like that too, especially given the little deja vu moments people had been having. Nevertheless, it felt really contrived to me. Which was probably the point, knowing Lost’s focus on destiny and all that, but it felt wonkily executed enough for me to have a slightly tongue-in-cheek wobbly about it on a message board, at least.
EDIT: I see where you’re coming from CCZ, but to Claire, Kate at that point was just a random with a gun that gave her a warm fuzzy feeling in her tummy thanks to the Higgs Bosons from another universe or whatever. I’d say she was still pretty threatening. There’s definitely action she could have taken in those circumstances, even without money. Even just moving away from the scene, or waddling back to the airport as best she could.
I seriously doubt that this is true. My rule since Season 1: Don’t try to figure out character motivations and bizarre behavior around Kate. Just take it at face value, roll your eyes once, and then move on and forget about it.

I agree that the contrivances that lead to the flash sideways events where really illogical. Not just the Kate / Claire meet up but even the auto shop guy. Hello mr mechanic, I’m wanted for murder and have a gun in your face. Can you please trust me and let me use your bathroom? Swell! Maybe we’ll see more of him who knows.
Conversely I’m glad at how Jack dealt with the Sayid / pill issue on the island. At first I thought he actually was going to blindly follow the Last Samurai and convince Sayid to take the pill. It was a relief to see him take the matter into his own hands (or mouth). A much needed F-U to the other others.
The only thing that bugs me about the temple scenes is that they’re still going on that annoying “I’m going to be cryptic about everything I say” bullshit. Jack and pals have seen some pretty freakin’ unbelievable things since coming to the island. The Others know that and know who they are, yet are still completely unwilling to give up information that could help avoid things like Jack trying to swallow poison meant for the resurrected Sayid with the evil growing inside his body. It just feels a bit too blatant. I know it’s a TV show and they have to build tension and mystique, but some of those scenes are just irritating. I’m still really enjoying the show in general, though.
Wasn’t the mechanic Tom of the Others?

The First Power guy? He seemed to be emoting a little too much for a throwaway character. I can’t believe after all these seasons Kate episodes still bite.
Yep, Dodger, as I mentioned above.
China Beach, one of my all time favorites…
