Meriwether, an indie RPG about the Lewis and Clark Expedition

If there’s any mention in the game of where the Corps of Discovery puts in on the Missouri River, pleasepleaseplease do NOT say they set off from St. Louis.

(Says the proud native of St. Charles, MO…)

Actually one nice thing about being completely outside the loop of this games main themes is that, as evident in triggercut’s post above, i have no idea what that is all about, so this really will make me feel like the brave new world explorer that Meriwether and his ilk typified. I will quite literally be discovering the America’s for the first time, and i can’t wait to try it out. I’ll probably eat something stupid (like an Porcupine, spines and all?) and die of sickness!

Just a little provincialism about my hometown!

St. Charles was the second permanent European settlement west of the Mississippi River in North America, and is old enough to have been under both Spanish (it was originally the village of San Carlos) and French flags before the Louisiana Purchase made it part of the US territories. These days it’s a big exurb/suburb of St. Louis. As such, it sort of gets lumped into being referred to as St. Louis, even when sometimes it’s an important distinction.

And so you’ll read some lazy historical overviews of the Lewis & Clark expedition that will say they put into the river in St. Louis. That’s incorrect. St. Louis lacks any sort of decent portage on the Missouri River, mostly because the Missouri is running fast as hell as it gets close the confluence with the Mississippi. If Lewis & Clark had tried to put in the water in St. Louis–and especially in May of 1804, which is flood season–they’d have never been able to move westward, and would have likely either swamped or ended up washing into the Mississippi and being carried south.

That’s right. After the Kickstarter ends we’ll send out surveys to all the backers, asking for details for all rewards, addresses for physical rewards, etc.

We don’t mention anything like that explicitly, but the level that encompasses that leg begins when they set out from Camp River Dubois (at the confluence of the Wood and the Mississippi Rivers). Players can (and most will) stop over at St. Charles to rest/resupply.

I went to the Lewis and Clark Boathouse in St. Charles a few years ago. It’s really impressive! For those of you who don’t know about it, they have built working reproductions of most of the boats Clark and Lewis used, including their enormous keelboat. And they use them for reenactments.

I’ve been starting to read up on the guy and the expedition (which was some feat!), and i’m happy to see your bid totals have been shooting up Josh, it’s looking very close now with just a few days left. Best of luck.

Looks like this is funded! Congratulations, Josh et al.! I didn’t contribute, but I will definitely buy the game when it’s released. Good luck with the continuing development.

Fantastic news. I’m thrilled to see games like this get backed.

Congratulations on getting funded! (And yes, I backed it immediately after I posted.)

Tom has always encouraged developers to post here in this way, and he was being perfectly transparent. I don’t think it’s an issue, unless he suddenly reveals there’s a kickstarter tier that includes male enhancement products.

That’s why they’re called stretch goals! :)

Congrats, Josh! I backed this a while ago, and am ecstatic to see it get funded.

I’m also a Brit - I know exactly nothing about the Lewis and Clark Expedition, but I love history and RPGs, and a combination of the two is a rare thing. The fact that in this case it’s coupled to an exciting game design is icing on the cake. Plus: exploration, wilderness, big moustaches - all sexy.

Male enhancement products, stretch goals and a poster called Sortasoft.

Ewww…

But congrats, Josh! I have to admit I was a little worried a few days ago, but wow…last three days I think you guys got almost a third of your funding pledged!

Awesome. Looking forward to seeing more.

As for whether War Along the Mohawk runs on current rigs, I have not played in years so I have no idea.

I really hope this makes the stretch goal for Meriwether’s Nightmare. That sounds like a lot of fun in addition to the regular, historical goodness. In a way, it could very historical itself in representing the contemporary worldview. Either way, shooting mastodons should be fun.

Hey congrats to the Meriwether team, and i look forward to dying from eating porcupine :)

Finally got around to making a pledge this morning.

This looks great! Looking forward to playing it to death when it come out.

You know how hard it is to sit anywhere with this stick up my…? nevermind. Obviously, in this case I minded so much I immediately gave them my money [Fry Image]. You are right as well re: Tom’s wishes and the nature of the forum; I guess really in the end it doesn’t matter to the extent it stains Qt3’s special snowflakenesss. I can envision a slippery slope, though, in the age of crowdfunding where it doesn’t always work out so well.

My curmergeonly welcome aside, Congrats! I look forward to exploring the vast West with friends and the blind guy who shoots me on the way back.

Meriwether hit its first stretch goal, so we get Lewis’s outfits and the Girardoni air rifle. That’s good new, but with 15 hours to go, it looks like we won’t be negotiating with Welsh-speaking Indians or shooting giant ground sloths.
