Ah, thanks for the bump. Meant to weigh in on the DLC!
So I’ve fully completed single-player Mario + Rabbids now, all the DLC, all the challenges, all on perfect, the lot. The base game is superb (my GOTY 2017) and the Donkey Kong expansion is a great addition, with a few caveats.
Firstly, you can’t switch your characters out; you’re stuck with Rabbid Peach, Donkey Kong and Rabbid Cranky. This wasn’t an issue for me because they synergise in all sorts of interesting ways but I know some were a bit bummed about having to take Mario + a Rabbid in the base game (wtf).
Secondly, the puzzles aren’t quite as varied, mostly block sliding ones, but there are some genuine head-scratchers here which was a welcome surprise.
Thirdly, a couple of the (optional) turn limited challenges were very trial and error or at least so expansive that it took quite a few attempts to get a handle on what to do. I found with the base game Ubisoft struck a good balance but I think they leaned a bit hard into some of these.
Fourthly, I ran into several bugs, a few hard crashes, muted/missing sound during boss fights. Unusual for a console title, let alone Nintendo.
The Donkey Kong expansion very much continues the spirit, charm and humour of Mario + Rabbids which just makes me so happy! The new characters are really interesting mechanically, and sufficiently different to the others to add a fresh twist.
The challenge pack DLC, which adds some Ultra Hard challenges to the secret areas in the base game, was alright. The last challenge I did (the final thing I had left to do ) was absolute horse shit. Like, it wasn’t possible without luck. It was by far the most egregious thing I did in the entire game and I was so tempted to just knock it on the head, but I was this close to fully signing off so I gritted my teeth and did it.
But still, tremendous game. Now to find someone to do co-op and versus with…
