LOTRO to relaunch as free to play?

So, I’ve kind of jumped in with both feet in the last day or two, and am doing a little bit of relearning to play. (Virtues? Traits??) I’ve managed to get a Warden leveled to 17 in a pretty short amount of time, so they’ve definitely relaxed the leveling curve a lot. It’s also nice to not have to loot bodies anymore!

I’ve also kind of jumped in on Middle Earth lore again, too. It’s been maybe 25 years since I’ve re-read LOTR, so I’m doing that, too!

At any rate, the 99 LOTRO point expansions and FREELOTROQUESTS deal between now and the end of August is a seriously freakish amount of free good MMO gaming that’s just become available.

I love this game, and have sunk probably close to a 1000 hours into it, over the years, with my lifetime membership. I always do get bogged down in the same two areas - not being able to focus on ONE character, and doing waayyy too much crafting, which takes an insame amount of time.

Do any of you guys do a lot of crafting? If so, how do you avoid burning out on it?

Are the 99 LOTRO point expansions and instance clusters live in the store yet? I was having all sorts of issues getting the store to even load over the weekend, and when I finally did manage to get it to appear last night there were no available expansions or instance clusters. It could just be that I already own them all, as I purchased the retail versions of Moria, Mirkwood, Isengard and Rohan when they came out. But I’m not sure if I own the Helm’s Deep content. There doesn’t seem to be an easy way to check what you own either.

And you’re right, there’s not an easy way to see what you own already. But per some guidance I found on Reddit and on the LOTRO forums themselves:

1. Log in a character, even if it means creating one because all your fershlugginer characters are on a closed server and you may never get them back. (Grrr. Some day, hopefully!)

2. Enter the game. Go to the LOTRO store in game.

3. Start with going straight to the “Redeem a code” tab. Type FREELOTROQUESTS and it’ll give you every quest pack you don’t already own.

4. Now go to Account and Content on the left side. Choose Expansions.

5. It will show you the main expansion packs that you do not already own that are 99 LOTRO points to buy.

Weird, I did all that and the Expansions tab is empty as is the instances tab. However I DO NOT own Mordor or Minas Morgul, and they are not part of the promotion, so they should show up there I would imagine? The Standing Stones LOTRO site says Minas Morgul should be available in store for 2495 LOTRO points.

Ah well, it would appear I own everything through Helm’s Deep from previous purchases and now all the additional region quest packs from the code redemption, so I’m more than good for now. Mordor and Minas Morgul will probably reappear after all the freebie stuff is over with.

My Warden went Woodworker. You can eventually craft your own 1st Age Legendary items (both Spear and Javelin). You can also craft your own pocket items as you level (Carvings)

That’s my understanding, @SlainteMhath. I’m in the same boat: I’ve purchased everything save for Mordor and Minas Morgul, but they don’t show as available for me to purchase, as they’re still free for now.

Do any of you guys do a lot of crafting? If so, how do you avoid burning out on it?

I have alts so I can do all the craftings myself. The major problem is getting wood and ore, but my main character that I do leveling with usually gets enough of those materials from loot to be able to ‘process’ to the next tier.

In terms of leveling crafting, I do it very casually, and usually have it done with Skirmish materials and the xperience recipes you can buy per tier. As well as crafting guild stuff. This means I do one craft every 2 or so days (when I remember) due to the cooldown, so not very often in other words.

I been slacking my metal and weaponsmith so they are only on tier 3 crafting.

And Open the file “LotroLauncher.log”, it shows everything your account is entitled to.

I finished the Minas Morgul expansion today but I didn’t hit max level (129). I did all the quests + instances except for the one that requires you to complete a scourge deed (same as Roving Threats?) and the 12 man raid Shelob thing which requires max level?

The one trend I noticed is they allow you to do all instances solo. As in there is a solo/duo tier. I think it started with the grey mountains dwarven-lands quest pack. Whatever it was called.

Correct me if I am wrong.

The one trend I noticed is they allow you to do all instances solo. As in there is a solo/duo tier. I think it started with the grey mountains dwarven-lands quest pack. Whatever it was called.

I’m also interested in this. I’ve been avoiding instances as I’ve leveled up, and even skipped and come back to a few group quests that are in the main character storyline to solo.

It’d be cool to find out that they can be soloed, if with some difficulty.

Also: for how long have Hunters been LOTRO EZmode?

Many of the them that call for a Small Fellowship will let you solo and give you an “Inspiration” buff for a Morale boost and damage, etc, so you can do many of those (you might get a couple of levels ahead of it to help as well). There’s certainly 5-mans still in there that you would not be able to solo unless you outlevel it greatly.

I went back as a 50+ to do the Barrow Mounds instance but it had a mechanic where you couldn’t advance unless you beat X enemies in a room within Y seconds and I couldn’t do it alone, so YMMV.

And sometimes I’ll deliberately go slow on the buttons just to let a mob get close to almost melee. I like them to feel like they’re doing well!

Meanwhile, my burglar has 1 ranged skill on a cooldown- dagger throw – I use it as often as I can to see that sweet 0.1% hp damage on the mob.

Does the fact they are ezmode mean they are also useless/less desired for groups? I’m mostly a soloer myself, but like characters that aren’t completely trash when it does come time to team up. I believe once upon a time Minstrel was the choice for this style of play, because you were competent enough to solo well, and you just switch toolsets for groups.

Hunters are decent enough for grouping because of the absurd DPS, I’d imagine. I think Minis are still the healer choice of highest preference, but a Runie is super versatile too and can switch from great DPS to heals depending on the group composition – or so I’m led to believe.
