Eclipse is an abomination before the eyes of our holy father Knuth.
Huh, chunks are only 16x16 horizontal. I expected them to be really large.
…aaaand I wasn’t paying close enough attention and fell into a one-deep hole in front of me onto lava, and lost all my shit. Which wouldn’t be a big deal, except I was wearing the all-diamond armor. Oh well, easy come easy go.
Diamond armor seems kind of pointless; it can take a bunch of hits unlike iron, but really it just reduces how frequently you have to replace it and heal up.

Every time I think about making a suit of diamond or even iron armor, I remember that the only thing that ever kills me anymore is lava. So leather it is.

All armor protects just as well as the other. It’s the durability that is different.
And it looks like I was wrong, ores are generated after the “worms” tunnel through the earth to create caves.
The conclusion is still that clumping doesn’t really happen, I think.
I actually find leather way the hell harder to pile up than iron.
Oooh, a size 6 diamond deposit! That eases the pain a bit.
Edit: a size 8 one? Wow.

MCP don’t force to use Eclipse or any other IDE. I have use the MCP with a simple text editor.
To compile, run and generate ofuscated files you uses bat files, that can be invoqued directly. So theres not need of a IDE.

I’m actually surprised that mods like Mo’ Creatures and uh the various economy ones don’t get more love. They look fantastic. What’s the downside?

Those mods sometimes take a couple days to get updated after being used, though it’s not really an issue anymore if you use the new loader and don’t update.
Also, no multiplayer capability for that sort of heavy modding yet, though I’m sure it’s being worked on.

Well you’re not going to find many cows down in your branch mine. :-)
I built an animal trap for collecting leather, so there’s not much effort involved. I’m such a miser that I’m reluctant to use non-renewable resources.

I am not active in the minecraft community, so I don’t know how much attention these mods gets.
I think mods always get limited attention, since only a small fraction of all the players install mods. Since minecraft make modding harder, is probably even less.
A big fraction of the playerbase use mods, since play on servers that have mods installed. But the ecology of server mods is different than the ecology of singleplayer mods. Apparently, servers normally use a collection of mods (~5), but getting then to work together without conflicts is more a art than science.
Now that the base game include betterlight, theres even less reasons to mod your singleplayer game.
Ok, so in my new mine I’ve dug down and started my main horizontal line to have the highest blocks of bedrock as my floor level. Will this be a good level to start branching out with my mine shafts or should I actually be a few blocks higher up? I’ve only managed to find three diamond blocks so far and that was on my way down.
Depends on if you like dealing with lava or not. Since we see that diamond is preempted by everything else save lapis, you may want to mine above the lava pools as it’s less crowded as well as less hazardous.
But then another reason to try a mod comes along.

Move up a few levels, that way you’ll get ore uncovered on all four sides.
Shellfishguy, I’ve had good results using 11 as the floor. The top bits of bedrock are at 5.
Yeah, I haven’t got around to farming wheat or mobs yet. I’m almost to a 64 diamond stockpile, I’ll treat that as a hint to stop digging.

Wow, someone actually did it.
Thanks all, I’ll start a second shaft a little higher up and see how that one pays off. I should be able to easily build it off of the base camp I set up (crafting tables storage etc).
And coincidentally enough, Notch just started a series of posts about terrain generation.
first portal, now counter-strike comes to minecraft.
Just imagine if that worked on SMP.

And even more coincidentally, a programmer at Introversion blogged his own attempt at a crude voxel/blocky/minecraft engine, this time with some physics tossed in.
