My thoughts exactly.

Everyone looks cool with a cigarette.

Cigarettes are terrible things, but people look cool when they’re smoking.

I suppose context is everything and maybe explains some of the disconnect here. I walk past people (usually college students) smoking outside and they don’t look good… they look like idiots.

I also don’t think people smoking in real life are sexy at all… just the opposite in fact.

But in movies, TV, or still photography? I mean, c’mon. Obviously.

You know what’s never gonna look cool? Clutching a vape in your fist.

Accurate

I feel like we might not be the internet’s number one arbiters of cool.

People don’t smell good with a cigarette, and smell even worse when they have stale smoke impregnated into every piece of clothing and every possession they own. Guh, now I’m remembering the smell of ashtrays from when I was a kid. They were everywhere, including the doctor’s office.

Yeah but everyone smoked, so we couldn’t smell anything!

Also, I think that they had banned smoking on planes before I ever rode on one… But I kind of can’t even imagine how that worked.

It didn’t.

US domestic airlines started banning smoking on flights in 1988 (IIRC). At first it was only for short flights, but over the next decade or so, that expanded out to the full smoking ban we have today.

I vaguely remember there being smoking on planes from a couple trips when I was a young, but not many. Even when it was allowed, I don’t remember it being super common, but that may be my brain doing revisionist history tricks since it was “just the normal stuff.”

I do remember folks smoking in restaurants and bars and such all the time. It was weird to me for a while when that stopped. Bars especially.

Everyone just kinda accepted that everything always smelled like cigarette smoke. People smoked everywhere all the time, so it wasn’t weird.

I was on submarines when they still allowed smoking. That was a joy.

Teenagers smoke, and they seem pretty on the ball.

After going through a decade of smoking and the nightmare that is kicking a nicotine addiction, no, nobody looks cool with a cigarette. Fuck everything about smoking and vaping and chewing alike.

I got that reference

Oh man. I remember when the smoking sign lit up on a plane, it was nothing but a wave of people firing up cigarettes and puffing. The upper foot or so of the plane’s cabin was just a haze of smoke in minutes. Gross.

It’s trippy watching older movies now with hospital scenes that feature the doctors smoking away while they give someone bad news.

Or period shows like Mad Men or something. I remember as a kid (born in '61) being exposed (thankfully not daily) to second hand smoke and it sucked. My parents didn’t smoke (although my dad had till I was an infant) but any time people were over, the damned ashtrays came out, because it was still not the etiquette to ask people to take it outside.

My dad used to smoke a pipe, and liked to light up in the car when were on trips. Ugh. At least it made sure all the kids would be lifelong non-smokers.

Both my parents were smokers. My dad smoked Camels and my mom smoked Marlboros. I think I grew up in a haze of the stuff.
