I don’t even bother posting here anymore about games, movies, or shows that I greatly enjoy because I will inevitably be told how wrong I am.

Internet fist bumps.

I like Mako. At least did not hate it.

Yeah, I think the divide over MEA might be the same divide between Mass Effect 1 fans and Mass Effect 2 fans. (Using fans for lack of a better word here)

As in for a lot of people, Mass Effect 2 is really what they want more of. A much more linear “action game” with cover-shooter arenas and story/choice bits start to finish. The gameplay loop never changes munch. I would actually cite Tom’s Syfy article here comparing Mass Effect 2 with Aplha Protocol because it highlights this well but I think it was deleted from the Internet.

As for Mass Effect 1, well the Mako/planet excursions can be easily criticised for being underdeveloped and filler, but MAE is a noble attempt at building upon the concept and mostly succeeds in terms of having the more open galaxy / planet exploration that had been completely missing from the series ever since.

Wow, good memory. I didn’t remember that. I tracked it down for you.

I don’t think your response was correct but I also think his post was needlessly antagonistic. People have their preferences, and there’s no need to demean anyone because they liked how the Mako handled.

I liked ME1 the best also, mainly because it set up the world so well, and introduced us to a great set of companions, and other interesting characters. Sci-fi RPG’s are few and far between compared to fantasy so this was also a welcome change.

You’re wrong about that.

There is an objective standard for some things. Like Cate Blanchett is a better actor than Britney Spears. When people conflate liking Britney more than Cate with Britney being a better actor than Cate, then I have to disagree.

But internet being what it is, there will be people saying that it is an objective truth that Britney is more likeable than Cate, or it is wrong to like orange more than apple. 🙄 Hopefully I don’t come across as one of those peeps.

I’m fine with people not liking ME:A or ME1, or liking Mark Meer more than Jennifer Hale as Shepard. I always like Tom trolling the fanboys with his reviews. Good heaven he disliked RE8!!!111 🤣 You have your preference and I have mine. Whatever. But if someone says Mark Meer is a better voice actor than Jennifer Hale in ME series, then no, I have to disagree. Or saying Britney is a better actor than Cate. In fact, PISTOLS AT DAWN.

Haha awesome!

The only downside of the Mako is how you always needed to get out at the end of the thrasher fight, and kill it up close and personal to get the correct amount of XP.

Killing something in a Mako only gives you half the XP, and that is something I was not going to stand for.

From #5, regarding Alpha Protocol: “…because there is no attempt at world building.”

Isn’t a lack of world building a BAD thing in an RPG? The way @tomchick describes this and some other points in favor of Alpha Protocol over ME2 makes it seem the former is very “gamey”.

Now, I have no idea because I bought it for the Xbox 360 and only got to play a little bit of it, but from all I’ve read it seems it would be up my alley. Been hoping for an Xbox One BC release, but maybe MS will re-release it later.

I think you just sold me on Andromeda. ME1 was easily the best of the originals, I recall expending quite a lot furious electrons on ME2 when it came out. It’s actually quite a good game, but it’s not the game I wanted it to be, because it’s not like ME1.

That’s cool. I hope you’ll post your impressions in the thread when you do play it.

They removed this difference in the Remaster.

Well, one reason to get the remaster version.

Yeah, I’m taking my completionist self through M1 LE now (and loving it) and this is easily my favorite change (on the Citadel). I always worked very hard to get the killshots out on foot in my original playthroughs. It was so annoying, especially on Insanity.

Alpha Protocol is set in the real world. Missions take place in Russia, Taiwan, etc. There isn’t any real need to world build. The game is set around events. Also it focuses on factions, different agents, handlers, bad guys, mostly people. It’s espionage stuff.

I finished legendary, and that reminded me that mechanics wise, Mass Effect Andromeda was a pretty decent game so I started a playthrough there as well… Reading the last few posts makes me wish I had played Alpha Protocol which sounds like a lot of fun! Alas, poor Fozz you cannot. It is no longer sold because of soundtrack copyright issues =( Andromeda it is! Here I come Voeld…

I remember thinking Andromeda was okay, but somehow missed some element of magic that ME had. But maybe it was just missing Shepard.

I was a completionist on M3 — played all the side missions in the trilogy — but halfway through Andromeda I stopped doing side missions and just went straight down the main story path to finish.

Once I finish the trilogy remaster, though, I’ll go back to Andromeda. Maybe after getting a new taste of ME, and without the Internet whispering to the devil on my left soldier that I’m not enjoying it as much as I’d like to, I’ll want to play more of the missions.
