All I want from minecraft is more block types and more things to build with them. I want to be able to make all the things in minecraft that you can in dwarf fortress. I also want the geology of the world to make some sense as it does in dwarf fortress. Then Ill explore and explore and then explore some more.

You’re right, it’s not circumventing mechanics. What I was getting at is just because you can do something to “win” doesn’t mean you should. In a world full of gaming experiences that are hand crafted to give you exactly what the developers intended, Minecraft is a breath of fresh air as the amount of gameplay you get from it is a reflection of your own creativity and ambition.

And there’s quite a difference between a hole and a stone wall. Enemies “sense” you in this game regardless of sight. A hole in the ground is bad because: 1) you don’t know if it’s daylight yet and 2) enemies will coalesce above you, making digging yourself out extremely dangerous because even if you dig sideways first, the enemies will “know” where you are and follow.

So yes, there’s a very real gameplay implication of building yourself a haven with a doorway and windows compared to just digging a hole.

It would be nice to have some NPCs to mess with. Nothing too complicated, it would just be really nice to see buildings populated and a little more alive than they are now.

Woot!

Hello all, I’m R-T-B, skilled java developer and owner of a minecraft hosting service.

One of my clients on one of my servers I host has hired me to port this mod to the latest minecraft. As per his wishes, the final product will be made public. I’ll make a new thread when it’s done, most likely sometime today.

That said, he does not plan to hire me for any updates, and I do not plan to continue to port this every release as it’s quite an intensive process. He suggested I ask for donations here. I charge about $50 per port (actually more but for the community I’m willing to help to a reasonable extent). If you the community want to see this product updated, I suggest you donate a little cash, a little bit goes a long ways. :)

Donate here via paypal:

Oh, and if anyone is suspicious of my request, all I have to say is wait until I release the update at the end of the day to donate, then you’ll know it’s for real. :D

  • Cake
  • AND MOAR, probably. I forget!

Bugfixes:

  • Paintings work in multiplayer

  • Falling sand behaves better in SMP
  • Fixed a few crash on load level bugs

Anyone know what the useful secret stuff is?

Spiders climbing walls changes a good deal. No more open air evenings. No they need to make a vertical door.

Need to find out if blocks spaced evenly out from the edge is sufficient to block their ascent.

From the wiki:

As of the Beta 1.2 update, spiders can climb vertical walls. One way of dealing with this is to create a skirt around the edge of walls, because spiders cannot cling to ceilings. Another way is to make sure the roof is accessible through only a 1x1 hole that spiders cannot drop through.

They can’t climb upside down? Damn. I don’t see much of a purpose to them climbing walls then.

A creature that could get around any and every sort of fortification would be ace. Glass would suddenly become much more valuable.

Poor spiders, they just want a hug.

Uh… i don’t think you are using the word “anything” with its correct meaning.
Minecraf’t systems aren’t enough complete and full featured as needed to be “anything”.

In my ideal dreams of what Minecraft should be, the game should have some npc system with basic needs. Nothing complex, but enough to give you a reason to build houses, defenses, and get resources.
And more monsters with different abilities to surpass different types of terrain (climbing monsters like the new spider, flying monsters, burrowing monsters which can traverse soft materials, a big monster which can break stuff) so making a refuge against them wouldn’t be so trivial as it is now. Of course this should be balanced, monsters like that couldn’t be in the world from day 1, when you are still weak and resource-less.

Your imagination puts the limit, not the game.

Of course, the game may help a bit more than it does now.

But is somewhat like novels. There are things that you can put on a novel, like a map, that enhance the imagination, but if you put too much stuff, like draws of the characters, then is detrimental for imagination.

Should i play the game and then imagine it’s totally different? Why play Minecraft? I can play Pacman and imagine it’s really Minecraft 2. Ha, suckers! you are playing the beta and i am already playing the sequel!

PD: The third level was really tight and i never guessed the twist about the origin of creepers. I think it’s going to end in a cliffhanger for the third part!

Why not?, is called role playing.

Why play Minecraft? I can play Pacman and imagine it’s really Minecraft 2.

Pacman is not a sandbox. But you can “invent” a pacman gamemode for minecraft… you can dig a maze with almost not lights, and put 1 diamond on every tile, glass on the ceiling, and let people enter there. Maybe do it as admin, and /spawm some Slimes.

Hmm, I think you butchered that sentence. You meant to tell Tei that he doesn’t use any word with its correct meaning, right? :P

Hey, the important thing here is not Minecraft itself or my poor english skills but how much crazy is Teiman. :P

Most ideas that I comment here are not new, or specially interesting. I have not invented the idea of “role play”, or the concept that imagination has power, or the idea that people imagine things that are not there when play with toys. These are very normal ideas, usually you can see people talking about then daily on TV.
Of course, a sandbox is where you have to apply these ideas. Sand itself is not fun, is only fun when you pretend some particular configuration of the sand is a castle, when the fun begins.

The apocalypse will not come in the form of fire, or pestilence, or famine. No, the end of the world will be heralded by a mighty clucking.

:-O

Was that really necessary?
