Wop really isn’t used anymore in my experience. Just curious if others have heard it used outside of a movie?
Oh yes. I’ve heard WOP used unironically to describe Italian-American people from the East Coast a lot. Usage has dropped since Jersey Shore was a thing, but I see it every now and then.
I’ve had it used on me by people on and off since I was in grade school. Not lately, but yeah. It struck me rather sharply in the thread. Brought up bad memories. I see where Gordon was coming from though and I am happy to just drop it.
A good friend of mine in high school was half Italian, half Polish. I’m ashamed to say we thought we were very clever when we discovered we could combo insults and call him The Woppollack in the ninth grade. The nickname…stuck.

I didn’t know the origins of that term either, so good to know.
I knew this, and I still called my “recipe” of sprinkling malted milk powder on popcorn WHOP-corn.
