I’m right there with you on that one. Minecraft != Terraria 3D, and thank goodness for that.

Which doesn’t mean I don’t agree that there is a lot more that can be done with Minecraft and with the variety of gameplay on offer in it (as well as with the mystery upcoming adventure mode). But keep (most of) your Terraria out of my Minecraft!

Spotted on Facebook: Minecraft is coming to Xbox 360. Notch’s Twitter post:

It makes sense. While Minecraft is still selling, he should be looking at expanding his market. Of course, XBLA has much different rules on the types of updates he’s hoping to get.

I’m wondering how he’ll compete in marketing against FortressCraft. People are going to see the much higher resolution graphics on FCraft and the nice water with its shader effects and perhaps choose it over Minecraft.

FortressCraft art is horrible. The author don’t have any sense or taste. It have enormous particle puffs for effects on 512x512 resolution. Effects for the sake of effects … that get in the way. Is for shows, but not to play.

I don’t know if most people will see it that way, but the beaty of minecraft comes from recreating nature in a abstract sense (is not on the screen, but on the plat beyond it). So is more on the mapgen and lighting engine than in the textures.

Yeah, even in minecraft high resolution textures look bad, especially the animals and mobs. Its the uncanny valley effect, detailed textures don’t fit in a world of blocks.

FortressCraft will do all right though. Shiny sells well on consoles.

[rage] I hope this doesn’t mean more delays in getting minecraft finished. More time for Notch to break interesting features, is bad.[/rage]

Timelapse build - City of Arches
I personally don’t have an architect’s eye and struggle to visualize building ideas, instead bashing blocks with trial and error, so this kind of thing really amazes me. The others in the series are worth watching too.

Damn. I cannot explain why exactly, but that is one of the most relaxing videos I’ve ever seen.

That was impressive. I can’t imagine planning that out let alone executing that plan. Whenever I make something big in minecraft I just start off with a rough idea and start building it. To plan a city like that would take some actual planning with graph paper or something.

wow, that’s awesome. No way I would have the patience for that.

I’d totally buy it again for PS3, but I’m sure that would be more effort than the xbox360 version for them.

I see stuff like that and can’t help but think how cool it would be to see that populated with NPCs or even have city builder gameplay built up around it. Like as you build, you attract NPCs looks for shelter from the monsters in the world and as you assign them buildings and level them up in various tasks you attract more and unlock new things for them to do.

Or even set up a portal storyline, where the last world the resources were used up, and as you settle the new Minecraft world and pacify it, you attract new NPCs with new skill sets and/or train and assign them to duties to attract more people.

Or do both! Dwarf Fortress seems a bit like that, but I’m thinking more Dwarf Fortress lite… without mircromanaging everything. It’d be more like the build orders in an RTS or Civ game than Sims like behavior modeling + obsessive world modeling.

After playing MILLÉNAIRE, I was thinking the same thing, except a settlers type game. I don’t thinks it’s possible though until minecraft is finished.

We are working on Minecraft Beta 1.7, which I’m referring to as the “adventure update”. We’re keeping the details secret so people can get surprises. The idea with this update is to flesh out the game a bit, making it reward exploration and combat more. Assuming we like them in play testing, pistons are coming in 1.7.

  • We’re starting the modding support on a small scale with 1.7. We’ll be giving the source code out to a very VERY small group of people before the release of 1.7. We’ll use those experiences to work out the final details, then we’ll get the modding api out as soon as possible after 1.7 has been released.

  • Again, if you weren’t ware, the “modding api” is the entire source code for Minecraft, uncensored and unobfuscated. You need to agree to certain terms to get access, though, but anyone can apply.

1.7 pistons in action

Sticky piston! Brilliant!

Love it, but I have to wonder how to make it useful if there’s no “key” that you could carry around that will let only you (i.e. a player) open and reveal things. Will monsters be able to open doors but not pull levers? :)

Well, you can use one of the trigger pads that monsters and items can activate.

If you want to hide your secret wall, then cover your switch with some other block.

It seems of limited use. Now if you could make a long piston to make elevators, that would be cool. He might allow them to be opened like a chest and you can put sticks inside. The number of sticks could determine the height of the piston.

A previous piston video showed a player sort of springing himself up quite a bit by standing on a piston. Not sure if that’s still possible or not.
