That sounds pretty interesting!

@Matt_W, wonderful pictures! Now you’ve got me tempted to buy the steam-cockpit 172. These glass cockpits are hard to see, and I find myself leaning forward and straining my neck when I fly them. When I fly the C152, I sit back and relax.

@Skipper Holy cow, I might sign up for that beta. That’s the just sort of thing I would love, as I prefer bush flying to jets and autopilots. Thanks for the link!

I have lots of eye candy to share, but here’s just one – flying west out of Waimea field on the Big Island of Hawaii, into the setting sun.

I’ve been flying out of Nashville as a hub of late and have flown over what I called the, ā€œDragon River,ā€ many times. It’s really cool to see from above. What I did not know is that it’s a lake, Old Hickory Lake.

Love that last sunset shot (and the others too.) @Spock, you’re making me want to fly around HI for a bit. I’ve spent a bunch of time on the Big Island and Kauai.

Here’s me trying out the Longitude in Japan, fighting a 60 kt headwind the whole flight.

…and after a 2 hour flight, I ran out of gas within sight of the runway and put the jet into the drink :(

Yikes! I tried a flight earlier and went through a bit of fuel as well. They seem great for cargo though and fast hauling. But a huge gas tank and a big sipper seem … like a bad combo.

Nope. Logbook is empty apart from one partial flight I did on Steam once it installed. Profile is at 0 hours flying. The Breckenridge-Mariposa bush flights, which I was halfway through, are reset to Leg 1.

Basically everything in the ā€˜Profile’ section is reset, including achievements, training flights, challenges etc.

That’s a bit of a shame, especially as you still use your MS account/profile. I guess they must be tied to game/save files on the other install?

Sorry to hear that. @vyshka also mentioned that he might buy on Steam. I suppose it would be nice to have the game in my Steam library, but I’d be disappointed to lose my profile, logbook, and bush flights. If I don’t let myself forget my Microsoft ID/password, I should be okay just buying directly from MS, yes?

Way upthread someone mentioned that currently VR headsets work like a Track IR, as in still 2D but a head tracking view. Has anyone confirmed that that is the case? Is anyone using a rift or another headset and how well does it work?

I’ve always found with flight sims that have their own in-game marketplaces, it’s better to buy from the publisher than Steam. DCS and IL-2 are that way, and you get updates quicker, the publisher gets more $ incentive to make flight sims, and so on. Might not be as much the case with MSFS, but I’m in the habit. :) It feels lke it’s harder to find folders, etc. for the Steam version. (Though God help anyone who accepts the default folder for the data download on either version instead of putting it somewhere sensible like D:\FlightSim.)

I tried this with the Rift S and Virtual Desktop. It’s kind of like a 2D VR experience. The head tracking is nice, but there’s more lag than true VR. It was fun to play with once, but I never felt the desire to go back to using it that way.

The phone head tracker’s a better option, IMHO, until we get true VR.

TrackIR it is then, for now at least. This is pushing my monitor upgrade decision in the widescreen direction.

Man, I can’t wait to crash into my house.

Anyone wanting the physical copies and wants to save a few bucks …

I assume so. I bought State of Decay 2 via the MS store way back, and then played it again via game pass when I got that. Everything was integrated in that case, my save games were there etc. So I assume it works the other way too, especially as you’re given the choice to buy games you’re playing on game pass when they leave/if you want to own them.

Those are digital SKU, just a heads-up. The disc versions aren’t being sold in North America.

Looks like the promotion pricing also went away. It was linked on reddit and all three versions had a discount. Oh well.

I’ve noticed a memory leak in MSFS. I’ve had it happen twice so the second time I confirmed it was within MSFS using process explorer. I can’t tell what is driving it though, it doesn’t happen every time I play. I monitor my memory on my Stream Deck so I can see it when it does happen. I’ll go from about 14% at game load up to maybe 30% normally. When this happens it will spike, usually within a flight, and my memory use will peak well over 75% use and I have 64GB of memory. Pretty insane. When it gets that high the game slows to an absolute crawl and anything you’re trying to do isn’t going to happen. I need to figure out what is causing it so I can submit a bug on their forum tracker for it.

Might be due to downloading and installing updates? I noticed when I downloaded all the premium stuff from the content manager that my memory use was up at 100% sometimes and computer unresponsive maybe due to decompression running?

When I’m in flight though? I’m doing a rental return from Kansas City back down to North Carolina. The flight started fine but about halfway through I watched the memory slowly climb and continue to do so. Fortunately I landed at an airport and saved my state, but I couldn’t even exit out of the game it was so jerky by that point.

I don’t think it’s updates, because I had the same thing happen on a short flight from Seal Beach to Burbank a few days ago. As I came into the valley around Burbank, the frame rate dropped to 10-12 fps and stayed that way until I quit the sim.

The next day I flew out of BUR just to make sure it wasn’t an issue with the OrbX scenery and I was getting the normal 40-ish FPS.

Didn’t check memory usage, but sounds like the same scenario.

Had that happen as well. Only once, tho, and it was the second flight I took after starting the program. So start up, flight plan, fly, go back to menu, set up another flight plan, fly - everything went to a crawl about half way through. And they weren’t super long flights on the A320 (ORD->BOS->CLT).

Since then, I’ve always exited the program between flights, and I haven’t seen it since.

I will say - don’t fly to St. Thomas or, possibly, San Juan. The weather radio is on the same frequency as approach - even with Co-Pilot handing the radio turned on, I could never respond to the ILS pattern entry, and they just cancelled it. On the flight out, I had to sit and listen to the weather over and over again on the departure frequency (assume it’s the same).

Ugh.

I had my sim rate up both times it happened. Could be related. It was different aircraft, different flights, etc. Now that I know what to look for I’ll land/save, restart. I’ve literally had the game running for like 18 hours before without issue, so whatever it is seems rare.

I take my dogs walking outside and the one time I don’t have my phone on me, 4 low flying aircraft go over in formation. Three looked like Cub Cadets, the fourth was small and similar and may have been but it was hard to tell. And strangely they were flying in finger four formation. I’ve never seen that around here and have no idea what that was about.
