Metallica: Sucko City?

What’s up with this? Am I just too old to understand the appeal of this stuff anymore, or do you younger guys think this is a stupid idea, too?

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/030604/law037_1.html

There doesn’t seem to be anywhere that these damned game publishers won’t try to go in search of a buck, no matter how ludicrous. Geez louise.

EDIT: Just realized the subject should have been “Sucko Circus.”

What are they going to call it?

Metallica: we fucked up napster for you, now give us your money!

I always thought that Iron Maiden’s mascot would be great in a game. Here’s to hoping that band still has some artistic integrity.

Iron Maiden’s Ed Hunter.

The contract grants VU Games the worldwide rights to publish and distribute a multi-platform vehicle combat action game featuring music, voice-overs and inspiration from the band

“Metallica: Twisted Heavy Metal We’re Still Hardcore Stop Stealing From Us Or We’ll Sue You Black.”

The Internet culture is really crazy.

Can you imagine a group of kids getting mad at a store owner for yelling at them to stop stealing his stuff?

Metallica takes a vocal stand against the theft of their work and suddenly everyone who had been stealing music gets upset and threatens not to listen to them. Oh no! A bunch of people who previously didn’t pay for our music but still enjoyed it are now going to not pay AND not listen!

In any case, it’s a little early to declare the game DOA, dontcha think? It’s due out in 2005.

He’s actually a hidden skater in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4. No kidding.

Lemme just burst your little excuse bubble: see your corner store? Who buys from it? Everyone in town? Maybe someone from a town over and on an ABSOLUTE outside chance someone from two towns over. See Metallica? Who buys their albums? The entire world.
It’s like putting up an electric fence to keep people from stealing cups full of water from your ocean.
No, the fact that they sell all over the world doesn’t make it right, neither does the fact that they can easily sell out concerts and make millions for three hours work, nor the licencing fees they get, or the fact that Nappster never hurt any CD sales, or the fact that CDs are made for pennies and sold for $14. None of that makes it RIGHT. But it still doesn’t warrant the huge fucking stink they made over losing 37 cents a week.

I’m kinda sick of that attitude myself. You know, I never liked Metallica but if I wanted to have their music and not pay for it I would record it off the radio like I did back in the 80’s with other tunes. If that makes me a thief, then I guess I am. C’mon, Adam - you never recorded any music off the air in the 80’s? Or are you too young a pup to have ever did that? You can tell us you’re really a closet Oingoboingo groupie and used to tape all their shit off the air. :P

It’s their attitude and their greed that disgusted me personally. Their music already did from the first time I heard it.

On the contrary, I’m sure you have vested interest in the perpetuation of the ‘good consumer buy product!’ mindset ;) I think Sierra would be just as bad off as everyone else if the game industry ever went the way of the music industry circa 2k3. Of course, that’ll never happen, what with all the piracy protection built into games. And, since the game industry isn’t corrupt like the music industry (by this I’m refering to the 5 years of price fixing commited by major record companies. They took it hard for that just last year. Oh, and let’s not forget how well they treat the majority of their artists), and it’s chock full of real talent, it deserves all the money it gets.

Seriously, I don’t even consider the illegality of what I’m doing when I download my music these days. Hell, I’ll send the artist $1 in the mail if I manage to download and burn their CD verbatim. And, not surprisingly, they’ll make more from my contribution then they’ll get from their record company for 1 CD sold.

You know what makes me happy? Going to the mall and seeing all the overpriced CD stores having ‘going out of business’ sales. Finding out about a sale at Circuit City where every CD is $10 or less. People won’t put up with this overpriced shit when they can get it for free.

Hey, maybe the record industry will die (one can dream…). Fuckers deserve it. Long overdue.

…not that any of the above justifies all the music I’ve stolen. And, of course, the death of the record industry would be a real downer for the economy, etc. It’s all so beautiful and wrong…

i’m not saying the theft of music is right, and I’m not saying that I’m innocent either, but peer to peer of this decade is analagous to the blank cassette tapes of the 80’s. The industry hated it, but it didn’t put them out of business. I don’t buy music because frankly there isn’t much out there that i consider worth buying anymore, and also because I don’t think music cd’s are a good value. I can get an hour of audio content for $18 when I could get a DVD with 2 hours of audio/visual content + extras for $20? It’s not worth it. If cd’s were under $10 I might buy them. In fact, now that I think about it, the last 5 or so cd’s I bought were all in that price range… from used CD stores, which don’t benefit the RIAA or the artists any more than file swapping.

What ever happened to the industry line that eventually CD’s would be cheaper than cassettes because they were cheaper to produce?

Also, if I decide that I want to hear some obscure song that hasn’t come anywhere near a billboard top 200 chart in 10 years, it is just too difficult to find it in stores to buy it even if I wanted to.

Again, with all of this, I’m not saying that I’m justified in ‘stealing’ music off kazaa, but mostly it comes down to value for my money. I burned a copy of a friend’s warcraft 3 just because blizzard decided to sell it for $60 instead of $50 and I didn’t think it was a good value. I spent the $50 that I was willing to spend on Neverwinter Nights instead.

I recognize that it’s just rationalization, because if I can only afford a pinto and I want a mustang, I cant just swipe the keys to the mustang and take off with it. What can I say, I guess the relative anonymity of the internet brings out the worst in me.

If they can make grand declarations for Doom 3 and other crap which is still years out, they can do it for anything.

To me it’s the attitude from the band, particularly Lars. I mean, this is a guy who bragged about his extensive collection of bootlegs he obtained during his childhood. He is just a greedy bastard and the entire band sold out after the Black Album anyway. It’s pretty sad when they play a medley of their older (and best) material that’s it.

FUCK METALLICA

They must want to cash in on the success of games like Kiss: Psyco Circus.

Close, but the Black Album would be the release when they sold out! When they hooked up with Bob Rock, they sold their heart and souls to the record industry devils!!!

He’s right. Actually, the best albums are the first two anyway. Kill 'em all is raw, sometimes too raw. It gives the band a punk flavor, and the album is full of energy and excitement. Ride the Lightning is just brilliant. They peaked on that one ;).

Gotta disagree. And Justice was the shizz, and while the Black album was certainly their most “commercial-sounding” effort up to that point, it was great in its own right.

I bought St. Anger last night on the way home from the office. It’s sounding pretty ass to me so far. It’s a weird mix of thrash and “nu-metal” that rings like tinnitus in my ears.

Just picked up St. Anger. So far, not sounding so good. Maybe its my crappy car stereo, but it just doesn’t sound very good. The songs I made it through sound like rehashes of bad 80’s thrash.

I encourage bands to experiment/change their style some so that’s why I said after the Black Album is when they sold out. I like some of the songs on the Black Album but feel as a whole it doesn’t come close to their previous records. Personally I feel Master of Puppets is their best effort.
