Help! My mother-in-law’s computer is falling prey to that virus that causes Windows to shut down and restart whenever she’s connected to the 'net. I remember having to fix this on my computer a while back, but am having some trouble with hers. Mainly because she’s on a dialup modem and I can’t download Windows Updates before the virus hits and the computer reboots.
Can anyone offer any suggestions for dealing with this? Is there a URL that I can look at that gives directions for disabling this virus so I can download the security updates?
Fire-up task manager and look for any processes that shouldn’t be there. It may be called blaster something or other.

Turn on ICF if they’re using WinXP - if you’re using Win2000 and on dialup you’re hosed.
It’s probably Sasser, not Blaster.

if it’s the “THIS COMPUTER WILL SHUT DOWN IN TEN SECONDS” thing…
winkey+R for a Run dialog, then enter “shutdown -a”.
This aborts the shutdown. From there you can fix it all normal-like.
Yeah, it’s that Sasser thing. I had to remove it from my father-in-law’s computer.
