Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Announced

Big name Hollywood voice talents never help sells any game. It’s nice for the box and a press release but nobody cares beyond that. And at this point Hayter is a big name voice talent for MGS so losing him is a much bigger deal than say adding Hugh Jackman. Maybe the Phantom Pain is Snake loss his voice and can no longer talk thus they have no need for Mr. Hayter.

Try again. That tweet is a year old.

First this:

Granted that could refer to some big(-ish) Hollywood dude–Kiefer Sutherland’s name has been thrown around a lot–but then there’s this:

So did Kojima (and Hayter) just troll the fanbase with the “Hayter is out” announcements? Heaven forfend, surely Kojima would never do anything like that…

Simple though; No Hayter – No Snake , at least in English version.
Guess we’ll know soon enough.

Well, it’s Sutherland. Funny how that seems like an anticlimax now. He’s also the voice of the bandaged guy in this trailer, so it seems to be a dual role…OR IS IT?

Kojima did an interview on GTTV tonight and Keighley asked why they recast the role. Kojima’s answer was basically that they wanted someone who could actually act for this game. Can’t really argue with that, if you ask me.

That made me chuckle. I never got what MGS fanboys saw in Snakes voice. I always thought it was kinda dumb. Sounded so fake to me. Kiefer is at least a quality actor.

Acting and voice acting are different skills. You can be good at one without necessarily being good at the other.

I think Kojima wanted to try something out and correctly assessed that the fans loyal enough to be mad about the absence of David Hayter will, by and large, still purchase the game on day one.

I think it’ll be weird, since Sutherland has never lost his Jack Bauer association for me, but time will tell whether I adjust and like him in the role.

In the Konami presentation yesterday, Kojima made a big deal about his intention to confer meaning through tone and facial expression (the studio is using actors to animate faces in the game, similar to LA Noire but with different tech).

So the next Metal Gear Solid will be centered in CTU?

Mary Lynn Rajskub is now playing Otacon.

LET THE LEGEND COME BACK TO LIFE!

I think it looks fun!

MGS5 - now with sexy debate.

I like this part, too.

However, 343 Industries designer David Ellis has taken to Twitter to criticise Kojima for his comments, referring specifically to this picture.

“Don’t care if this gets me in trouble. This character design is disgusting,” Ellis wrote. “Our industry should be better than this. Industry full of man babies. Ugh.

“Eccentricity is a cute cover word for objectification and sexism,” he responded when challenged. “Sexuality can be used for purpose. I actually thought it worked in Bayonetta, for example. This feels lazy and exploitative.”

Yeah, ok.

It is a bit of a funny one because MG has always been INSANE with it’s costume anyway and didn’t Kojima say the whole point of Raiden originally was to appeal to young Asian girls? I think he is pandering to his fan-base as usual however I don’t think a naked woman is interesting design-wise and I really don’t buy that it would interest Cosplayers; being naked isn’t a very challenging costume.

So much drama.

If he wants to pander to his fanbase hire David Hayter back.

The characters always were outlandish but I don’t know this one just annoys me. Maybe there will be a reason why there is a half naked sniper in the game but if he wanted to do “sexy” there are so many other ways they could’ve gone this direction.

Because the game series is all about over the top silliness, the whole thing really doesn’t bother me that much. It’s not like there’s a rape scene… You want an explanation for a sexy sniper? So she’s into exhibition, big deal. No doubt your mass murdering mutant cyber-mercenaries all have a few kinks. You also want an explanation for a guy who is constantly surrounded by a swarm of bees he can direct through sheer rage? Anyway, I’m not saying it’s good that they deliberately insert these silly sex objects into their games, but it’s par for the course, they’ve done it before, and since the game isn’t meant to be taken seriously in the first place, I can think of other things to complain about. Like that goddamn closing cemetery cut-scene in MGS4. That was worse than any number of bimbo shootists.

MGS4, I don’t recall a game ever being made. I vaguely recall a very long movie with that title though.

Pfft. Best game I ever played :)
