Why is CNN playing the role of DeSantis fluffer?
RayRayK
3308
My guess is they wrote about him because Florida, Texas, California, and New York were major focus states during the last year. Say what you will about DeSantis, his gamble seems to have paid off (although we aren’t out of the woods yet) and he is now a major 2024 contender.

It certainly helps when you hide and obfuscate your data. I don’t think anyone knows what’s really going on in Florida, including DeSantis.
RayRayK

Maybe he took a page from Cuomo’s playbook?
Menzo
3311
Cuomo is an asshole and should resign. Are you trying to “both sides” this using him as an example? Try again.
RayRayK
3312
I was making a joke because Cuomo also rode high on his COVID response until the data issues came to the forefront.

DeSantis is a trumpier Trump. A pure asshole.
Where does DeSantis go for his apology??
Yeah, all this really. It sucks, but sometimes the dumbass move pays off and the dumbass looks like a hero. Some bad data could come out later, but I don’t think it would hurt him anyway because for every negative stat, there’s going to be a shot of happy beachgoers spending money.

We’ve already seen that the constituency of hard-right Trumpers who he needs support from in the primaries wouldn’t have cared if a few million people died, so if his ambition is the White House, he’s in good shape.

It’s actually the ultimate kind of Overton windowing that happens all the time in the US - look at how one murdered woman in the UK has set off a firestorm of self critique and worry around their country, but 8 women murdered in a mass shooting in the US is just an unfortunate statistic. Being average in one of the worst western countries for COVID is really winning by low expectations.

Hell, the eight people being murdered wasn’t even the top headline when I looked at CNN. It was superseded by the DeSantis fluff piece I linked.

So is it Florida’s climate that helped out here? Hot and humid probably aren’t the best conditions for spreading the virus.
It isn’t really like Florida is doing / has done well against covid. Is it?

As the article indicates their performance is middling based on the state’s published numbers. But they did mediocre by doing almost nothing!
Weird flex but ok.
KevinC
3322
Well, it’s not true they did nothing. They did fire their data scientist because she wouldn’t go along with the manipulation they were wanting to do.
Florida is currently eighth worst in daily new cases per 100k, 5th worst in positive test rate, fifth worst in ICU bed burden, 12th worst in vaccination pace, and the second most at-risk state in the Union.
It doesn’t look like they got mediocre results from doing nothing.

The title of that shit piece makes me want to vomit blood.

I think the flex is that they were able to keep their economy going without facing negative consequences for doing so. That’s why being in the middle of the pack is cited as evidence of the lack of harmful impact by keeping the economy open.
