Do you have any mods or anything? That could be the problem.

Yeah, sorry, it’s a Terraria event where Zombies can kick your doors down. Minecraft needs something more threatening once you’re all built up. Either an event like Blood moon or even a rare mob that can burrow, smash walls, etc.

If it has to be a toggle, fine. I know there are people that wouldn’t want their stuff to get busted up…

There’s a monster like that in Mo’ Creatures, the ogre, and a lot of people really dislike it because it will indeed completely wreck your stuff in huge swathes.

Nope, bare MC. No way I have time to keep up with mod versions. ;)

Well, next step is to make a new world. The current one is OLD.

It would have to be! Might be fun in your videos, but I’d be royally pissed off if mobs just knocked down my buildings when I’m safely inside. It would change Minecraft quite a bit.

I’m all for more mob types. But stuff which, unlike creepers, doesn’t need line of sight to break your stuff would be Bad™.

Well, Terraria built on minecraft and added some neat stuff, hopefully minecraft can build off of what Terraria did.

I’d monsters to be able to break in, but to also have possible counters I can build to keep them out. It should still be possible to make a large area completely monster-proof, but it would be cool if it was a more difficult accomplishment.

I dunno. He already said he likes “old school gameplay” and that AI won’t be changed. It’d be a shame to stick to that philosophy. There is nothing interesting between the different monsters.

I mean, yeah in Terraria the monsters come straight at you, but their different movement systems and attacks at least keep it interesting and give reason to build a certain way or to have certain weapons. Minecraft… not really.

Thought you folks in here might be interested in this server I’ve been playing on for awhile.

It’s called Lost Shard and is an interesting server with some cool RPG elements.

There’s a gold based currency, a skill system that can be leveled up, and the ability to own land, among other things. The land ownership bit is great, because plots you own are also “protected”… meaning other players can’t destroy things on your plot.

I won’t go on about all the nifty stuff on it, as it’s recommended that you check out the wiki before playing (since if you try to ask a question in chat, 80% of the time you’ll be told to “read the wiki” anyway).

The server is currently still running 1.5 at the moment, as the server admin is still waiting for the bukkit people to update. He’s usually very good about getting the server up to date in a timely manner though.

Here are the downsides:

  • It has a player cap of 20, and during peak times, you’ll often get a “server is full” message. Right now it’s not been too bad, since a lot of people have updated to 1.6 and can’t connect. But the server owner is currently trying out a new host, and has bumped up the player limit to 30 for the moment… we’ll see if this stays in effect.

  • Global chat on the server can sometimes make you feel like your brain cells are dying. You can disable global chat, but it’s not recommended… since as a PvP server, it’s often helpful to be able to possibly keep an eye on who is actively hunting/killing. Just be aware that the maturity level on the server is a bit hit or miss.

Overall, I really enjoy this server. I like that I can make an enormous, elaborate dwelling, and as long as I secure it properly, no one can get in (except people I want to) and no one can steal my stuff. I typically build my base miles away from the spawn town, so most of the PvPers lose interest in tracking me down.

The current map is relatively new… luciddream (the owner) did a server wipe a few weeks back, and while there’s plenty of new bases already rebuilt, there’s also plenty of wide open space.

If you’re still on 1.5 (or can roll back to it), I highly recommend checking it out… it’s really a lot of fun. Read the wiki and see if it appeals to you. If you can’t roll back to 1.5, just check back in a week or so… I expect the server will be updated to 1.6 by then.

I find the monsters in Minecraft more interesting. Spiders certainly don’t move in the same way zombies do. And defending yourself from creepers is different than skeletons, or spider riding skeletons. In Terraria, a worm and bone serpent do the same thing, it’s just a matter of hitpoints. They don’t have a unique attack that makes them interesting. Even the sound is the same. And I wouldn’t call the ranged magic attacks of shamans and imps in Terraria interesting, more like fucking obnoxious.

Really? They both walk straight at you, granted the spider can move vertically. They also walk at the same speed don’t they?

In Terraria you have flying monsters, monsters that run, that teleport, that jump to move, that split when they die, that shoot spells (ok very annoying), that dive through walls, plants that jump at you like a chomper from mario. Still very basic, with levels of enemies just gaining more damage though. Then you have bosses. I change my weapons up for bosses and worms otherwise I just slice and dice. I do have a large variety of weapons that while I don’t use them I’ve seen others use regularly.

In Minecraft I have the creeper that explodes, the zombie which walks at you, the spider which climbs walls, and the skele which shoots and moves around a bit. They all walk about the same speed with the exception of the spider they all pretty much just go straight at you using the same pathing at the same speed. I’ve played minecraft for probably triple that of Terraria so far but I’ve never seen a skele riding a spider so I can’t comment. I kill all the enemies the same, with a bow - unless I run out of ammo.

So there’s definitely alot more variety, even if you don’t find it more appealing.

Well I was talking about the baddies being interesting. Being paranoid about a creeper sneaking up on you is the kind of thing that Minecraft does. Terraria, while obviously having more enemies, doesn’t have enemies with a lot of character. Different color slimes? Not very interesting.

Hehe, looks cool. It’s funny that they’re using so much stuff from UO, even keeping most of the spells in the same circles. I hope they keep building on those systems, it seems like it has a lot of potential.

Dude… really? Play more Terraria. The game is all about different monsters, it takes a while to level yourself up to seeing the new ones, but there are many different monsters with widely varying difficulty/play styles.

That was a facetious comment. I’ve played about 40 hours of Terraria and have a character with molten armor fighting in the dungeon, so I’ve probably seen every monster by now. Terraria has plenty of monsters, but a Demon Eye does pretty much the same thing an Eater of Souls does. Same with an Angry Bones and a normal Skeleton. I’m not sure I can tell the difference between a Goblin Peon and Thief except that they look slightly different. To be fair Terraria is a game that’s focused on the combat so it needs to fill the screen with enemies and it does a decent job of it with slime types, walking types, burrowing types, flying types and casting types, plus bosses. But it’s not a game where I’m particularly interested in the story behind the Meteor Heads. If you want to argue that Minecraft needs more monsters, sure, but I don’t think Terraria should be the inspiration for them.

Why would you be interested in the story behind skeletons in minecraft? Or zombies? That makes absolutely no sense to me. Minecrafts 1 interesting enemy is the creeper.

I think the enemies in Terarria would be a great inspiration, they just need to be tweaked a bit. We’re not saying we want Minecraft to become terraria in that we get swamped like in it, but come on - a giant worm would be an awesome enemy.

I was thinking of the Pigmen and Ghasts when I mentioned story. And I didn’t intend that to be a quantitative measure, I’m just saying I find that interesting while the creatures like Meteor Heads are not as interesting to me. Minecraft also has an interesting few neutral mobs that can become hostile, one tamable. The creatures can also interact between themselves. Minecraft has a shallow bit of an ecology while in Terraria everything either wants to kill you or sell you something. For instance how would you want to see a worm implemented in Minecraft? If it just randomly appeared and “flew” through the ground at you, I would find that damned annoying.

To add more Terraria-like creature AI to Minecraft would require Minecraft adding a couple of weapons aside from a diamond sword and a puny bow.

Terraria creature AI? Lets see, all creatures know where you are 100% of the time and do their best to navigate to you 100% of the time until they get to you and keep attacking you relentlessly.

I do not think much of the Terraria AI, not that the Minecraft AI is much better, at least the critters have an aggro range and you do not have every spawned creature in the world doing their best to make a bee-line to you.

Yeah…I really hate the Fire Imps in the Hell level :(
