I held off playing much this weekend after coming back last week. I figured why relearn the interface after a 2-year hiatus only to have to relearn it all over again the next week? I’ve been reading up on features I’m unfamiliar with such as skirmishes and all these crazy tokens (tokens in my Tolkien?!). Hopefully someone will have a nice writeup on the Helm’s Deep changes as well.

I finally got around to watching that video and, honestly, I’m much less concerned about changes to the Hunter class now. The Huntsman trait line is going to play much the same as I do now and all of our basic skills remain largely unchanged. The only concern remaining to me at this point are reports that Hunters are now so over-powered that you can just repeat the same three attack kill sequences ad naseum but I’ll reserve judgement as it seems most of the complaints on the forums were (surprise!) overblown.

If anything, this opens up two new play styles for Hunters, one for people who enjoy dancing around while they fight and one for people who wish they were playing a Burglar.

Assuming it stacks, and this link works properly (my first time gifting with the new system), here is my Humble url for the LOTRO bonus stuff. I don’t have time to get into the game myself, so I would rather someone else make use of it and enjoy the extra TP and other bonuses. I broke the link up with a few extra spaces in hopes that it may avoid the attention of evil freebie stealing bots that like to roam forums and ruin people’s fun, so some assembly is required.

Launch day! Apparently the patch is complete for folks who have tried to download it but the servers are not back up yet.

file 1200 of 12000 here :)

Wouldn’t it have been better for them to patch some of this content ahead of launch while people were playing and just do bit-patching with whatever content changed to retail instead of having to grab everything now.

I’ve wondered that myself. Servers are up. Release notes here:

So far so good. Finished patching, logged right in. Then sat through about 10 minutes of re-arranged deed spam, and now I have to remember how I had my legendary points set up.

84 percent and counting! Anyone else excited about the new Epic battles? I am, and of course all the new stuff with talent trees will be interesting as well.

Its just amazing that, even with a storage device with 95.000 IOPS/1700MB/s transfer speed I get slowdowns in LOTRO when riding a mount quickly towards a village… Its so damn annoying and just got me killed as I rode into a warband that I “lagged” into before it was fully loaded.

Feels like I am playing a game on a sub-par computer, but its probably just something to do with the game only using 2.5GB of memory instead of using the whole 16GB free mem I have available to ‘pre-cache’ assets in the surrounding area to reduce the load. With such a fast storage device it shouldn’t be as noticeable/horrible as it is now without something seriously wrong.

Have you tried the OSX client? It’s not much better than win32 for me and personally I’d steer well clear. The best experience out there IMO is the windows client under WINE opengl but, so fiddly as to be beyond most folks’ patience. A trivial thing to try is moving the install and temp directories to ramdisk.

If it was aimed at me, I’m on Windows 8 so I’m using the ancient 32-bit client. See with Intel XTU that the CPU was never above 10% while playing. If I can be bothered I’ll have to investigate further to see what is causing the slowdowns. FPS drops from 61 (locked) to 10-5 whenever the lag occurs as well.

Re: Big Battles. Apparently you can only do 1 per day for XP, the rest of the time you only get some marks and possibly a “unlocks”. So its 2005 mmo design all over again. The least they could do was give you a “weekly” allotment of 7, and let you do them at your leisure, either 7 all at once when you have time, or 4 one day and 3 the next – or any other combination. Now you are “forced” to login every day if you want to do them all. Which I suppose is good for the population in the short term, but maybe detrimental in the long term as people might feel that the game is dictating their play style.

(Did 2 BBs and only got XP at 3 points during the 30 minutes it took during the first one). Maybe it was a poor version of it, but I felt it was pretty tame. Helms Deep looked nice in the distance when looking towards it from the wooden fortress wall I was atop of, though.

LotRO’s always been pretty bad about prefetching data it might need. Does the map still cause the game to hang the first time you open it in a zone, even if you’ve been there for an hour? I used to pop open the map as soon as I entered a zone, just to get that stall out of the way.

Then, they do crazy prefetch things like load historical skirmish data while logging in, as a blocking action. They at least said they fixed that semi-recently.

So, about those “Epic battles”? They blow. They consist of me running between two points and clicking whatever I can click, and thats it. Nothing fun in that at all.

I appreciate that they are trying to give us options, but this? Its nothing more than poorly reskinned skirmishes and not even remotely fun.

Edit: The new traits are pretty fun, and I kinda like them. I just took the DPS tree with all my characters though.

editedit: Anyone else play Wardens? I can’t for the life of me figure out how to play my warden anymore, since most of my builder skills are gone for some reason?

1: That is my reaction as well. Albeit only tried one (twice). Felt like I could enter one and go AFK for 30 minutes.
2: Wardens: I have an alt that I liked to play before patch, I dread checking it now – considering how much I dislike (this?) change on my Burglar.

The good news is that with this update you can increase your bank and shared vault size more, just perfect for all the new task items that still lack a tooltip saying what level range they are for - so you are forced to use “DailyTasks” and parse the command line output to find which items goes to which character that can still use it…

LOTRO desperately needs a GW2 style -bank- feature accessible from everywhere where you can deposit TASK and CRAFTING items.

Played some last night, pretty much my first serious night of play since returning after a nearly 2-year hiatus. It took me over 30 minutes just to sort out what happened with my button bars, where half my skills disappeard to, and figure out how to retrait with the new skill tree. I’m probably not “doing it right” because I spread my points across skills in all three (blue, yellow, red) trees to try and rebuild what I had before on my Champion. It didn’t seem to lessen his combat ability though, he still chews through single and double mobs with ease. I did notice though that I’m down to a single AOE regular attack, with the others I used to have being unlockables further down the skill tree. Perhaps I need to look more carefully at the trees and probably respec as mostly blue.

When I was finally ready for action I decided to go easy to start with and knock out a couple of deeds I had that were very close to completion. So I killed mostly gray and a few light blue mobs to get those out of the way and feel a sense of accomplishment while getting back into the rythem of combat. Got a lot of faction items as drops. When did the change the loot system from clickable corpses to the little loot bag you click to gather all your haul? That’s kind of a cool improvement. Seems like it would be handy when you run out of inventory space as well.

I also received a bunch of what used to be pure vendor trash, only now it says they have tasks attached to them. I found the task board in Bree, but it was way below my level (42). I assume I can mail one olf my lower level alts all this stuff and they can turn it in for tasks much the way I mail them the faction items I don’t need?

I did not try a skirmish or anything yet. Skirmishes had only just been implemented when I stopped playing, so I have a soldier and built him up a bit, but have no idea what’s changed since then and don’t recall how skimishes work or why I would want to bother. I have a bunch of marks though, so I suppose I should use them at some point.

What’s with the hobbit gifts? Seems like a lame way to make you spend real money to get the “gold” present daily.

Hobbit gifts are mostly vendor trash or alt-items to be honest, nothing to get excited about.
Although they might be better now that items go to level 95… since I’m still 85. When you “roll” you’ll be able to see all the items so you can get a sense for whats in there.

Skirmishes are great, the new epic battles - not so much :)

For the tasks I recommend you get this addon:
www.lotrointerface.com/downloads/info498-DailyTasksreference.html

Once installed in your equivalent of C:\Users\oOOo\Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online\Plugins
You’ll have it available ingame.
Type /plugins manager

Then you can for example type

/dt – list task items you have
/dtc – list task items you have that can be completed
/dtx – List task that you are not the right level for
/dtj – list task items that are not task items (i.e. JUNK for vendors).
/dtw – opens the window, which lets you check your VAULT or SHARED VAULT for task items.

The performance issue with the game is pissing me off a lot more than it should.

Quick refuting - I get blue very good items through hobbit gifts, and nice buffs like + run speed, attack bonus and xp bonus’s and the like.

Yeah, note that skills outside your chosen trait-line are twice as expensive so you won’t get nearly the return on your investment of points if you spread them out too evenly. The cap-stone skill you get in your chosen trait-line is generally crazy good so I think the way to go is to first concentrate on unlocking that, saving points back from skills that are less useful to spend in the other trait-lines once you unlock the capstone. With my 75 Hunter I was able to put the majority of my points into the red trait-line while saving back enough to dump into the first two blue-line skills.

When did the change the loot system from clickable corpses to the little loot bag you click to gather all your haul? That’s kind of a cool improvement. Seems like it would be handy when you run out of inventory space as well.

That was with the last major update. I’m not sure how I ever got by before that change.

I also received a bunch of what used to be pure vendor trash, only now it says they have tasks attached to them. I found the task board in Bree, but it was way below my level (42). I assume I can mail one olf my lower level alts all this stuff and they can turn it in for tasks much the way I mail them the faction items I don’t need?

instant0’s plugin sounds like it will take some of the guess work out of it but, in general, check the task boards in the on-level areas where you quest. I’ve mostly stopped bothering except in cases where the task gives hard to get reputation, such as Limlight Gorge. I am trying to power level my Champion though so I might have him turn in tasks for the xp.

It seems like some folks here disagree but I find the skirmishes to be a mostly boring time sink after the first pass through. I think they nerfed the amount of skirmish points you get for standard skirmishes at some point which really makes them almost entirely pointless. (The bulk of my skirmish points were either won in lotteries or collected during the anniversary events where you can exchange world drop coins for skirmish points at a very good rate.)

What’s with the hobbit gifts? Seems like a lame way to make you spend real money to get the “gold” present daily.

I never do anything other than the silver present. I’ve actually had some decent luck. My Hunter has almost a complete set of level 75 armor (including a gold item) with stats better than anything on-level aside from the level 75 raid gear. (Oddly, I got these items on successive days early on. I wonder if they put their thumb on the scales when the Hobbit presents were first introduced to entice folks into buying gold presents.) The silver and copper scraps are also a nice source of free gold.

I played a little on my Hunter last night. I wanted to see if I could solo an on-level troll in Limlight Gorge but it’s been so long since I last played and I was so distracted that I forgot to buff myself or even using healing potions once I first started taking damage! I have no idea what I was thinking. Anyway, even given this massive brainfart, I came really, really close so I suspect a less idiotic attempt would be successful.

I was hoping for 1st age items, so useless until I get that :-)

Edit: Its a nice addition to the game for sure, and I’d like to keep it, but I wouldn’t spend any coins to open bags. Already got burned (badly) doing that with Chests in RIFT.

I think symbols of the Elder King may drop really, really rarely? Or is that just wishful thinking? It seems like the sort of thing they would do to get people gambling mithril coins.
