Another bad episode. And more time wasted, and more people being stupid and mysteries for the sake of mysteries.
This episode is like a condensation of everything that sucks in Lost.
Yeah, I guess that’s right, so this just goes into the “look, they all ran into each other anyway somehow” file with the rest of it.

There could have been a Rousseau trip, they just wouldn’t have heard the signal and diverted to the island. Instead, they would have just completed their journey to wherever. According to Lostpedia, Alex was born in January of 1989.
For me, the best part of the night was the all but confirmation that Richard was on the Black Rock when it landed.

She has grown up quite a lot since Malcolm in the Middle. Of course, for a little while there I was getting a creepy, “You’re totally about to make out with your own adopted daughter in the different past,” but that’s probably just me projecting onto Ben.

No, you arent the only one. Both my wife and I said the way they filmed the first scene at Ben’s house was really creepy and didnt seem to reflect the way the two related the rest of the episode.

I really like Jack’s “Death Wish” attitude this season.
…and then I read her Wikipedia page. Maybe it was just her - apparently she spent some time going out with Jeff Goldblum, which apparently got her onto an episode of Criminal Intent. Maybe she’s just really into funny looking weird guys of a certain age. How much must it suck to be me, then - I’m funny looking, but clearly at least 10 years out of her target bracket. A woman I’ll never meet doesn’t want to sleep with me. Sad emoticon.
I’m about to start the Geronimo Jack’s Beard podcast - I’ll be interested to see if Hurley and his inexplicably hot co-host have anything to say about the behind the scenes on any of this.
“Inexplicably hot?” Aw, c’mon. I think Garcia’s adorable, and I’m not surprised he has a hot girlfriend.
Great episode. The sideflashes didn’t seem to fit the pattern of the others though – Ben turned out okay in both of them, saving his daughter in one and redeeming himself in the other.
Best episode of the season so far. I really liked the parallels of Ben’s quasi-redemption between both timelines, and I think it’s the first time they’ve managed to make the flash-sideways integrate well with the main storyline.
I find it interesting that the different past is STILL objectively better for almost everybody than The Island timeline. The only people who seem to be worse off so far are the ones that are hanging out with The Lockeness Monster. John has accepted his limitations and finally retired his catchphrase and is married to Leela, Ben became a better person, Jack has a strained but positive relationship with his son that he actually has…hell, even Boone hasn’t had to deal with creepy sort of half-incestuous sex with his not-really-a-sister.
Don’t forget Hurley. Out of everyone he made out best in the alternate timeline.
Well, we don’t know that yet. He could be rich and lucky and still unhappy. But you’re probably right.
What’s the score so far on sideflashes? Ben and Jack turned out pretty well, Locke and Sayid did not. Kate and Claire, I dunno. Seems fairly obvious that their fates on the island and their alternate fates are the same.
I think alternate Locke turned out ok.
Locke gave up hope. That’s bad.
I don’t think he gave up hope. He accepted his condition and didn’t want to chase after things. Up until that epiphany, he hated his wheelchair and his condition, and it seemed like he wanted to walk to be able to walk down the aisle with Helen. He seemed a much better person once he decided “this is my lot in life. All things told, it’s not bad.”
Also, since we know he has a good relationship with his father, we can assume pops wasn’t the one who tossed him out a window, paralyzing him.
A good like situation is Robert Ebert’s current condition with his voice. It’s possible another surgery could restore his voice. He’s had enough of that. I would NOT say Ebert has given up hope.
He says to Helen “There are no miracles” or something to that effect. That’s a reversal of everything Locke was. When Ben gives Locke’s eulogy, that’s how he is described: a true believer. He accepts his lot in life by giving up on the possibility of anything better.

I think I’ll take lots of people being not-dead over the hapiness of a handful.
Everything Locke was, however, was bad. He was a chump, and kind of a stupid one at that. He spent his entire life chasing lies and getting manipulated by people who took advantage of his naivete. I would contend that it is better to be satisfied with the things you have than to be constantly in search of something more.
Anyone with a crush on Illana should go watch season 2 of “Rome”, you won’t be dissapointed. She was also in the decent one season show “New Amsterdam” and believe it or not, the old X-Files spin-off “Lone Gunmen”.
Of all the “Flash 2004” episodes so far, last night’s Ben-centric one was the only one I’ve really enjoyed. Sayid was OK but not great, and the others have been pretty terrible so far, but the strength of the Ben Linus character really carried this one. I too was shocked to see Mario Van Peebles directing (though I know he directs and produces a lot of stuff now) and I wonder how much of the different feel to this episode was his influence.
I’m still not sold on this whole “war” concept though, and I’m bracing myself for a really lame letdown to the series after all this build-up. Hopefully I’ll be pleasantly surprised.
