Flying into Turin

Glad you guys like the San Juan shots! And yes Matt, the Anguilla shot was from within the sim, but using the drone cam. I got lucky with some nice clouds in the background!

I took that Anguilla shot while my aircraft was parked; I just used the drone. I had all sorts of trouble using the drone while the TBM was in the air with AP on. Every time I switched to the drone, the TBM would immediately start a 50 degree turn – it cost me rep in OnAir.

Maybe they’ve patched this, because I did NOT get dinged for taking off with one notch of flaps (i.e., set to take off). Also, OnAir used to ding me for not starting the TBM with a beacon, even though I’d turned on the “pulse” light; no ding this time.

Lovely shot of Turin!

Ah, that’s great news! I’ll stop putting full flaps on for takeoffs now.

That’s genius.

Wow, it looks like he has done all sorts of stuff:

While I am pretty sure they didn’t really model it in the sim, if you leave the inert separator off during taxi, take off and landing, you risk sucking stones and similar foreign objects through the air intake directly into your engine.

Right. I do it then because I get annoyed by the warning light and there’s no debris in the sim. It does also affect engine performance in the sim.

For anyone still interested, FSEconomy has re-allowed account creations at this time:
https://www.fseconomy.net/

Once you get the forum site login, post here using the same format to request the -game- account:
https://www.fseconomy.net/forum/new-account

The latter takes a bit (a day or three.) They have caught back up pretty well so jump on this now if you’re interested.

Thanks for the heads up. Will let you guys know when I’m in.

Thanks Skipper!

New account requests coming in thick and fast over there.

Sounds good. Once either of you get the game account, along the top menu bar you’ll see:

Select Groups -> All Groups

Search with CTRL-F for Quarter To Three:

Beside Quarter To Three, for you, will be JOIN button. Click than then either PM me on here or post in this thread with your FSEconomy game name.

Did you buy a G58 too @Skipper? I need to do some flights to help pay for those!

I’ve had that a while that was my first buy. She’s paid for. I tend to have it at big hubs I fly in-out of for cash, right now it’s out of KATL.

We need some additional planes to fly for the new folks. The TBM still has a bit to go before payoff.

Woohoo, I’m in! Account-wise anyway. I installed the client on my desktop, which isn’t patched up in MSFS. I’m thinking of starting out on Japan, now that it’s had its update. Am I going to regret that as far as the QT3 group goes, or does it not matter too much where individual pilots are?

Nope, I don’t think it matters for FSE. You can do one flight in Japan, the next in Nebraska, unless you own a plane – plane ownership does tie you to wherever the plane is.

I don’t think so. We’ve all talked about getting a plane somewhere out in Asia for “reverse time zone,” flying. I think you’re fine there. It means you’ll want to look around for hubs there that have rentals you can fly with, and missions to fly.

If you click on airports, then scroll to the bottom, there is a search. You can search for specific rentable aircraft within a certain distance of an airport.

When you find one with an aircraft you want to fly, check the rental rate, the bonus rate (how much you get charged or paid depending on flying away or toward its home,) then check missions. Green missions (player) usually pay a bit more but black missions can sometimes have really profitable deals. It really varies.

Most of what I saw in Japan appeared to be lower cargo and PAX counts, but the goal is to fly where you want and enjoy yourself. Ferrying a couple of passengers around some beautiful scenery isn’t a loss, in my opinion. It’s fun.

If needed, you can always do a run or three in a large hub in the US if you need a cash infusion.

To those of you I’ll be adding to QT3: that group is for all of us. Cash there is usable if you need it for an aircraft. It also covers fuel-ups for any of the aircraft leased to the group. Until you get your own aircraft, feel free to fly for YOURSELF, but use a group aircraft if you see one open. If/when you want to “put into the group,” after you set up your flight you can select “fly for Quarter To Three.” In that case you’ll take 90% of the profit, and the other 10% will go to QT3’s group account.

Also note: you can be a member of multiple groups. If you’re interested in one with other buddies, or people flying in a specific area, etc, do it. The more to keep you going in MSFS.

I can’t seem to bind any hotkey to “gear up.” I have to click and drag manually, which is a pain while trying to steer the aircraft on takeoff. How do you guys manage this?

Also, does MSFS have a chart somewhere indicating what navaids are represented in the sim? I found a chart for Guadeloupe’s airport that includes an ILS locator, but MSFS doesn’t seem to recognize it.

Yet another question: when flying the TBM, I can use external views with the End key, but I can’t really pan the camera; that affects the aircraft. Likewise, I can use the INSert key, but if I do this, the aircraft’s navigation goes haywire whether or not AP is on. Do you guys have problems with this?

Finally, I’m curious what ISA (int’l standard atmosphere) readout tells me. I see the OAT (outside air temp) at 15C, which is plenty warm, and the ISA at 8C. I understand ISA is a theoretical paramater, a sort of guide to where we are in the atmosphere. What if anything more do I need to know about it?

Both my stick and throttle have it mapped, but also the keyboard:

You’re beyond me on the chart and ISA readouts, bud. Wish I could help. The BEST TIP I can give for drone shots is …

… that’s where the Xbox controller shines. Once you hit the Insert key and go into drone mode, the Xbox controller switches entirely to drone mode. I’m not sure which settings accomplish this but not sure it would be as easy on a normal joystick.

  • Left joystick is on-plane/on-view forward-right-reverse-left.
  • Right joystick is yaw around a center point, so turning.

The combo of those two make it like an FPS game on Xbox. But also:

  • Left trigger goes down in altitude.
  • Right trigger goes up in altitude.
  • Left bumper tilts the view to the left (roll plane.)
  • Right bumper tilts the view to the right (roll plane.)

I know there are a few extra drone options like depth of field, etc. I do not know if those are mapped at all.

From what I can tell, ISA is standard temperature depending on altitude. It’s 15C at sea level and decreases 2C for each 1000’ higher. If your OAT (actual outside air temperature) is significantly hotter than ISA, the air density is lower than standard and the aircraft will “handle” like it’s higher than your altimeter is reading. Rule of thumb is that 10 degrees C “feels” like about 1200’ in altitude.

So if you’re at 10,000’, with ISA -5C, and the OAT is actually 15C, then it’ll feel like 12,400’. I think this mostly matters for takeoff and landing at high altitude airports, i.e. low speed flight where you’re going to struggle to get lift. If it’s a hot day, don’t load your plane down.
