Oh, yes, that is exactly what I said. That’s my beef with Thiessen. Totally.
Actually, I was replying to vinraith, your post snuck in there while I was typing.

I don’t watch PBS Newshour, but I would dispute this assertation about NPR. Especially if you have an area with a local newsdesk and department. I don’t know if this would be true of Hawaii, but it absolutely is true about Portland that they have a very strong journalism department for local affairs (local being Oregon and Washington state).
You are right they do a good job for local coverage, in some places NPR is probably the only broadcast media that does real journalism. To be fair, some of the journalists I associate with PBS Newshour also report for NPR. Basically, my complaint is the top of the hour news show they have on NPR is awfully shallow.
Frankly, a source that gives me the good stuff from those three in one place without the dross sounds pretty good.
Which is lovely, but I don’t watch news by and large - I’d always rather read.
I get mad daily from the actual news, there’s no value in reading trolls and hacks for the sole purpose of raising my blood pressure even more. If you want to show me a source of actual, good faith discussion from an opposition viewpoint I’ll take a look at it, but let’s not pretend that’s what the Thiessens and Douthats of the world are providing.
Frankly, though, there’s little value in the ones I agree with, too. Opinion pages are pretty much pointless in 2021.
Might want to consider spending a bit less time in P&R then.
Shouldn’t that article go in the Ocean thread rather than the Mainstream thread? Or is it a freshwater eel?

That deserves a pulitzer prize. I laughed so hard my eyes are tearing up.
That headline alone makes me tempted to reactivate my NYT subscription. Good on 'em.
It sorta makes sense… the ‘drug czar’ was supposed to fight drugs, right? Doesn’t sound great, though. I always thought drug czar sounded weird too.

I’ve never liked the czar moniker either (and it’s usually attached to something that’s horrible for society, but at least it’s consistent there) , but an “anti-Semitism czar” is uh… a bridge too far imo.

It’s like these people are deliberately ignoring the fact that “__________ czar” took on a particular meaning in the 90s, entirely divorced from its historical context, just so they can feign outrage. As if there’s any shortage of actual things to be outraged about. This is indistinguishable from Fox News style controversy manufacturing.
Yeah - this seems like a tempest in a teapot - we’re over a century from the pogroms, and its not like anyone liked the Czars. Its just a weird techo-cratic term that just popped up in US government circles, divorced from its historical context - that people use unthinkingly. Even people who should know better.

I took that as a bit of a laugh at something that is indeed a little facepalm worthy. Not so much outrage.
Similar to if someone said “we need a Democracy Czar”. Wouldn’t be quite as dark, but still worth a chuckle or brief snort.
