I have too, I wish there were a better search for things like that. I’m sure there is, somewhere.

Picked up the Mooney from the Marketplace as it’s one of the four planes I’ve actually taken the controls of IRL. Really nicely done plane! Weirdly, the autopilot was wandering back and forth, but switching it from NAV to HDG and back to NAV caused it to settle down onto a steady course. I like the combo of steam gauges and a good GPS.

Great idea to pick somewhere in Asia for your FSE adventures. There is so much to see in this game that it’d be great to combine the sightseeing/business models like that.

I love that there’s an aspect to the game where you can go, what’s that on the horizon, and fly over there and see something really neat. There were some large mountains on the horizon yesterday in those Africa shots, and I was thinking, Kilimanjaro? It wasn’t (I will pass it on my current trip though) but I headed over there and was reawrded nonetheless.

If anyone fancies a quick peek at, not only two international airports within half a mile of each other, but also some neat scenery, do a quick take off from HRYG

Just uninstalled the gamepass version and am going through the Steam install. Forgot what it was like…

I picked it up as well and have enjoyed the few flights I’ve taken it on so far. I think it’s based off an initial late 90s model with the added GPS, which makes sense based on the gauges. But I love the pilots side of the dash. Very much an old school flying feel from it.

You can modify this in the Global Settings by changing your UTC offset. For me this is huge as I tend to play in the evenings and don’t always want to fly at night.

Weird glitch with the Mooney – the GPS and avionics stack won’t turn off if you start cold-and-dark from a parking spot. But they’re fine if you start on the runway. Carenado makes good planes, but they need to start using some external testers…

They patched up the 182, though, so I expect they’ll fix the Mooney soon.

@Matt_W, @Pedro, everyone really – what charts do you use when flying outside the US? Navigraph looks great, but it’s a pricy subscription. Skyvector is pretty limited outside the US.

@kallidain Do you think you’ll subscribe to OnAir? I’m really on the fence. I like a lot about it, but I’m not wild about the subscription model. I also worry that I will take it too seriously and forget to enjoy flying for flying’s sake. But the flipside is that it’s cool when there’s something at stake in a flight; it adds tension.

@Pedro when you went over to Steam, did the game remember your achievements, landings, navlog, flight time, etc.? Or are you starting from scratch?

Re: charts - I haven’t graduated to using charts yet, I’m doing 100% vfr

I found ourairports.com useful in Africa; when you hit the expand Button on the map part you get a full size map.

This was useful when I parked up one night and then found the next day that it was at an airstrip that is not marked in the flight sim map :)

Re: Steam - I didn’t do much as it took 2 hours to install, but it did ask me to log into my MS account and that’s the user name that is displayed within flight sim so I guess the achievements are still there and poppable on the MS side. It did not auto update the steam achievements which are all still blank

Will report back on flight times, navlogs etc tomorrow

Ah, I should explain that I have a pretty limited understanding of vfr, and in my mind it was navigating via rivers, roads and mountains. Kind of orienteering via flight. Maybe some day I will graduate to the proper charts, sorry :)

I’ve found SkyVector works just about everywhere I’ve flown. If I can’t find an airport plate on there, I just google it.

Hey don’t be sorry, that’s true VFR and quite a bit of bush flying too. VOR navigation would be a good step up when you get to that point, but GPS flying is easy and it’s there so … why not use it.

Skyvector is great for VFR and IFR enroute charts. Mostly I like flying VFR, so you’re right, Skvector is superb for that – and free!

But outside the US, Skkyvector does never seem to provide approach plates, airport diagrams, or other useful info on instrument procedures. If I want to fly an instrument approach into London Heathrow or Hong Kong, I’m not sure how to find the relevant waypoints, ILS localizer frequency, course, missed-approach instructions, etc. This stuff isn’t that crucial to me, but occasionally I like trying to fly into an airport in bad weather.

I definitely will and am looking forward to getting there; there’s just so much to do from a sightseeing viewpoint first.

I’ve been doing Squirrel’s tutorials to get the flight basics down, but have stopped short of the autopilot one for the moment so I can enjoy the touristy stuff for a while.

I don’t blame you at all, seems every play session I’m amazed at something new I’m seeing or doing.

This has become my favorite thread on Qt3, love seeing all the great screenshots and hearing the stories about your adventures in the (virtual) sky. Making it very hard to focus on studying for my quarterly EP sims!

Hey, good luck!

Reddit, summarizing the predicament:

Finished up some assignments for the group flying from Bremerton to Port Townsend and from there to Duncan, BC on Vancouver Island. I broke down and got Deluxe so I could fly the steam gauge Cessna, which I enjoyed quite a bit.

Tried making a gif

I like the moon in this shot

So the trees are a little weird on the ground here. Just ignore that.

Gorgeous shots, Matt. How did you say you’re capturing video? Nvidia Shadowplay?

Also, is that snow on the ground already in Vancouver Island?

Nope I’m just using the Win+G key and capturing using Microsoft’s built in game bar. Then editing in Windows Movie Maker and using Giphy to gifify

I think that’s just sand on the ground, though you can add snow to anywhere you want if you’re not running Live.

A guy developing a Bush Pilot mod/metagame on Reddit:

"Hello there,

I’m developing a mod for MFS 2020 : NeoFly

This mod use Simconnect.

You play as a freelance bush pilot who takes missions from a company: NeoFly.

Features:

Eight kinds of missions: cargo, passengers, VIP (don’t shake them), emergency (land the medic in a random landing zone) illicit delivery (drop “pizza” above a drop zone), secret passenger (night flight), fragile cargo (land smoothly) as well as express delivery (with a short deadline).
Radio text & audio messages from the dispatch following you during the mission
Sound effects (passengers boarding, cargo loading)
Career mode
Flight tracking on the map
Qualification system (you can use the aircraft you want as long as it matches the type requested (single prop, multi turboprop, etc.)
Free!
Before I let you download the first version, I need a few volunteers to test it and get feedback on the gameplay. Just to find out if it sucks or if it’s worth continuing. I played it so much to test that I don’t even know if it is good or bad…

I will send a dropbox link to the first 10 that give me their email by private message.

Hope you’ll like it

Fly safe."
