I was looking over the pictures of the legs on the start screen and there were definitely a few where I was thinking “how am I going to spot that?!”.

I was trying to stop gamepass from renewing, and apparently cancelled my subscription starting immediately. So the move to the steam version starts today. Now for 100GB to download.

Maiden flight. Just a short hop to Albequerque

(Note: Active pause to take that last photo of course screwed me, dropped my speed while paused and dumped my nose into the tarmac, crushing my landing gear. Re-flying now :P)

OK got that sorted. On my way to North Dakota now

Crosswinds!

It’s interesting that the drone default position is 180° behind your direction of travel, not right behind the aircraft’s tail.

Descending from the clouds near the destination. Look at the icing!

On downwind VFR approach.

Well ya see I was there with a couple of guys in a beat up RV. They sold me the plane for like nothing so, yeah.

Bought it as the cheapest TBM I’ve seen in a while, and it had zero hours. It’s hot, probably stolen. Ignore the home base, get it out of there before the cops show up.

TBM’s available for whoever wants it, in the spooky cornfields of Westhope, ND. There’s even a $12k corporate charter that leaves from there for the Washington Cascades. Flies like a dream.

I donated my $18k flight fee to the group. Thanks for picking it up @Skipper!

Holy cow, the group has its own TBM? Did you pay for it free and clear, @Skipper, or is it leased?

I’ll take it for a FSE spin sometime this weekend. I’m happy to donate some or all of my flight fee to the group; I can’t remember what if any arrangement we agreed on. Also, when one flies a group aircraft, does one still have to pay “rent” to the group?

In OnAir news, I’ve been having lots of fun making short hops in Hawaii and then handing things off to a freelance pilot for longer hauls. Today I carried two passengers and 350-odd pounds of cargo from Maui to the Big Island, and I had barely enough fuel to make it. I discovered that you get a .50% rep hit for not having enough spare fuel to make it to your alternate destination.

Also, both my Hawaii flights today featured 20-knot crosswinds at landing, which was really fun, and amazingly, I found the runway in both cases after crabwise approaches. Yesterday, when it was calm, I missed a wide runway by 10 feet because I was sloppy trying to line up on short final, and then I overcompensated over the threshhold – terrible!

I guess some people get a bug with weather reverting to 225/3 after the first flight, but OnAir encourages me just to keep the same “flight” going; I shut down the engines and offload cargo, then start up for a new flight without going back to the main menu. So I had two flights with crosswind takeoffs and landings. Really fun.

This is me waiting to catch the VOR radial leading me into Maui’s Kahalui airport, which sits between the two volcanoes. I could’ve flown a completely visual approach, but I wanted to practice using the ILS approach.

Looks like it’s owned by Capital Aircraft Financing, so seems to be lease-to-own.

I think if you take a group job, the group gets 10%. But there’s no requirement to do that. The group jobs are listed in the group assignments screen.

Yes, but all of the aircraft leased to the group cost $0 to rent. So you can fly them for free.

Nice shot :) I really need to get out to the islands to fly. I spent a bunch of time there in Microsoft Flight; it’s time to go back.

Let’s not talk about where it came from, let’s talk about getting it out of there guys. Come on, there are some bad folks back there, get it out of there.

Does it smell like meth of am I imagining that? Someone get it out of the Dakotas, way too many Feds up there.

Maybe I’ll take it to Los Vegas. There’s no crime there.

So I went a little nuts recently with the hardware upgrades. My 3080 based machine arrived the other day, prompting me to finally purchase MSFS. Today the extra pixels I ordered at the same time as my whining space heater arrived. I them out for a sunset flight over the SF bay.

We might have a new king of screenshots in this thread.

I barely made it under the upload limit.

That looks amazing @Thrag

Wow, @Thrag!

I’ve been telling myself to pay no attention to those shiny new graphics cards! But your photo illustrates what a difference they can make – and I say this as one who adores the graphics I’m getting with my lowly GTX980. Please post more!

Edit: In particular, I’d love to see a screenshot of a glass cockpit (e.g., TBM or C172 glass cockpits), to see whether your setup makes it easier to see the numbers without zooming in close.

I went ahead and subscribed to OnAir for a few months. I’d really like to try FSEconomy but no idea when I will be able to register.

Has anyone tried to land only to have ATC repeatedly tell them to go around? I was told to go around three times this morning landing at KBLI…I ignored it the 3rd time.

Doing my OnAir single engine turboprop check-ride

I passed, but a couple of pointers:

  • I realized once I entered the sim, that though I’ve flown this aircraft a dozen times on long flights, I’ve never started it up. Took me quite awhile to figure out how to do that, but it was pretty instructive.
  • Controlling feathering on the throttle with the mouse sucks, but I’m not sure if the keybindings will work. It’s really hard to switch back and forth between the torque and feather sections of the throttle control.
  • You have to turn your landing lights off before passing above FL120 and then back on when coming down through FL100.
  • You’ll have to land at the same airport you take off from. Try not to pick a dinky runway like I did.

I’ve got to lean in for the smaller text, like seeing the actual number on the rate of climb/descent thing, but the heading, speed, etc. are sharp and readable at the default cockpit camera distance.

The screenshots I took are too large to post and the freeimage sharing sites seems to scale them down too. Still looking for a good way to post them.

I can also confirm that smoke is not included in the real time weather. It’s very smoky in Reno today but in FS there are clear skies.

Another QT3 PIREP:

The guys seemed shady but they offered me good money. Take six of them out of North Dakota over to Washington state somewhere. Who cared where, I was tired of Knoephla soup at the diner in Minot. Time to earn some pay.

With six of them onboard it looks like I’d have to make one fuel stop, blindly pointing my finger somewhere halfway put me on Libby, Montana. Then on to Skykomish, wherever that was. Money is money. With the passengers boarded, it was time to head out.

North Dakota is endless fields of flat farmland, as far as you can see in any direction:

Going into Eastern Montana was similar but not too far in the scenery changed a bit and Libby was nestled just short of the major mountain range in a quiet little valley.

While we waiting on refueling, the guys in the back wandered off behind one of the small hangar buildings. When they returned and we reboarded, the distinct smell of marijuana lingered. It seems the guys in the back were at least gonna have their fun.

Climbing back out was a bit of a tense moment. That mountain range was no joke:

But just like that, up and over the mountains and we were in Idaho:

And just like that again and we were in Washington:

Skykomish proved to be in a small mountain valley with a dirt and scrub grass strip leading right up to some ranch, which I assumed the guys in the back had business at. Maybe some executive hunting trip. Who knows.

All I know is I could put a payment in on what I owed on the bird. A ways to go, but I’ll get there.

This was playing in my head while reading that.
