Has had crazyshines beefs (his twitter feed is just nonstop legal threats and actions over a variety of perceived ills done to him) with the paper and local government in general going back years and years.

Seems fairly likely that the motive here had little or nothing to do with politics, btw. Looks like a guy who harassed a female reporter at the C-G back in 2010 or 2011 was arrested on those charges, and then threatened a reporter and the paper’s publishers and editors repeatedly over the next 5+ years for running a column on that.
Hopefully they’ve checked on the judge he was going after and any paper people that were no longer there.
Yeah, the 5 minutes I spent looking over his tweets (most of which are 2016 and earlier), it’s fairly clear that this is someone who should NOT have been allowed to own any sort of firearm.
His second-to-last last Tweet was in Jan 2016, the last one was 7 hours ago.

What struck me in that article: he wrote the woman he was harassing, “Fuck you, leave me alone.”
Which is the last tweet he sent on twitter, and as you note, that was basically minutes before he went into the building with a gun.
