More than 2,100 Florida voters – many of them black Democrats – could be wrongly barred from voting in November because Tallahassee elections officials included them on a list of felons potentially ineligible to vote, a Herald investigation has found.

A Florida Division of Elections database lists more than 47,000 people the department said may be ineligible to vote because of felony records. The state is directing local elections offices to check the list and scrub felons from voter rolls.

But a Herald review shows that at least 2,119 of those names – including 547 in South Florida – shouldn’t be on the list because their rights to vote were formally restored through the state’s clemency process.

That’s a potentially jarring flaw, critics say, in a state that turned the 2000 presidential election to Gov. Jeb Bush’s brother George on the narrowest of margins – 537 votes.

Somehow I get the idea that restoring Democratic voters to the rolls is not a high priority in FLA. Why doesn’t the DNC do something about this?

Like request UN Observers? Heh.

Here’s the amusing part - they initially refused to turn over the list of people scheduled to be removed from the voting rolls. It took a judge’s decision and a court order to force the state government to make that list public. Hunh. Thousands of voters being disenfranchised, and a republican state government doing everything it can to keep the public from finding out about it. This is the party you’re supporting, folks. Does it sound like these are people who place a high value on Democracy, or an open and fair electoral process?

It seems to me that most Republican supporters do so for narrow selfish reasons. My best friend (in spite of politics) works in the military industrial complex and all he cares about is military spending. Fuck clean air and water for his kids! To hell with the constitution! Who cares about the most corrupt govt. in a 100 years?

quatoria, that is false. Until their is a signed notarized letter stating the republican party in florida is actually trying to block this release, the fact they are blocking the release, does not actually mean they are blocking the release.

And that is how republicans sleep at night. Excuse me, adjust their head and body on a flat surface, to lay, during the night time hours so they are refreshed in the morning, but don’t you dare say they are sleeping.

Chet

Uh, Chet, they don’t actually sleep. Late at night they come out to suck the blood from Walmart employees and other poor folks…

Chet, your constant negative attitude and lies about the other side’s attempts to “hide” their “lies” and “underhanded tactics” only undescores the reality that you don’t have the experience and clear vision that is the necessary for us to win against our enemies (real or imaginary) that surround us in these troubled times that we all live in.

It’s well known that everybody except the hahd-core wicked Neocons hate America.

To whom is this addressed? I’m looking around and the swaths (or even like a small skirmish unit) of Bush voters don’t seem to be here.

I wondered that myself. But you know no leftist circle jerk is complete without imaginary foes.

I guess that means we’re lucky you’re back…

Andrew, first let me say I am outraged with this assertion against the fine republican party. We all know that al-qaida is terrorist for - “the list” to call this collection of names, a list, is just more liberal attempts to whitewash this administration by calling them terrorists.

I am sickened that these liberal scum, by comparing the republican party to al-qaida, they comparing the party of Lincoln to al-qaida, so let us not mince words. They are calling Lincoln a terrorist!

And why was this collection of names assembled? To protect the American public. It is to stop felons from being able to vote. We know each vote in this free country counts, each and every solitary voter holds in his right to vote, the fate of this great land. Do you want Charles Manson deciding the next president? Do you want Charles Manson deciding who picks up your little girl from school!?!?

The democrats do.

So Vote Republican.

Chet

Do you want a Catholic priest picking up your young son after school? Do you want a blond frizzy substitute teacher picking up your 14 year old son during school? Do you?

 Great “discussion” you’re having here, guys.

REBUPLEKANS RAE TEH R3TART3D, D00DZ!!!

Boy, you need to learn how to speell!

SK, if you notice, no one is jumping in here for great points on refuting why this is bad. Maybe you would care to enlighten us?

Chet

So, you’re saying that you, Ben, Lizard, SK, Philomath, CindySue, and the other conservatives on this forum aren’t supporters of the Republican party? You won’t be voting for Bush this year, then? Great news! Glad to hear it. Welcome to the dogpile, liberal comrades!

Chet, if you notice, I’m not commenting on why removing ineligible voters is or isn’t bad, I’m commenting on the repetitive “Republicans are EVIL!” roundabout discussion you’re having. Of course the removal of eligible voters from the voter rolls is bad and needs to be avoided, but isn’t removing legally ineligible voters important too? What needs to happen is that they either a) remove the “felon=loss of voting rights” or b) improve the process of removing ineligible voters.

P.S. It’s been over 24 hours since your last sarcastic “Republicans are COOL!” comment in this thread, you’re overdue.

Don’t play dumb. It doesn’t become you.

The one and only comment I made in this thread dealt solely on the “R’s are EVIL!” one-upmanship. Ans as it happens, I don’t want to see legally eligible voters disenfranchised. So on the issue, I’m in agreement, for once, with MS, but I roll my eyes at the childish jokes. So how is that playing dumb?
