Indeed. Almost too much? I wonder if they will use exactly what you have said, a “hardcore” mode with this system, separated of the normal mode.

Notch seems to be taking the game in a direction I am not interested in. I just want to explore and build. Now if it turns into Minecraft RPG combat simulator, I may be done with this game. Of course there are always mods to “fix” things. I could see one of the first mods will be the “No perma-death” mod.

Unless I’m playing to build something in particular, I do a self imposed permadeath as it is. See how far I can get until I die, then delete the world and start a new one. For me, the getting up and running is usually the best part.

1.8 will separate the game in Creative and Survival modes, if you want explore and build, you can do it in Creative. Survival is the “combat” and “survival” (sic) mode.

I think it depends on what the levels wind up being used for, which it sounds like they haven’t worked out yet. If levels just act like a kind of ‘buff’ to your stats, then it’s not really a big deal. But if you have to gain levels to unlock specific abilities, that could be a problem. Nobody wants to die while mining and then have to go level up a bit just to reunlock the ability to mine a certain ore again.

Of course, this is all wild speculation. First we have to know what’s the point of leveling up, then we can begin to worry about losing the levels XD.

Indeed; I’m at a loss here 'cause talking about being a fan of a roguelike and levels is all fine and dandy but Minecraft, as it is, has nothing to do with roguelikes; you have no skills, no unique traits (race, etc) no traps, no dungeons, no multiple enemy mobs, etc. I’m not saying this because I don’t want it to be more roguelike, I’m saying this because levels have absolutely nothing to do with the minecraft experience, at least so far.

There’s so much stuff Notch could add that would enrich Minecraft so much that I honestly just stopped playing and will wait until the official “release” to see what they added or not; I still think that Notch could learn a bit from Dwarf Fortress, at least in terms of variety, while maintaining it’s simple yet deep interface and player connection to the world.

I don’t think Notch had a concrete idea about what was supposed be Minecraft, in the final version. The sudden success that took him (and the world) by surprise only made things worse, as for months he was occupied not with the design of the game but a more robust delivery system, the problems with Paypal, server issues, opening his own studio, hiring people, future versions in console and mobiles, etc.

Sooo…anyone have some tips for building in the Nether? Every time I venture out to work some more on my fortress in the depths of its hellish landscape, I’m constantly dodging (*&!!@! ghast fireballs (and building with glass or anything fragile becomes a serious issue. I actually think the ghasts are worse than creepers – creepers are easier to kill and they aren’t the ever-present force of extreme annoyance that ghasts are.

Also, accidentally hitting a pigman who walks in front of you while you’re trying to clear some netherrack? Paaaaaaaaaaaainful.

Good grief you’re quick to express your desire to stop playing any given game.

If they can’t see you, they won’t shoot at you. I just carry several stacks of material and build a hallway as I move if there are a bunch of ghasts around. They also can’t see through glass, so you can make windows and still be safe.

Don’t do what I did and not take flint and steel with you. A ghast will blow out your portal and you’ll be stuck.

Yeah, I already had a ghast knock out my portal once (but I came prepared). Now it’s in a cobblestone shelter, but I want to build that shelter out with some walls and other buildings. Unfortunately, going outside exposes me to the one or two ghasts that are ALWAYS loitering around. I don’t have any time to sit there and figure out where and how I want to build out because I feel like I can’t stand there and look around. It’s a little frustrating. And evidently I am really bad at shooting the ghasts because I think I shot through a whole stack of arrows and hit maybe once.

Do we have a QT3 server to play on as a group?

Chequers had one but he shut it down for now. I have my own multiplayer server for me and a few friends at the moment, which runs off my linux desktop (and is, as a result, a little wonky). Thinking about getting some real hosting for it though before I move to CA in two weeks.

Best is to build a cobblestone waystation around your primary nether portal. Throw in a supply chest and a bed… voila!

A bed in the nether is…a silly idea. :)

Actually, I haven’t messed with the nether since beds were added. I take it they don’t work?

Oh well, they’re still good for jumping on.

They…explode. :)
