Mouselock can probably give me some advice here. I’m trying to decide on a main out of the synergy choices I’ve decided on. Will be playing mostly as melee.

Synergy list is here (combination of guys I have and synergies I want while avoiding most characters I have no interest in playing):

Taskmaster
Capt America
Daredevil
Thor
Spider-man
Squirrel Girl
Punisher
Nightcrawler
Black Panther
Deadpool/Hawkeye

Possible choices for my main are pretty much the melee agility guys:

Daredevil
Spider-man
Nightcrawler
Black Panther
Deadpool

I have the most experience with Black Panther having mained him back in beta. He and Deadpool share a characteristic of having a ground aoe that wrecks house though and despite being good solid useful powers, the fact that they kill trash so fast means I rarely feel like I’m actually doing any fighting/martial arts. I really like the teleporting so that makes Nightcrawler appealing though to be honest if I play him I would likely lean towards the sword skills for style reasons despite me usually being a min/max guy.

Well, I’d stick with someone who’s had his level 52 review (so chuck DP). The remaining question is then:

Do I want to pursue a hybrid build, or am I okay with pure melee?

I prefer the melee only playstyle myself, but I will definitely say that being able to have at least a couple of attacks which can do damage at range is nice given the ridiculous amount of ground spam crap in the game. NC is pretty much pure melee, as is DD (to the best of my knowledge; though I haven’t played him since his rework. I got him to 60 before that; need to prestige and give him another whirl but they’re releasing people faster than I can level them!). BP has a ranged build (though I have no idea how worthwhile it is), and Spidey apparently has a pretty decent ranged build.

I feel like, in general, NC and BP are similar (close ranged melee with some nice AoE stuff), though NC’s travel power wins by a mile of course. NC is probably one of the better green/red terminal farmers (if you want cube shards) simply because it’s so easy to get him to the boss in 30 seconds or less. The only place where this is somewhat challenging is AIM because of the maze-like character and having no idea which way you should go. Hydra base is also a bit like this, but the layout there seems to be less likely to mislead me.

However, when it comes to cosmics, while NC does just fine on trash, I feel like he has some issues on bosses, particularly with the recent nerf to X-Slash. It used to do enough damage to make up for having to stand there and get potentially pummeled by the boss, but now it doesn’t do the extraordinary damage any longer, and with my current build, at least, there really isn’t a way to layer on a whole lot more damage.

My Spidey does pretty good at wrecking cosmics, though he tends to vacillate in health while doing so. He’s very mobile (as is NC), but seems a bit tougher than NC (despite being roughly undergeared). I’d worry a lot about DD in cosmics because I don’t think he normally is sporting an avoidance-based movement power (I found, for example, with Emma in cosmics that movement powers that jump over power cosmic or teleport are far, FAR superior to dashes and rolls, because the latter leave you taking damage if you go “through” the ground crap, while the former don’t.)

BP is interesting, because you can generally choose to disengage when you want due to his stealth. You can do this with NC too, but if you have points in BP’s bodyguards you can keep things from resetting (which I always find annoying) when you stealth, and in general it’s far more viable to pop out of stealth, lay down some damage, and then pop back in.

Frankly, I’d get them all up to level 30 at least and then decide who you want to main after that. Better yet, get them all up to 60 and decide. In my world I tend to lose interest after I get a character to 60 and decently geared, and then move on to a new char. That’s what I love about this game, there’s always somebody new to play, and more times than not I find something to enjoy in that play style.

If I play Nightcrawler I would likely be heavy on swords/bleed so I could still stealth and they will keep ticking, I’ve watched some vids of people playing that style and it seems decent enough. I like having a single ranged attack, but want primarily melee. On BP I’ve got the cryo dagger which has been amazing, on spidey I have the aoe web. I just now hit 300 odin marks so I wanted to pick a main so I can get a legendary on them and start levelling it. All of them will be at least to 50 for synergies. BP is 58 right now, DP 60 the rest 20 or under. I’ve heard great things about DD’s rework so not sure how that will end up being. I suppose moonknight is another possibility as well since I own him and like his moveset. Then again Taskmaster has DD’s moves and Capts. arg, here goes crippling number of options again ;)

I will likely get all on my list to 60 then go back and get one geared up and stick with it until a new hero comes along that I MUST play. However I’d still like to have an early main pick for focus

edit: forgot to mention Colossus. I realize he’s as far from agility as you get, but I loved him in beta and have heard he’s an even better powerhouse now.

I haven’t played BP or Spider-Man (though the latter is said to be very good and I’ve thought about picking BP up). Nightcrawler is very gear dependent, very squishy, and they just nerfed the crap out of his best sword skill. In my experience, swords is not a good way to go with him, because if you stand still long enough to hit anything, you crumple like tissue paper. Don’t forget that Deadpool can also teleport (I also happen to love his dash, excellent mobility). And while Deadpool isn’t super resilient, he has a fantastic taunt to draw aggro away, multiple methods to heal himself, and by far the best self-res in the game (as far as I know, all the others have a 10 minute CD, whereas God Mode is a minute and a half).

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend either Deadpool or Daredevil. If you like Deadpool’s style, he’s a no-brainer, really. If you think he’s obnoxious, pick something else. I wish I could advise on BP/Spidey. Nightcrawler would be my last choice, unless what you really want is a challenge. If you’re looking for a character to master, that takes more skill to play, then NC might be the right choice.

Thanks to you and mouselock for the nudge to try out Daredevil. I haven’t played him very much yet, but even right from the get-go he had a better ‘feel’. I still was associating DD with ‘bad character’ because I believe once upon a time he was, but apparently no longer!

Cool, hope you have fun with him.

So, Sue is very, very nice. I’d read about her powers and pictured her as a buffer type character, perhaps acquiescence to the upcoming raids and group utility. While she may have that capability with some of her passives, she’s probably far closer to a rogue in most games I’ve played, with complex interweaving resource management.

I think she’s going to be a bit complex to master, which is pretty cool. It will remain to see how squishy she is and how much damage she can put out, but so far she seems to be pretty powerful. And the visuals on her are just… tremendous.

I really feel like this may be the first game where the F2P actually helps the game in fundamental design space. So many characters, they’re motivated to make them fun and different and interesting because that drives people purchasing, and yet at the same time the more characters they have, the more room they have to make complex ones, are ones with long strings of combos to play, since they can cover other playstyles with another character down the road.

They said the same thing about Strange at C2E2. If this were a traditional game with 5-6 characters, they’d never have been able to make him so complex.

Daredevil feels pretty good. His ranged attack is a bit too good perhaps though ;) It’s like Cyclops’ ricochet

Yes and no. Daredevil’s Rebounding Club is a spirit spender with a cooldown (albeit a short one) whereas Ricochet Blast is a spammable basic (making Cyclops boring as hell to play). If you are doing a combo build for Daredevil, you can use rebounding club every time you use Street Sweeper or a jumping Strike, making an Idol of Khonshu a nice choice for an artifact.

Ho-lee carp. Black Widow is ridiculously good.

I have Hawkeye at 40 and just got Moonknight for free. My biggest issue with the game is lack of inventory. When I got Moonknight, I thought I would have another bag of storage. I didn’t know that it stays the same. I’d rather not shell out cash for storage since I’m such a massive pack rat and alt player. I know I would end up buying tons of regular and personal storage, so I’d rather just not play.

I don’t mind buying other Heroes or costumes, but I’m looking at a huge chunk of change to buy enough inventory to make me happy.

Have they said when infinite retcons expire? I just remembered that in my limited playing time this week I haven’t gotten around to trying out any respecs yet.

Edit: Aha, I see it expires whenever they patch today. Which will almost certainly be before I can play tonight. Oh well, I got 2 or 3 new respec potions this last week anyway, so maybe I’ll just use one of those.

Isn’t she, though? I’ve been playing her a lot over the last couple of days of the event, up to 48 now. Played around a little with her melee in the early levels, but since I’d just finished playing Thing and Wolvie to 60, I wasn’t really feeling more melee. So my Natasha is strictly ranged and throws a lot of grenades, which is awful fun. Explosions galore! She’s equipped with a couple of items that have a chance to create poison clouds and burn enemies on hit, too; stuff just melts when a few dozen grenades go off in the middle of a pack. And I really like the effect on the Twilight Cloaking Device, where the sound volume goes down during the power duration; not only does it sound cool but it lets me know when the duration is up. Knowing how long they last is a problem with a lot of other duration powers.

It continues to be kinda dumb that they have a buff window that doesn’t display buffs from powers, only consumables.

I started her at level 1 in Midtown last night and got to 32 or so. It was tough to stop. My favorite characters have been melee or hybrid in this game so far, but this was without question the most fun I’ve had with a purely ranged character. Of course, I had 5 unique drops, 3 of which were the stilettos (melee tree) and her Raidentech armor (melee) and an any hero (Unstable Carbonadium).

Coup De Grace is phenomenal as a single-target spender. Widow’s Kiss and Rolling grenades shred packs. And Timed Explosive…wow. And I realized that in some ways, the build forming is a bit like I play Deadpool (minus the insanity and lunging everywhere) while being faster/more mana efficient, having far better single-target damage, requiring fewer points (timed explosive starts with a 6 second duration vs Lil’ D having ~2).

The one advantage DP has (aside from God Mode) is his powers aren’t split between physical and energy. I’m thinking of gearing Natasha for unaware target damage with the Skrull Targeting Computers, Shi’ar Cloaking device, etc.

The scary thing is, if you go into the BW forum over at MH, the feedback is largely negative (not outright hostile as with Invisible Woman). I don’t get it. Her kit is amazing so far. She feels FAR stronger than the other characters I’ve played in early levels recently (and I thought Emma was a brute…not to mention she makes Hawkeye feel like he’s shooting spitballs).

Other than her mispronouncing “myriad”, I’ve like Invisible Woman so far.

She’s a bit weak offensively, but I think she will have great group utility for raid content. I love the visual effect around her hands when she is gliding and wished the rest of her effects looked more like that. Resonating wave is amazing.

She’s got ridiculous group utility. Significant spirit regen every 4 s plus all the defensive synergies. However, that’s no excuse for being weak when trying to play by oneself.

It feels like the devs went “Oh, shit, we need raid type gameplay. Quick, give us an interacting character!” But what they need are a nice web of interlocking powers across all characters, and what it feels like is they’ve put them all in IW.

So far I’ve found one build which has reasonable damage. We’ll see if they fix it up with the patch today to help out with that… many of her numbers need a 10-15% bump; but of course if you do that then you risk making her godlike in raids because of all the extra stuff she brings along. sigh Stupid raids.

That’s a concern of mine, actually. I like playing characters with heavy group utility, but having one character be considered a must-have would not be a good thing.
