Shitty how many jobs this applies to in today’s America:
Good on her for finding ways to make ends meet and I see nothing to be shamed over, but it’s so fucking sad that a paramedic can’t make ends meet on their salary.
Her paramedic job pays $25/ hour. That won’t go far in NY. Evidently, she also worked a third job as a hostess in a Korean restaurant.
Her gofundme is up to $70k. Sometimes, people don’t suck.
Doesn’t Time always make the new president person of the year? The big difference this year is that the VP was included.
Since the list began, every serving president of the United States has been a Man or Person of the Year at least once with the exceptions of Calvin Coolidge (in office at time of the first issue), Herbert Hoover (the subsequent U.S. president), and Gerald Ford. Most were named Man or Person of the Year either the year they were elected or while they were in office; the only one to be given the title before being elected is Dwight D. Eisenhower, in 1944 as Supreme Commander of the Allied Invasion Force, eight years before his election. He subsequently received the title again in 1959, while in office. Franklin D. Roosevelt is the only person to have received the title three times, first as president-elect (1932) and later as the incumbent president (1934 and 1941).
True, but this is the first time the outgoing occupant of the White House is a 20-stone toddler.
Just a good example of a headline that totally fails at its goal of conveying information. WaPo:
California, the new epicenter, has more coronavirus cases than most countries in the world.
This, of course, is not surprising. California has more people than most countries in the world: 40 million, while the median country has 10 million or so (depending on how you define “country.”) Even if it had exactly the same rate of disease as, say, Canada (population 38 million) you’d still expect California to have more cases than Canada.
But what really makes California stand out compared to other countries is that it has a much higher rate than most countries in the world, including quite big countries. California has had somewhat more total Covid cases than Germany, for example. But California has only half of Germany’s population. You won’t find out any of that in the article, though.
Why dissect this particular headline? Because it gives ammunition to the know-nothings: “Stupid lamestream media! Everyone knows California is bigger than all those piddly little European countries. That’s why they have more cases. Fake news!” When that’s not what’s going on at all. Not that you’d know that by reading the headline, or even the body of the article.

Do the know-nothings really know that?

CA should’ve been hit hard in the Spring, and it was mostly under control then. Of course that’s before our idiot leader went around with herd immunity and it’s not a big deal claims. It’s hard to combat messaging from the top… not many states are doing well with that.
We’re getting slammed now, for all that Newsom was early on the lockdown thing. It’s frustrating. Cat’s out of the bag, we’re all just hunkering down waiting for the vaccine now, I guess.

Based on infection rates I feel like we’re in the minority and everyone else is out there partying.

I’ve heard vaccines are actually shipping in larger quantities and sooner than expected. I hope not to curse that momentum but there it is.

COVID can’t be contained in the US anymore, not through policy anyway. Young people don’t care, religious conservatives don’t care, minority communities can’t contain it, political abdication reigns, the people clamour for freedom and declare it a hoax while dying of it. Vaccine really is our only hope.
If there’s another facet of American history other than racism that’s constant, it is that Americans would literally rather die than change even a little bit. Sometimes that National character is an asset. Those times however are quite specific and rare.

He’s been too old for awhile now, and whenever David Brooks shows up he seems mildly bemused his foil is this respected but clearly in his dotage old guy, and so tends to solipsize more than debate.

You know Trump is on the way out because it’s the return of slow news days.
Apparently, while our first shipment was on-target here in NC, the second shipment was smaller than expected. Obviously, early days, but this scientifically meaningless trend-line don’t look so hot for us, at least :(
