Yeah nevermind a revamp of the water system, how about just fixes some of it’s quirks.

Whoops, I wrote that in the wrong tense. The pool was all wigged out but we did fix it by leveling out the bottom of the pool and then doing that ‘pour water into the uneven/flowing part’ thing to get the pool calm and flat. I’d never seen a body of water where the water was flowing in so many different directions at once, though. I should have made an animated gif of it.

I’d like to see the physics applied more consistently and to do away with the rocks/trees, etc. hanging in midair with no visible means of support (like how sand and gravel is handled now). I could see that getting messy but it’s still a direction I’d like the game to go in.

Also, colored blocks. Not just wool, but stone. Silly? Maybe, but if I want blood red roads, let me make them, darn it!

This would be nice - I was a little surprised when the ‘dyes’ were just for wool and not paint that could be used to coat/tint any block.

It also seems strange to me that there are only half-blocks and stairs in certain materials.

Actually I think the issue is depending on how deep you’re elevator goes, you may die with it. :)

As I have it set up now, I have 3 air bubbles left when I get to the first upward station. I might have to make a few more in between stations depending on the adjustment to rising speed.

How exactly did water elevators work? The only ones I’m aware of are standing in a waterfall and holding jump until you get to the top. I always hated them though because they were so agonizingly slow. Was there a faster way?

use a boat in said waterfall, make sure the waterfall is at least 4x4.

Coming up: a “sky dimension”. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/05/19/notch-working-on-minecraft-sky-dimension

Pretty substantial changes:

Nether is being added to MP too!

That is a TON of bug fixing.

  • Fixed pigs getting hit by lightning in multiplayer spawning client-side zombie pigmen

That’s fucking hilarious and I wish I had seen that in action.

  • Fixed animals only spawning near light during the night

That was supremely annoying, it’s like every animal that the chunk wanted to spawn got spawned near your torches right outside your house. The sheep were keeping me up at night!

The bug fixes are nice, but I could care less about another dimension to explore. I want far more stuff to find and build. Just spend one of your big update periods copying industrial mine craft and then expanding it with 100s of machines instead of adding a new tamable animal, weather, or a new dimension.

IndustrialCraft is insane though. That thing is full of way too much stuff. It’s just a confusing mess of junk that litters up everything. I’d love to see machines get added soon but something more simplistic. Perhaps some kind of machine crafting table that accepts parts (engines, wheels, belts, etc) to let you custom build contraptions that actually do something useful. Vehicle crafting like this would be even more amazing. I still love the Airplanes mod for this reason, as it opens up the world in a whole new way once you’re flying around.

Ah, damn. That was my lazy way of collecting wool.

I have an old world, it was made during the alpha stages. I explored a large area of the world. I want to cut out a section of the world to use (well delete everything but this one area) and let the game re-generate the world using the new generation systems (pumpkins, biomes, new trees, etc…). Is there some tool someone can point me to that will let me do this?

I don’t think so, but you can do this by deleting the regions carefully – they are labeled by coordinates, so r.0.0.mcr should be roughly where your spawn is, r.1.0.mcr is north of your spawn, r.0.-1.mcr is west of your spawn, etc, etc. You should be able to carefully trim those by just deleting the regions you don’t want anymore (I did this on my minecraft server after a friend got lost and doubled the size of the map overnight). Make a backup before you start trimming and just run a cartography program after you make your cuts to make sure you’re cutting out what you want.

MCEdit should let you do what you want, specifically the ‘Prune’ option in the chunk tool. You might still have mismatched boundaries between the area you keep and the areas it regenerates, though, if the world is old enough.

MCEdit only works with the old version of the world files, I think. At least, it did when I wanted to do my trimming.

I just installed mcedit for the first time to plop a giant castle schematic into a world for my kid and had no issues trimming excess scenery. Of course I didn’t try removing entire areas, just smoothing out the site I wanted to put the castle on.

Isn’t there supposed to be a minecraft update today? I may have to wait a few days for the tools / mods to be updated then.

My world was converted to the new format at some point in the past, so it should be ok. I hope the boundaries will not be radically different, but I do expect some disruption. If it is radically different, I ll be disappointed.

1.6 is supposed to drop today or tomorrow.

Edit: Notch just said on twitter tomorrow morning.
