I’m glad to see that Mann & Orstein piece get more play because it explains everything you need to know about the Republican party. It explains their behaviors and motivations and it predicts their future actions. The media is having a hard time accepting that one of the two major political parties in this country is an insurgent movement bent on overthrowing our country from within. The media continues to treat them as if they are operating in good faith.
I swear most of the complaints about the NY Times are the awful headlines. Most of the time the NYTimes reporting is good sometimes even great.
A vastly better headline would have China Brain Washes Uighur children against Islam, which not only would have been a better reflection of the Orwellian practices which the brave reporter unearthed but would have been a lot more eye-catching.
The reporter uses words like “assimilate and indoctrinate”, wipe-out, ruthless, mass internment.
Along with some terrifying statistics.
By early 2017, the document said, nearly 40 percent of all middle-school and elementary-school age children in Xinjiang — or about 497,800 students — were boarding in schools.
She reports the government side and then quickly calls it bullshits.
We worry about cultural appropriation in the west, what China is doing is nothing short of cultural extermination.
Amy Qin risked expulsion and even imprisonment in writing this story, she deserves a far more courageous headline.
Here is the link to the story, which has a tad better online headline.
You’re right, they do have awful headlines, but since we live in the TL, DR age that’s all that gets read by a fair chunk of the populous. :(
(Can’t forgive much of their the op-ed page. Or Peter Baker/Maggie Haberman. A pox on their houses I say.)

And their total dedication to corporatist policy, their addiction to bothsiderism, their refusal to state plainly facts, instead relying on ‘so and so claims X, opposing members say Y’.

Exactly this. Their headlines are hot garbage, yes, but my issues with the paper extend to the content of the articles as well.

Civic sparring, that’s rich. Gonna file that one away with phrases like alternative facts and whatnot.

Who hasn’t tried to settle racial differences by strapping a lance to the side of their Honda and flooring it at the local car joust?
Guys, that whole Hutu and Tutsis thing in Rwanda was just a mild disagreement!

A little bit of competitive truncating never hurt anyone.
The quest for euphemism is endless, it seems.

Hustler is mainstream media, right?

That could easily go in the What Could Go Wrong thread, too. I can’t even fathom what they were thinking with that. I mean it’s not funny at all, so it’s not about making a really risque joke.

It’s basically satire against what Trump and his lawyers have directly said. I wouldn’t want that on any of my Christmas cards though.

It’s Hustler, it’s what they do.
Their biggest contribution to American society is saying that Jerry Falwell fucked his mom.
Which, to be fair, ended up being a really big deal.
