Is Iron Man as powerful as the crowd mind seems to think he is?

I’m in the mood to buy a hero and was thinking of giving him a try.

Thanks for the responses guys. Anyone can add me ingame. I’m always up for games if I’m logged in and playing.
IGN: Hereafter

Claybob, what’s your IGN?

My Iron Man is only in the low 40s, but so far he’s crazy good. I think you’d have fun with him - I certainly have been.

He’s pretty powerful. He pretty much wipes the floor with whatever you throw at him. I find him pretty fun to play (mine is in the mid 50s, fyi).

In other news… I got StarLord to 60 and I enjoyed it. I was reading he’s sort of squishy and I didn’t feel that way until one day when all of a sudden he started taking a lot more damage (maybe in the 40s?). I think that doing a lot of questing with the crowd in Midtown masks your deficiencies to a degree, so that when you go to fight a boss in a private instance you’re often like ‘woah, this is hard!’ I had saved up a bunch of those shared quest yellow boxes and I opened them when he hit 60 - maybe 20 boxes or so. Out of them I got 1 unique, zero cosmics and a bunch of purples. And that was after popping a bunch of rarity buffs! At least you get 3 to 5 Odin Marks out of those boxes, so that gave me enough to buy SL a legendary.

Incidentally, I read that the buff you get from the Elemental Gun tree for StarLord either doesn’t work or only works on the first hit after you apply the buff, so that’s another reason to hate the elemental tree.

I also got Hawkeye to 60 - that was my first toon but when he got to 25 or so I dumped him for other characters. And once a toon hits 50 unless I love them I put them on the shelf and just do a daily quest with them, so for many of my characters, the 50 to 60 path takes a while.

I’ve got Star Lord to 35 so far. I did 1 - 30 just messing around with power choices and experimenting with the air & fire ammo in the Element Gun tree. At 30 I retconned and went with the pretty standard ship & outlaw tree build. The Element Gun seemed ok but damage was kind of low and the ammo mechanic was just annoying. I’m having a much better time with his standard build. I’ve got a M’Kraan on him which is almost at rank 1. I’m rolling with Drax summoned for levelling, which is helping my survivability a bit by drawing lots of enemy attention.

I’ve been levelling Rocket as well (had him at 1 for ages but using the new movie costume as I bought the Rocket/Iron Man costumes + 3 GOTG team ups bundle), which has been an interesting experience! I’ve gone summoning on him, although I had to retcon as I approached 30 as my build was a bit too rag-tag. I’m really looking forward to that power that summons 2 gun turrets instead of one. It’s going to be a long wait until 47, or whenever that unlocks. I’d also like to give him the summoning legendary but I don’t know that I want to spend my last 300 Odin marks right now (having just spent 600 on Star Lord & Wolvie legendaries).

Had a great time with this over the weekend. I finished up the story with Colossus and jumped into midtown and helped tear things up for awhile. I think he’s 31ish now. With my first 175 splinters I got Cyclops. Not being satisfied I broke down and took advantage of the hero bogo. I bought Storm and got Ghost Rider and then picked up the Taskmaster and got Spider Man. Still haven’t started off with any of them yet though since jumping-stomping-shouting down enemies with Colossus is just so much fun.

Colossus is great - definitely my favourite of the three big guys to play (Colossus > Hulk >>> Thing). Storm is fantastic after her rework. I really enjoy her at 60 (not sure what the levelling experience is like though as I only did the final 1/6). I’ve been playing Spider-Man recently as well. I’m to 30 so far and he seems rather good. I gather he is quite the Cosmic Terminals beast at 60.

Star Lord is nuts. Just stay out of the Elemental tree - it’s bugged, boring, micro-heavy, and anemic.

He’s got tons of AOEs, grenades, sustained fire, and a burst of melee damage when he needs it. This guy is a monster.

I bought a M’Krann for StarLord too and I’m at rank 1.5 or so. Hitting rank 1 definitely made things a lot smoother.

I used Cryo Grenade all the way to 60 but when I hit 60 I respecced to use that multi-shot thingy that’s in the lower left of the powers screen (I’m horrible with names). It’s pretty awesome.

I also didn’t learn (until I hit 60) that Starship Uplink has an active ability, which is to bring all of your starship powers off cooldown. So you can fire off strafe, combustion bomb (or whatever it is called!) and the signature, then hit Uplink and do them all over right away. Note to self: read tooltips more closely.

My Star-Lord is only 30 or so, got him in a random box over the weekend. I’ve been using the ammo powers as attacks on their own, they do nice damage. I’m using the air and earth ones along with the Starship Captain powers and Cryo Grenade. Everything has a cooldown, but there are enough powers to keep a steady rotation going. In the long term I’ll probably retcon out of them, but they’ve been great for clearing the story maps.

I know the power you mean - the bullet spraying arc one. Hmmm. I feel like the Cryo grenade sets up his other AOE in trash clearing situations, which is why I’d be hesitant to spec into yet another AOE damage power instead.

And yeah, Uplink can be great for dropping crazy amounts of AOE. I need to bind these two pointless little buttons on my mouse to 1 and 2 to make power bar switching quicker…

Doomsaw updated the new heroes & level 52 tracker thread:

[ul]
[li]Iron Man this week - no major changes expected, but a few relatively small things and actually getting his ultimate and signature (One Off) into the proper levels.
[/li][li]Jean Grey late August.
[/li][li]Cyclops late September.
[/li][li]We are going to try and do Hulk and Thor at the same time and have started on both.
[/li][/ul]

My Iron man was sat at 33 so I’m switching to levelling him up for the next few nights. I don’t like losing access to powers! Plus I want to make the best use of the free respec.

Star-Lord is a lot of fun. I’ve got him at 53 and working on gearing him up. I went with Cosmic Control Rod.

Suppressing Fire looks cool, but requires you to stand still, doesn’t do stellar damage, and he has other aoe options that are phenomenal. I quite like gravity grenade for pulling enemies into Strafe’s path. Close Quarters does crazy damage, but is slightly buggy.

Close Quarters also works against the rest of his playstyle, which annoys me. Wolverine’s sig (similar type of power) works because his basic draws him next to everyone he wants to kill (and you’re almost constantly using his basic). Star Lord is all ranged though, so actually getting next to someone to hit Close Quarters just seems annoying. I think it’ll be the point dump skill for me and I’ll max the other ones I use instead.

Anyone have any advice on what stats I should be looking for on Colossus? I’ve just kind of been cruising along with whatever gear looks good at the time. I haven’t had any issues so far but I know I could be doing a much better job with my gear choices. I’ve mostly been using Demolition Stomp, Titanic Slam and Colossal Roar. With Osmium Punch and Crushing smite to fill in the gaps. A lot of the builds on the forums seem to go all out health and switch out Crushing smite for Colossal Punch. Might try that out tonight now that he’s 34, though I only have one respec potion left and I don’t want to waste it.

I went with this build here but with a few differences:

[ul]
[li]I ignore fissure and go with demo stomp[/li][li]I think I currently max demo stomp and point dump into Titantic Slam as I’ve not got the storyline power points yet. Probably I should sort this out…![/li][li]Don’t bother putting single points into the shields you won’t always run until you have points to spare. So I need to respec to just have 1 point in the blue one.[/li][/ul]
I think I have more health now than that guy’s screenshot shows. It’s a great level 60 build though, I find. Probably not the best for raids but it’s good on cosmics.

I’d advise waiting until you’ve unlocked all the powers you’re going to need before spending the Retcon potion. Colossus feels pretty invulnerable during the mid 30s to mid 50s stretch with any kind of sensible build, so you can safely wait for the last useful powers to unlock.

Thanks Alex. I had already respecced him once in the mid 20’s to get rid of some powers I didn’t like, so its good to know I can just wait till 60. I do still feel powerful which is nice. My son was watching me smash through a mission last night and went back and re-downloaded the game! Now he’s trying to grind out splinters to get someone new.

You want Colossal Punch. A lot of other stuff can be flexible, but you will be gimped without it. Then, stack as much health as you can, which not only gives you survivability, but also increases the damage from CP. One of the punch basics also gets bonus damage from defense. As you head into the 50s, look for artifacts that give you health and melee damage (Advanced Kung Fu Training Sequence and Advanced Crimson Crystal of Cyttorak, e.g.)

Don’t forget that you can get Retcons in each story mode with each character by fighting Bullseye.

Thanks Misguided, great info! I had just bumped up to heroic last night and I forgot that I could go back to the story and get the rewards again on the higher difficulty. Would be good to go and get the skill points and stat increases too.

I have been playing ARPGs since the beginning and Doctor Strange is the most satisfying character to play, ever.

Took me around 4-5 hours to really get the hang of it and even more so to be good at it. But wow, quite an experience.

Anyone else uses this character as a main?
