That is insane. I have no idea what engineers in the bay area make today as my company has been priced out of that market by big tech for a decade, but 450k!?

Ya figure if top engineering talent gets in a bidding war between Netflix, Facebook, Apple, Google, etc then it’s going to get stupid.

Do yourself a favor and don’t waste time reading that article. My god, the whining of some kid making 450k, who even notes one of his favorite perks was the free food in the office. And then he leaves and somehow negotiated a severance package. Jesus. Poor guy.

One way of looking at Non-Mainstream Media (aka, per the article, pink slime media):

Awash in pink slime

Local Government Information Services is the publisher of lots of local news media in Illinois, with titles like “Southern Illinois News” and “SW Illinois news.” LGIS is part much larger network of local news in multiple states. As local news media has disappeared “pink slime” outlets like LGIS have taken their place, relying on low-cost or automated content repeated across sites, and eschewing basic journalistic practices.

Just how big and how connected these local news outlets is difficult to discern. In 2020, the New York Times counted about 1,200 connected local news outlets that had arisen in just 10 years.

Netflix doesn’t do stock options, just salary, as I understand things. Total comp in that ballpark is not out of line relative to senior engineers in other high end FAANG type places.

I’m skeptical. That’s basically a top 1% household income percentile.

There is quite a range expressed here for Amazon, but the average is way below that.

I believe ReptileHouse is in engineering management at one of those firms, and levels.fyi (much better site for engineering compensation) tends to agree on the total comps:

Amazon is on the lower end of FAANG though, to be fair.

Amazon was using stock options as its big incentive for a long time, but they recently announced they were upping salaries because the stock wasn’t doing so hot.

And being in Seattle probably insulated them a bit from those Bay Area bidding wars.

Ah, okay. Still seems insane, though.

Oh believe me, as someone in the Midwest I completely agree! :)

It will be interesting to see if the rise of remote working brings the tier 1 comp down or just increases the competition.

I’m not in the US and we benchmark against what I would consider the next tier down so I make a good bit less, although still silly money really. I’m not sure I would enjoy either the work or the culture at any of the big boys though. Certainly the prospect of making considerably more money hasn’t been enough to make me seriously think about applying.

What I don’t like is with so much of the comp being RSU based it’s very dependent on manager discretion and very opaque.

It is insane. I am also very well informed on the topic, yes. :)

Granted, and sorry to have been skeptical!

Nothing to apologize for. Skepticism is absolutely warranted! In this particular case, the insane happens to actually be true.

And now, one million “news” specials recounting the impact and aftermath of the Depp/Heard trial.

This will be another 9/11 moment where 20 years later everyone will be able to describe where they were and what they were doing when the verdict was announced.

LOL If true, we deserve to go extinct as a society.

Relevant to the tech salary discussion that just happened here:

I was told, in college, that I could expect $40 an hour and more when I graduated. In IT. Guess what happened?

The truth will astound you!

It’s really the ‘and more’ that sells it.
