Unfortunately, the replay ran out just before the helicopter leap, but I did snap a few frames of events leading up to it. I really hope they include a screenshot function in Madden 11, so I don’t have to break an actual camera out every time I want to grab a still.

That’s free safety Tanard Jackson trying to put the wall up, while middle linebacker Barrett Ruud closes in from behind.

Wow, Heath even looks terrified as what’s about to transpire. I saw the safety crouch and figured “Jump over him!” - I totally did NOT see Ruud coming up from behind.

I like how #21 is recognizing the car wreck before it happens and seems to be running away shouting “SAVE YOURSELVES!”

And my connection horfs three times in a row once Strummer does make it, so as not to spend all day playing one game of Madden, the Game of the Week is rescheduled for Monday at 7 PM CST.

The first game crapped out with New Orleans up 14-0 in the third quarter just after a ridiculous Reggie Bush catch after three deflections, and the second game died in the first quarter. The third game never happened as my connection flatlined before we got past the playbook screen.

Hopefully tomorrow will go better.

He’s on right now, maybe he thought it was 11:40 Central.

Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Actually, I just flaked. My son wanted me to play Star Wars Galaxies with him and I just lost track of the time. My apologies.

As Matt indicated, connection problems forced us to delay until tomorrow.

Wait a minute…

Star Wars Galaxies still exists !?

Very fun game. I really liked how tense the last drive was, unfortunately for me I blinked first and tossed the INT.

All my games, win or lose, have been really good this year.

Maybe its because folks had a chance to shore up their weaknesses with the draft or maybe they are just more familiar with the game. Maybe both.

Heh, yes, I guess it does. I hadn’t played for years, but my son loves Star Wars and has started enjoying MMO-ish games (Toontown, Wizard 101, Roblox, etc) so I just re-subbed a couple days ago as I though he might like it.

Well, I’ve got two weeks to figure this out, or I have to drop out.

Strummer and I failed to play again for the fifth time in two days. It dies on my end mid-game. I drop connection to the peer and it kills the game, and strummer gets the option to continue vs. the AI or stop. How this has happened:

Game freezing on the way to the line of scrimmage, forcing hard reset of 360.
Game locking up on load, then kicking back out to End Game with dropped connection.
Game locking twice on play select screen with me cycling through plays. I let go of the controller but it keeps scrolling for about 15 seconds before lost connection to peer, kicking me out.
Game locking up in mid-play and kicking me out, lost to peer.

I’ve tried restarting my router, the modem, all of that standard PC troubleshooting stuff, and I don’t have any issues with playing Madden conventionally or losing connection during any of my other games, be they PC, PS3, or 360. Most times I’m not even dropped out of Xbox Live when this happens, minus the actual lock-ups.

I’m incredibly frustrated. And not just because I was winning! I enjoy my games against the Panthers a lot, and all of them were very good for the anywhere from 10 to 1 minute we got to play them. But this isn’t doable.

I’ll play someone later other than strummer in a random game to see if it’s me, but Talisker, we’re just letting the AI handle ours. I’ve wasted about four hours trying to get one game in, and the frustration’s not worth it.

Next week is a bye. If I can’t get it sorted out between now and my Week 9 game with Omniscia, I’ll leave the league so as to not get in the way.

If you see me on Live, shoot me an invite – I’ll gladly help you play a test game. I’ve only had one online game fail out so far (out of both leagues and other online play), so I should be a reasonably stable test end.

On an unrelated note, Phillip Buchanon is no longer the Lions’ p/k return man, after fumbling on two different punt returns vs. the Packers.

Two weeks and counting until we get Stafford back from his hip injury!

So when we roll over to week 8, the 2-4 Steelers face the 6-1 Ravens. After fuzzyslug’s public calling-out of the Steelers’ 91-36 loss in Week 2 on the Games Podcast this week, I think the Ravens have earned themselves a solid beating.

Fuzzy! When would be a convenient time for you to die?

So last night’s game against Technoverse’s Bears was a perfect illustration of the difference between a pretty good Madden player and a really good Madden player. Despite putting up 31 points and holding Forte to 24yds on 10 carries, and the Bears overall to 267 yds of offense, I lost 38-31. You really can’t make mistakes against a player like Techno and hope to win. I didn’t make many, but he took advantage of every single one for either a TD or a long gain - of his 267 yards, 140 came on 3 plays.

The game started well for me, I stopped his first drive and marched for a TD. (BTW, it seems like every 4th down the game puts me into a weird playcalling screen that only has punt block formations and I have to back all the way out and find “Special Teams” in order to pick a return play. Does this happen to anyone else?) Next series, I made my first big mistake - blitzed the LB that was supposed to cover the flat and didn’t get over with safety help quickly enough to stop a 35 yard pass to his FB. Managed to hold him to a FG though and then scored a 2nd TD to make it 14-3.

2nd quarter started with a complete defensive breakdown on my part. It’s like my brain decided to take a play off. First of all I froze at the play screen and didn’t pick a defense in time so the game just put me into a base Cover 2. That wouldn’t have been terrible except that for some reason I proceeded to play my safety as if I had actually called the defense I wanted. Yeah, I don’t know, it’s a mystery to me too. In any case, it led to one of the most open receivers I’ve ever seen and a 50 yd TD for the Bears to make it 14-10. I still wasn’t too worried - it was a one time lapse and he still hadn’t even slowed down my offense. Sure enough, I marched for a 3rd TD (a pretty corner route to TO in the back of the end zone) to make it 21-10. He responded with a nice drive to make it 21-17. My offense took a pretty big blow when my rookie HB LeRon James, who had been nigh unstoppable (50yds on 6 carries, 34 yds on 3 recepts) went out for the rest of the game with an injury. Not being able to pick up 5-10 yards per run really took my offense out of rhythm and I started pressing. The game really turned on 1 play near the end of the 1st half. I had managed to get some momentum back and had 3rd and 5 inside the Bears’ 30. I was hoping to score, go into halftime with either a 7 or 10 point lead, and get the ball back to start the 2nd half. I had Owens running a 10yd curl from the slot, tried to get it to him a half beat early because there was a seam in the coverage and either because it was early or because it was just a bad throw the ball sailed over his head and right into the arms of the Bears’ safety who proceeded to run it back 80 yds for a TD. It was the only turnover of the game, but it was a killer. 21-24 at the half.

The 2nd half was somewhat less interesting. Basically I gave up 2 big plays: a 97yd kickoff return by Hester and a 50yd TD run on a weak-side toss that I knew to watch for, had been watching for the entire game, and then when it came completely blew it because I cheated my safety to the strong side. (Plus, my open field tackling skills are mediocre at best.) I did manage to get my offense back on track and put up some points, but with James out and me playing from behind, Techno was able to sit back in zones and keep me from getting anything deep and I just took too much time. I did close to within 7 with a minute left, but I have no idea how to pull off an onside kick in Madden.

Speaking of kicking, I suck at it. I’m fine offline, but I can never get the timing right in online games. I mention this just so everyone knows that if it’s 4th-and-makeable anywhere between the 20 and the 40, I’m going to go for it rather then fail a FG. If this bothers anyone from a realism standpoint, just pretend this post is the press conference where the coach says that he’s lost confidence in his kicker.

One random note: I’ve mentioned before that weird run-off of the play clock after change of possession. You’d think by now I’d have learned to deal with it, but once again I got caught for a delay of game penalty. In a very cool move, Techno declined the penalty. Thanks. (Although I didn’t know that you could decline a dead ball foul. Then again, Madden seems to enforce holding calls from the spot of the foul, so it’s playing by its own rules already)

Anyway, great game Techno.

BTW, Fuzzyslug, that DE of mine that gave you so much trouble when we played? Out for the season.

It automatically switches on 4th down to “What Would John Madden Do?” mode. Which is often “Eat a donut and blather”.

BTW, Fuzzyslug, that DE of mine that gave you so much trouble when we played? Out for the season.

Oh, happy day! Since I get to play you again

Ahh, that makes sense. I’ve never used anything but the “By Formation” screens so I didn’t realize. Jesus, but John is a crazy aggressive motherfucker. I’ve never even seen a successful blocked punt and yet he really, really wants me to keep trying.

I almost always call Punt Block against the AI, since that pulls them into Max Protect Punt 90% of the time, and either they’ll intentionally punt it short and out of bounds, or no one will be downfield to cover my speedy punt returner.

Teams punt against you?

ZING !!!

Ho-lee shit! Do you challenge me to a duel, sir?

Ha ha, yes. Granted, I played the Chefs which isn’t like playing a real team. But to compare…

Week 1: Doesn’t count, the AI played that one.
Week 2: You punted twice against me, bastard! All talking shit…
Week 3: Chiefs punted six times. They have a decent special teams unit, though.
Week 4: Bye
Week 5: Oranges punted once.
Week 6: Saints punted twice, one run back for a TD.
Week 7: Bucs punted six times.

So yeah, Kemnavus Stillwell and Davarius Tanelus are earning their pay.

Oh man, you just wait until Week 13…

And wait one cotton-pickin’ minute here, Jimmy! Your Bills have a worse record than my Steelers! Buffalo will speak when spoken to!
