It’s in comparison to other states in the context of implementing COVID restrictions. Canada seems like an odd comparison, it would be like comparing Florida to Japan.
Why won’t anyone think about the economy! As if the states that actually tried to make an effort against a deadly pandemic didn’t. You are a fucking idiot.

And those are the numbers they potentially made up.
Is this where we play the “Unique American Experience” card and pretend diseases spread differently once they cross a line on a map?

If you want to compare the USA to other countries that’s a fair comparison. Comparing a state to another country is disingenuous without proper context and scene setting about why that comparison is being made instead of comparisons to other countries.
Sorry I missed this. Never said I supported Florida’s policies, thank you for playing!
Florida is full of Canadians.
But the point is actually DOING something reduces the death toll by tens of thousands.

Which is why they are comparing to other states, many of whom used stricter COVID policies.

This is like a C student saying, “well, other people studied and did worse, so clearly studying is useless”.

Never realized it was controversial to compare apples to apples.
…and then we learn that the C student is actually a D student, and maybe even an F student.

And the C student gets lauded and commended for their amazing grades. Maybe with a little studying, they would have received a B or B+.
Putting DeSantis aside, regardless of what was going on at the state level did any Florida counties or municipalities institute their own restrictions during the pandemic?
In Utah, despite the federal response of the Trump administration being abysmal, we had to issue our own statewide mandate. Salt Lake had more restrictions as well. Whatever grade Utah gets, do we chalk that up to Trump’s leadership on the pandemic?

So it’s fair to compare South Dakota and New York, which basically have nothing at all in common other than the Feds didn’t do shit for either of them?
You can even set that aside, since many citizens themselves are taking precautions despite what the governor tells them to do. An awful lot of the efficacy of various measures is tied up in whether people do them, not whether governments demand them or enforce them.

And then there is spring break and bike week.

Depending on the stat being compared (like gross versus per capita), why wouldn’t it be?
I was thinking about this earlier. Some part of the Covid spread caused by Florida’s laxity is going to get recorded somewhere else, right? Spring break students go back where they came from, then get sick, then infect others there, etc.

“These are the same thing in regards to disease transmission and the like.”
I’m out.

So we can’t compare South Dakota and New York on say the poverty rate? I mean states are compared against each other all the time, including by the government. Any comparison is between different things, but what unites South Dakota and New York is they are both operate as part of a larger system, the United States, Canada is not part of that same system.
Cool lets compare Florida and Vermont

I look forward to seeing it!
Canadians react to viruses differently from real Americans, because Canadians lack the exceptional Americanism of our immune systems. Everyone knows that,
